I'm such a noob at times.

I've never played more than a few minutes of Doom 3 before as it just past me by. No idea why I never got it at the time: I had an Xbox, I was quite into shooters at the time and I like monsters. Can't really figure out why I wasn't there. Maybe it was because it had some negative reception, I dunno.

Anyway, I'm playing it now and I'm quite surprised how much I'm enjoying it. All it is is a ghost train with monsters you shoot at and it overuses the 'spawn enemies behind you' trick a bit to often as I've learned to pretty much always check my 6 (maybe that's the point?) but I've3 been yelping and laughing my way through, always being slightly lost, so it's not like it isn't fun. Though I do wish the weapons had more kick to them, like I just wish it felt a bit better killing things.

On this collection Doom and Doom 2 are also there, and I've also never played Doom... I got Doom 2 on sale on XBLA and played it a bit. I actually really enjoyed my brief time with it and I'm liking Doom even more. That's a game that's still fun to play. The movement feels like you're coasting and sometimes there are loads of enemies and weaving about while shooting that hellishly satisfying shotgun is some top gaming. I think that's what annoys about Doom 3 a little; I wish the shooting felt as good as that.

So yeah, it's 2013 and I think I may have just properly discovered Doom. Dunno if you've heard but it's good.

I played this last on the old XBox brick, in the dark with headphones on, just to add to the experience. I really enjoyed it, although I found the last level to be a bit boring. I think they've changed this version a bit, because you could only have gun or torch out, but I know some PC mods strapped the torch to the gun....

Havn't played Doom 1 + 2 for years. Had a great time LANing it on PC. Also had a great mod which changed all the sounds to soundbites from Aliens....

I played doom right at the beginning in its shareware days just got the first episode for free, we hacked the college network so we could muli play, we designed out own levels actually have mine on a 3.5" disc somewhere, now thats a relic, i loved doom back in the 90's such an awesome game and opened up so many opportunities, time gone by. Bit like baywatch....

I just remember watching some of the nerds playing Doom on the school network. I'll never forget their geeky, snorting glee while playing.

Of forgot to mention, are you meant to die at the end of the first chapter? I went through a portal and loads of enemies were there and I died instantly but then the credits rolled and I got a trophy saying I beat chapter 1... I was like

Is it because now the rest of the game takes place in hell and that was me dying?

And I'm also now kinda lost in Doom 3. There are some really bad puzzle-y parts that fuck with the flow of the game. I was in a constant bad mood when I had to operate a crane and dispose of toxic materials because that's what's entertaining isn't it? operating cranes.

Yep if i remember rightly you didn't live at the end, and i guess i was one of them nerds........

Funny how things turn out, back then i was a computer wizz, im behind in the times.

I'm making a bit more progress on Doom 3. I had to consult a YouTube walkthrough to get past the bit I was on and I'm glad I did as I never would have figured it out. It's the bit where you move about on that platform and it turns out it can move up and down as well as move around on the tracks, and no real clue was given that you could do that.

As good as I think the game is, and I do think it's good, you can tell this comes from a time when people expected longer games as it is dragging and getting a bit repetitive... I fell like I'm killing those fire throwing guys a lot.

As for the original Doom, I think I've hit a wall. I'm on the second level of chapter 3 so I've lost all my weapons again, but not the enemies early on are quite difficult. I only have a pistol and a shotty and there are those big fireball spitting meat-heads everywhere. I have found a chaingun and if I could get it I think I could manage but I can't figure out how to get it.

I played through DOOM 1 a couple of years ago and was quite surprised at how hard it was. Still such a fantastic game though, I think I have played it on just about every console it was released on and only really gave it a proper go when it was released on XBLA. The start of each chapter is usually the hardest but it is well worth butting your head against a wall until you figure a way to get through it since it is still one of the more satisfying games around when you overcome the seemingly impossible challenge of getting through 50 goons with nothing but ten bullets in your pistol and shifty looking eyes.

I can see it being a satisfying challenge, but it's just before when it got pretty hard I always felt like I had the tools to deal with the situation. It's just I've been ill lately and I've been coming to Doom for a fun distraction, and an actual challenge isn't something I'm striving for.

Maybe when I get my shit together I'll take everything on with nothing but my fists.

I finished the core Doom 3 today and now I have started the additional content. I almost didn't want to as I think the game is too long for the ideas it has, but from what I can tell they have added a slow down time ability and a thing that is essentially Gordon Freeman's Gravity Gun, so that may mix things up a bit more then the core game did.

The bit in Hell was cool, but far too brief. The pacing is a bit messed up overall. They should have chopped about four hours of space station stuff then added two hours of Hell.

And as for Doom, well I did the third chapter, so that is kinda the end, but it looks like chapter four was added as an extra for those that are awesome at it. I'm not awesome at it so I can't do chapter four for shit. So I just thought fuck it and started Doom 2.
