Didn't only the original PS3s have BC but later models didn't ? Think it was something to do with the laser they used for the dvd/blu ray drive ?
OCH
Yeah, that sounds about right. I was still at Woolworths at the time. A lot of people complained about that (and the launch price).
shinymcshine
Actually seems like it was due to different chipsets used in different models: https://www.lifewire.com/can-your-ps3-play-ps2-games-2717135
OCH
Quote If it's a PS3 Slim, then it isn't PS2 backward compatible, though you can still enjoy PS3 and PSone games on it. ?
OCH
Sony really botched the PS3 launch. I don't think they could have made it any worse.

DANGERMAN
I don't imagine anyone is going to miss the games that won't work on PS5 too much, but it is an odd list. Like, Shadow Complex, unless that's running an emulator of the 360 version (was there a PS3 version) or something, why wouldn't that work? Some of the other games I wouldn't be surprised if it was that they were clumsily made and so just break on PS5 (meaning no offence to the developers, I suspect budget would be the killer here), I wouldn't even be surprised if they boot but are just unplayable in some way edit: just watched some footage of Shadwen, the pc version, actually looks pretty good
DANGERMAN
I watched the Digital Foundry video about the external harddrive solutions for the Xbox and it got me thinking about the PS5. I can't remember if there's space for an internal SSD or not, but if not it's going to allow for USB external SSD the same as the Xbox. Not an ideal solution but as a way to store PS4 games and retire the PS4 itself, not the worst solution. I think I've got a 1tb in a drawer somewhere too

spatular
yeah there's space for an internal m2 nvme drive in the ps5. they showed it in the teardown video.
DANGERMAN
ah, so any normal SSD would have to be external?
spatular
Yeah that’s right, no space for a 2.5” drive internally. edit - I wonder if you could use a slower m2 ssd internally just for PS4 games, not sure if they’ve already answered that. mmmark
That’s often happened at console releases.
mmmark
PS5 camera isn’t compatible with PSVR so don’t be throwing the old cam away, but then you’ll also need an adapter to connect it to the ps5.
