What will be really interesting to see is what will be the first game to 'break' the 60fps promise being made here

They didn't talk much about its CPU I think, and games being CPU bound isn't a problem which will be fixed by Pisser technology. This will be the best platform to play GTAVI on so I wonder if it'll handle it at that

Wasn't really paying attention last night and only later realised it was 700GBP, meaning it's 800€ over here (without a disc drive or a stand).

I can't really put myself into the mindset of someone who would buy a console like this. It's not even the price per se, it's just the idea of what else you could do with that amount of money, even limited to purchases in this very medium. That's like a year's worth of games. Or, presumably, a Switch 2 and the entirety of its launch lineup. I'm aware I'm rather low-tech, but this entire thing just seems nonsensical, even more so than I thought pre-announcement (where I was expecting 700€ at most with a disc drive).

GTA VI? I don’t see that hitting 60fps on Pro.

Of course inflation doesn't mean current buying power.

Thank you! I fucking hate these adjust for inflation things that always pop up when discussing the price of stuff. Wages haven’t climbed at the same rate so £600 now feels just as expensive as it did 15 years ago. Billionaires and record breaking profits have made inflation go up not our wages.

Wonder what their production & stock levels are going to be - in terms of they almost want to keep the price high and stock low to keep that element of sustained desire for a niche, esteemed, desirable product - rather than be seen to have a bunch of them stagnating on the shelves that won't shift until there's a significant price drop.

So weirdly it's likely to be the want to own, rather than the added functionality itself, that'll shift many of these units.

The price is disappointing because the Pro seems to fix the problems I have with a lot of games - image quality + FPS and get rid of FSR. If it has faster RT on top then great, although I’m less moved by RT, really

But then it’s only certain games that need “fixing”, not all of them. And £800 (including disc drive) to fix these problems is just too much

I think the PS5 and all consoles are definitely behind. Frame reconstruction is a major part of current gaming on PC, I can’t think of a modern game I play without it, so the fact they’re trying to get in PS5 now makes sense and is good, but they might just be rushing it. Xbox was looking at this feature for 2028. Makes me think part of why they were looking at it further down the line was cost. Where as Sony are trying to rush it now

There arent enough first party exclusives these days to say im sticking with it.

Sony are getting closer and closer to parity with PS5/PC releases, too. So it becomes even more of an 'I can get this PS5 game on a PC from CD keys for £30 cheaper than console - why am I wasting my time with £70 releases again?"

I don’t remember the last time a gaming product has been ripped to shreds so bad purely on price. I don’t think they’ll adjust it, at least not right away. But damn. No one even cares what it does. Just it’s £700 and can’t use discs is the whole conversation

On the framerate stuff

https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/16/24131799/sony-ps5-pro-enhanced-requirements-ultra-boost-mode

Also I saw it mentioned somewhere that the Hogwarts game was running at 30 on the stream so I guess it's already the case that we have CPU bound games being held back by the Pro, presuming it's reflective of real PS5P performance

---

(Also given that this has no disc drive it means that mega64 are definitely going to make a video about buying and destroying one of these as they try to squeeze a disc in it with mayonnaise, like their ps5 and vita videos)

One thing I’ve seen a lot of people talk about today and read an article on Eurogamer is - why do you need a Pro console, graphics power has had diminishing returns for years

There are 2 things for me. Firstly I think the jump in graphics from a PS4 to a PS5 has been outstanding. Playing Demon’s Souls on PS5 was like whoa. I’m really surprised people think this gen of consoles haven’t had impressive graphics. I can’t argue with opinion, but it’s certainly not mine.

The second thing is I really don’t think the Pro exists to set a new standard. It’s trying to keep up with the current one. Their big point at the beginning of the presentation was talking about graphics modes, and how the Pro is to let the user have both. It’s because that divide between FPS and Resolution is getting greater and greater on PS5 because the games march on but the console is 4 years old.

This attitude to me almost comes off as a bitterness because of the price.

The price is outrageous but the amount of undermining and underselling out of disappointment/spite comes off as big denial to me

I said yesterday there’s 2 realities here. There’s a reality of the cost of the tech and the reality of the cost to the consumer. And those things are out of whack. Yes, the price is mad for a video game console and I can’t imagine who will buy one

But let’s also not pretend the PS5 isn’t slipping and what the Pro is supposed to offer wouldn’t be really great to have

Funnily enough the game that’s impressed me most with using the Ps5 power recently is Astro Bot. & Pro would do fuck all to improve it as it’s already rock solid.

There’s so many particles and physics shit happening sometimes it just looks amazing. Some areas just chuck loads of tiny items all over for you to send flying. One in particular fills the room with coloured gems. If you do the spin attack in there it just looks unreal. The scale of some of the set pieces are pretty damn impressive too.

Still, would like something that doesn’t make FF Rebirth and XVI look like shit though in the future.

RT really put this gen through the wringer for performance->cosy ratio

At the same time I just think RT global illumination is what makes a lot of games look current gen now. I remember playing TLOU2 after Control the year it came out and it already looked dated to me outside of cutscenes. This is my perspective being skewed by PC but it's sort of thr thing games are reaching for now if they aren't highly stylised like Astro, these very grounded looking worlds where stuff doesn't stick out unrealistically

It means tho that when it comes to consoles, I much prefer how Tears of the Kingdom looks compared to games like FFXVI where it's clearly struggling. But Tears is smartly and artistically designed for its hardware

Edit cosy is an obvious typo but I refuse to fix it 😽

Just finished watching the DF reaction video. It’s long, but I’d fully recommend watching this from beginning to end. Open minded and positive about the product, negative and skeptical about the price. Talk about its place in the market, what it means for console pricing, how poor the pitch video was and how big PSSR could be. Very interesting, level headed and thorough (without a hands on)

This is why DF is so good. There’s little performance here. Just very knowledgeable video game fans talking genuinely.
