HandsomeDead
It has been a bit of a breakout hit lately on the PC, or it has seemed like that to me. Games like this are sometimes teased for years but this one just turned up and is getting a lot of attention. This can go in the PC thread but I felt it deserved its own. It's deserved as it's a great return to the classic survival horror of old, mostly inspired by Silent Hill. Actually, it's better at being Silent Hill the recent Silent Hill games. Of course the game is in 2D and uses a very chunky pixel art style. Personally, I don't think it works that well. It's still atmospheric as it still uses quite an advanced lighting technique and the sound is top notch (in fact, the sound is amazing) but I think the chunky pixels do make everything look weirdly cute. But like I said before, the sound, lighting and subject matter does give a constant sense of uneasy-ness; it's just different art style would have added more, I think. I don't want to go into the the story and stuff because it's the mystery of it that is what's great. Apparently, Jasper Byrne, who made it, really went to town in researching mental illnesses and it's through trying to piece together why the game's nameless protagonist experiences these things. Is what's happening actually happening? if not, what's driving these apparitions? Or is it both? It's really rich in weirdness so it could go either or all ways. And it's definitely a survival horror, with emphasis on survival. Ammo for your handgun is rare, batteries need to be stocked up for your torch and you need to keep yourself nourished with food and sleep. I've only failed in keeping on top of a few of these things and it ends up with your man having a breakdown so keep things topped up. I'll give one bit of advice: for ammo, take a blue pill before you sleep. It's been pretty hard, too. You really don't have enough ammo to kill all the enemies so choose wisely if you are going to put one out of its misery. With it being in 2D it's also reminded me how much in common the classic survival horror has with adventure games. If it wasn't for all the scary stuff that's what it would be. Anyway, Lone Survivor is very good and you all should get it; it runs on anything. Go!
radiofloyd
I definitely plan to play it, looks great. Legend of Grimrock is taking up all of my time at the moment...
Hendo
In theory I should be all over it, but I watched the Giant Bomb video on it, and something about it rubbed me up the wrong way. It might have been that it was too dark a lot of the time, I think that put me off Condemned as well.
HandsomeDead
Really!? I played the first Condemned, and it was great, like really good. I'm finding I'm having to relearn how to play these games again. All the early Resident Evil games I got pretty good at and after some plays I could go through them with minimum of fuss. I think I may have to start again with this as I may have used up ammo needlessly on some monsters. I'm struggling now. If anyone gets it, seriously, really consider running if you can. radiofloyd
Made some good progress on this today. I spoke to the girl and picked up the business card for the first radio frequency. I'm probably pretty close to being finished with the apartment area. All very interesting so far. .
radiofloyd
Slowly but surely, I'm on Day 14 of my playthrough now. Story-wise i'm in down in the basement/third map area. I picked up a large fuse and my next goal is to restart the elevator to trap the large monster. As for the survival stuff, well i've gotten flares and a kettle off the director so far. My mad Broken Sword skills told me to put the bucket under the leak in my apartment which allowed me to collect water. I than used my Zelda knowledge to drink the milk in my milk bottle which gave me an empty bottle to hold the water. Now i can make coffee... Its an interesting and enjoyable game but it's not scary at all, if that was putting you off.
radiofloyd
Finished Lone Survivor, took me just under 4 hours. I got the blue ending. I would say it's about equal to To the Moon, a pretty wonky game wrapped up in a (mildly) interesting concept. 7/
retroed
This is coming to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.
HandsomeDead
Details! http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-03-13-lone-survivors-ps3-and-vita-port-due-this-summer Update: The Lone Survivor PS3 and Vita port's release date has been narrowed down to July, according to a post on the EU PlayStation Blog. Creator Jasper Byrne also details the new content further on his Superflat Games blog. It will contain "more than twenty new items, new dialogue with all NPC's, two extensive new side quests, two new locations, and a brand new 'Yellow' ending, featuring a new piece of music." He further noted that most of the new content would only be available in the brand new New Game+ mode. "This version really will be enhanced in every way, smoother, nicer to control, with a lot of little extras that don't change the game itself, just add to it," Byrne explained. Original story: Last year Lone Survivor creator Jasper Byrne announced that his cult classic 2D survival horror game was being ported to PS3 and Vita and now we have a rough launch window of summer, developer/publisher Curve has announced. Previously only available on PC, Mac and Linux, this console port of Lone Survivor will add new locations, sidequests, items and an additional ending. It will also support Cross Save functionality meaning players can toggle their save data between both Sony platforms. "Lone Survivor's release on PlayStation consoles is a dream come true for me," said Byrne. "I've been a big fan of Sony's hardware all my life. I really hope PS3 and Vita owners enjoy the game and its new content." EG contributor Lewis Denby called Lone Survivor an "intricate and unique game that takes the best of old-style survival horror and warps it into something all of its own" in his 8/10 review. Lone Survivor is another in a long line of indie games flocking to Sony platforms. Previously we saw Retro City Rampage sell like gangbusters on the Vita, while Ed McMillen's The Binding of Isaac demake and abstract, narrative-heavy platformer Thomas Was Alone are also making the leap to Vita and PS3. I'm probably gonna be double dipping with this.
HandsomeDead
Lone Survivor: The Director's Cut now available on PS3 and Vita. It looks like playing the game will be similar to the PC version going by his blog post but there is a lot more content in the new New Game+ mode that has been added that delves deeper into it. Sounds good to me. I'll get it when I can. And there is a Steam version of The Director's Cut in the works.

HandsomeDead
The Directer's Cut is now available on Steam - http://store.steampowered.com/app/209830/ It's a free update if you've already bought the original. Nice.
Bob
I bought this on Vita today. So far ( day 5 or 6) it seems like a lot of fun. I really like the pixel art style, I think it is a great contrast the horrific violence and stuff. The music is incredibly creepy through headphones as well. Like someone is rubbing iron together while whispering something creepy in your ear.
Uncle Dokuro
I picked up Lone Survivor: Directors Cut free on the PlayStation Vita via the Instant Games Collection. I only played a few minutes of it, but hopefully I can dig deeper into it when I find my headphones. My only neg is the text is a bit hard to read on the Vita's small screen.
