I think platforms is important, I'm not sure I'd use it to search but others might, I do though think it's useful info. I think 'retail' is a bit redundant, and while I see your point about downloads we could do with that to separate for the consoles, although again it is kind of implied with indies.

I'd like people to use them but from experience of having to fill in loads of tags (for SEO stuff) it's a bit tedious when you have to do loads

I personally don't think that retail or download is something that will be relevant as we go on. And is certainly less so if you only do PC gaming and use Steam.

True enough. Same could be said for Tablet/Phone too.

I have no idea then. I've thrown some ideas out. Maybe you guys should do the same. Or maybe just fuck the idea off completely, because there's always going to be at least one of us that says "no".

Having a retro tag is a stupid idea. The remakes that we're getting can hardly be marked as retro even though they are the same game. Plus you have the age old argument of what retro actually is.

I'm currently reading the rllmuk discussion thread about it to see if there's any good ideas or solutions in there.

One I did think of myself was limiting it down to manufacture - Xbox and 360 are just XBOX (or Microsoft), Nintendo, Sega, Sony, etc.

Throwing this out there as a full-ish list before I go to bed. Discuss and all that:

Action, Adventure, Fighter, Platformer, Puzzle, RPG, Shooter, Strategy

Handheld, Indie, Microsoft, Mobile, Nintendo, PC, Sega, Sony

Advance Wars would be Handheld, Nintendo, Strategy

Streets of Rage 2 - Fighter, Sega

Skyrim - Microsoft, PC, RPG, Sony

If it was entirely down to me I would lose all the genres and just have systems (and Indie, because I'm stubborn, naturally).

I think the idea with tagging is that on a certain thread it would throw up games similarly tagged, so in the Advance Wars one the ones at the top of the list would be other games tagged with the same ones so you could find similar games. Though I think that's how it's meant to work, anyway.

I agree, just the platforms and the Indie tag is fine. No need to over-complicate things. No reason we can't see how it goes for now and look at it again in the future.

It seems like the sort of thing that we would use for a bit and then just drop after a while, just knowing what we are normally like.

Its definitely a good idea, but unless we came up with a strict list and all agreed generally what to tag stuff with then it loses a lot of its efficiency. Weve basically created the grouping ourselves with where we put certain topics anyway, the main way I can see it being useful is for stuff like mobile gaming, which is just a thread that floats around, and random news, which we already have pinned.
