Rumour: Sony planning backward compatibility for PS5

Quote

Sony has registered a new patent that seems to be suggesting support of backward compatibility for the PS5. Read on see why the patent could suggest we could be getting the ability to play our PS4, PS3, PS2 and PS1 games on the Playstation 5.

The patent was filed privately before, probably as a placeholder, but updated on October 2nd, 2018.

The patent titled “Remastering by emulation” is registered to Sony Interactive Entertainment America LLC, the parent company of the Playstation brand.

As summary of the patent is as follows:

Each asset such as a texture called for by legacy software such as a legacy computer game software has a unique identifier associated with it. The unique identifier can be rendered by imposing a hash on the asset, and then the asset stored with its identifier in a data structure. An artist remasters the textures for presentation on a higher resolution display than envisioned in the original software, and stores them back in the data structure with their identifiers. The original software is then played on the higher resolution display, with asset (such as texture) calls being intercepted, identified, and the data structure entered to retrieve the remastered asset having a matching identifier. The remastered asset is then inserted on the fly into the game presentation.

Sounds awfully like Backward Compatibility doesn’t it? It also seems to suggest that Sony will be foregoing the “Remaster” route that they went will the PS5. The Xbox One is held in high regard due to its massive support of Xbox and Xbox 360 games, with Sony going the same route with the PS5, it’ll only be beneficial for us gamers.

Sony commits to PS4 successor

Quote

At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware,” said Kenichiro Yoshida, in an interview with the Financial Times. He declined to formally name Sony’s future console the “PlayStation 5”.

There have been industry rumours that Sony might be planning a tablet that would connect to multiple devices as online streaming of games becomes more widespread and the company seeks to derive ever greater synergies between its games and movie divisions.

Sony has also been slow to embrace the surging potential for esports, a market based around a global audience estimated at 167m that watch online streams of professionals playing games at the highest level.

Industry analysts believe that Sony will be keen to rectify that through its next console, by ensuring that its machines are deemed powerful enough to host top level esport events.

Sony Interactive Entertainment, the division responsible for PlayStation, said it was considering various options to strengthen its position in esports, which it sees as an effective way to encourage users to play a game for a longer period of time and to enhance the social role of games.

People in the games publishing industry with knowledge of Sony’s plans for a future console said that early indications were that it might not represent a major departure from the PS4, and that the fundamental architecture would be similar.

Agreed. I saw a headline on twitter saying 'Sony finally confirms PS4 successor' but they did that at e3. This is "could be a streaming tablet?" it isn't, "could make the most of esports", but not even any attempt at walking down how they'd do that

This message bricking thing is a bit shit.

I got a friend request last night, I was at the PC so looked at it there and thought "Man, this is weird, I don't know this person and their message is weird" so just deleted it I unknowingly saved myself there because it can brick the console through the message that is attached through a friend request apparently.

Sony not attending E3 2019

Quote

The history of the Electronic Entertainment Expo is as long as it is circuitous. The annual event has traditionally brought the entire gaming industry together as developers and publishers fight for attention both on and off the show floor through announcements, trailers, and pomp and circumstance. The displays of grandeur have ebbed and flowed over the course of E3's soon-to-be 25-year history, with different companies occasionally reconsidering the extent of their involvement in the show. Now one of its biggest players, Sony, has decided that PlayStation will not be attending E3 in 2019.

“As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community," the company told Game Informer in a statement. "PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you.”

When asked if Sony would push its event off-site, similar to how Electronic Arts provides a show adjacent to E3, PlayStation senior vice president of communications Jennifer Clark elaborated further saying, "We will not activate or hold a press conference around E3."

Sony's withdrawal from E3 likely comes as a disappointment to fans that look forward to the company's stage show as a centerpiece for the expo as a whole. From huge announcements like Spider-Man and Horizon: Zero Dawn to tense, on-stage demos like The Last of Us, Sony has always brought a certain flair to the show. The press conference battle between Microsoft and Sony, especially once Nintendo changed to a video format, is often the talk of E3.

The announcement comes after Sony declined to hold their annual fan event called PlayStation Experience, or PSX, this year, which usually takes place in the first two weeks of December. Sony Interactive Entertainment chairman Shawn Layden said at the time that there simply was not enough to show this year, a problem that fans also pointed out during the previous year's more low-key event.

The official statement suggests that Sony plans to engage the community in other events. Does this mean Sony will be reviving the currently shuttered PlayStation Experience? "We are looking at events as a whole and how we can speak more to our fans and continue to wow them. The timing of PSX and E3 didn't allow for that," Clark replied. "But lots of exciting things to come, and we hope to share shortly. Some of our biggest games will have key milestones next year so we will work hard to blow those up."

The Entertainment Software Association, or ESA, has hosted E3 since its inception in 1995. The trade association is made up of the video game industry's largest and most notable publishers, including Sony Interactive Entertainment, and has recently made moves to transition E3 from less of an industry event to a fan-inclusive one. We reached out to the ESA about Sony's announcement, and were informed they plan to release a statement later today.

What do you think about Sony pulling away from E3 in 2019? Does it change your view of the show? Let us know below in the comments.

Yeah it’s a huge shame for me too, I will always remember their conferences 2013-2016.

The Shenmue 3, Last Guardian and FFVIIIR triple heading will go down in gaming history.

But if they’ve only got Dreams and Days Gone for 2019 then it might be for the best if they skip it. I’m imagining all the 3rd parties will go to Xbox again to show off trailers.

It does now seem incredibly likely that Death Stranding and TLOUP2 are PS5 launch titles.
