Audio Editing Sotware

I've got a bit of a problem that I don't know how to solve.

I'm filming using a vlog style camera. When I put the video into Sony Vegas it automatically separates the video and audio. I can mess about with the video all I want, but if I want to dip the sound or shut out intrusions into the audio then I have to use the in built software of Vegas that opens my audio software. This happens to be Audacity. Now the problem is I can't edit anything in Audacity because it won't accept the audio file type the camera records in, but I cannot seem to get the audio file extracted from the video file, I'm not sure what to do.

Are there any free audio editing programs that I can plug into Vegas that will support all file formats so I can get around this? I'm thinking ACID but I'm thinking that is WAV and AIFF only too. The video file type is MPEG 4, so fuck knows what the actual audio is recorded in.

surely there's a plug in for audacity that will accept the audio input file?

audacity is pretty great, but my god, it's a fiddly bit of software.

I think that's plug in you're talking about is for exporting as MP3's?

What file format is the video being saved as?

MPEG-4. I think what I am going to have to do it get a MPEG-4 to WAV program, and then double up on sound channels, but mute the one that is native to the video while editing the one ripped. More fucking work.
