1. I see that enemies respawn - is it worth grinding for souls to level up?

Not particularly in the areas you are in. When you get to the first blacksmith (you can't miss him) he will sell you a crest that unlocks the door to an excellent grinding spot (again you cant really miss it). There's a trick to farming souls in this area, i'm not sure if you would figure it out without reading about it on the internet first, but people do leave messages on the ground to give you an idea. It gives you about 7000 souls/2 minutes. So you can basically level to whatever target you set yourself.

Word to the wise: Be careful not to attack npcs (i.e. if you need to fiddle with your inventory don't do it standing directly in front of a merchant) - they will turn hostile and attack you. You can reverse this but it costs a lot of souls.

2. Have I made the wrong class? I love the axe I started with, like the fireball too but it's limited in number (only 8 throws at the moment) so I've gone back to the axe. Is this a waste of the pyro class? Have I missed something vitally important? With the fireball my soft attack throws a fireball but the heavy attack only throws a punch.

It's not like you can pause the game while you change weapons (I think it carries on regardless?) so I'm just sticking with one or the other, so the axe is winning right now.

Yeah the game never pauses. I don't know about pyro because i played completely melee - but it is a very popular option and you can strengthen it a lot. It does become extremely powerful in the game. People use it a lot in pvp too. But don't worry, starting class means very little in this game. The stat difference between what you started with and what a warrior or knight would start with is pretty slim. So no need to restart. Just concentrate on putting points into however you want to build your character.

3. I'm getting attacked from afar and one of the messages suggests to use long range attacks but the fireball doesn't go very far, am I screwed?

Nah, probably just archers. Keep an eye out for them, keep your shield up etc. Usually it's best to just run past their line of fire. You'll reach them eventually. When people say use long range attack i'm pretty sure they mean bows. It's definitely handy to have a bow and some arrows on hand (but i wouldn't waste points on dexterity).

4. I have to reverse hollow myself but it says I have no humanity even though I'm sure I'm picking up humanity quite a lot. Is this something that should come later?

In the top left of your screen there should be a circle with a number in it. If it says 0, then you have no humanity. To reverse hollow you have to be at a bonfire. Being human can be more trouble than it's worth. The main thing is you can be invaded. But it does allow you to summon other players to help you (including certain NPCs).

5. Should I just put this down to experience and start again with another class?

No need. If you find yourself playing as a melee type just put all your points into vitality, endurance and strength and forget the rest.

Bit stuck now - I know I have to get to the dragon but I'm not sure how. I think the only option I have is to drop back down to the bonfire by the snipers. I've been going round and round this section now for hours, just grinding and levelling up.

Just run at him, keep your shield up to block arrows early on, but in the end you just have to leg it and hopefully you will survive his first breath attack and make it down the stairs which are midway across the bridge. I presume this is the area you mean. You never actually have to kill the dragon in the game.

Bought the ability to leave messages and found the ability to summon people. How do I sell unwanted items?

Keep everything you pick up, you can sell them for souls much later on in the game. The only things that contribute to your equip weight are things you actually have equipped.

I'm sure you knew most of that but anyway! :)

When you see groups of enemies, you should fire arrows at one to pull them away from the group. If you get close you just agro them all and make the fight harder for yourself. If you pull and kite them towards you using arrows, you can normally 1 v 1 them. It makes it easier if you do this where you might encounter strong enemies in narrow places too, use arrows to get them into places where you have the advantage.

Cheers for the tips. :)

I have found the blacksmith, haven't got any souls to buy that crest though. I assume that's the door that the fat NPC wants opening?

And I haven't got any long range weapons, Sly. Well, I've got two light bows but they're useless as I can't figure out how to aim with them, and they're pretty weak.

I'm switching between my fireballs and battle axe - I've just now figured out how to do a quick switch between them, before I had to go through the menu mid-battle.

I'm really enjoying this in a perverse way, or at least I was but I'm making so little progress at the moment, it's like groundhog day.

I'm sorely tempted to write this playthrough off as experience and start again - the earlier areas were much more enjoyable, I'm just finding myself lost now as there's so many more paths to take and I have no idea which to do.

Oh and that dragon that you're meant to arrow in the tail - by complete fluke, I managed to out-fox it and got to the other end of the bridge. Embarrassed, it then fucked off never to be seen again! But that does mean that I'm lacking the weapon it drops.

Here's my current stats - feel free to tell me how much I'm doing it wrong.

Equip them, then press Y so you hold the bow 2 handed. The point of firing arrows at them is just to get their attention. You are not wanting to kill them (although it is a bonus if it does hurt them), you just want to drag them from groups or areas where you are at a disadvantage. You'll know what I mean when you get groups of mobs or mobs in awkward places which means you can't get a good swing at them.

No, that's a story related door - you will get a cut-scene when that opens. The door i'm talking about is in another location (very close to the blacksmith). You literally can't miss it. ;) Don't forget that the strong enemy below the blacksmith can be ran past, you are not expected to fight him at that stage.

Like Sly said, the purpose of bows isn't to inflict damage. Just to draw enemies. Bows damage scales off dex not strength. There is really no need to raise dex, and you can raise bow damage quite effectively by reinforcement anyway. I used a reinforced Short Bow for the entire game (well, as far as i've played).

Don't worry about the dragon. Starting from the bonfire it was guarding - if you cross the bridge, towards undead burg, it will came back. You actually need 16 strength to wield that sword (which i'm guessing you know if you've read bout it!). It's an excellent early game weapon but don't forget it scales off nothing - it's attack power will always be 200. So a reinforced weaker weapon that scales off strength can quickly become stronger than it.

According to the intended progression path you should hit up the area below the Undead Burg next (provided you have beaten the Parish boss). That's not what i did but i did level up to an extreme in the location i was talking about so it depends. Go wherever you can survive the longest really...

Those stats are quite spread out - i would not recommend being a jack of all trades. But if you want to be a pyro-melee combo i don't know, i guess it has to be done! I would say google it but it's hard not to end up reading everything about the game and spoiling it for yourself in the process...

I really haven't read anything deep about the game, I just remembered people saying to shoot the dragon's tail for an easier kill and it gives you a decent sword.

I'm pretty much certain that I'm gonna start again now.

I ran past that boss and went into the garden type area which is a nice change of scenery after all the walls and undead people. But I just can't get any further because of a couple of knights that I can barely scratch.

My problem is that I'm no good at dodging attacks so I guess I should specialise in long range damage?

There's a door near that area with no standard lock so I guess you mean that door?

There's loads of places that I've missed so far, one involving a cut scene boss on the roof which just destroyed me so I went this way instead. It's things like that which are putting me off the game as I really have no clue as to where I should be going. It's not like a standard open world game or Metroidvania where it's a little obvious, this gives you no clue whatsoever, you just try it die, move somewhere else. I'd prefer a little pushing in the right direction.

I reckon I'll start again, spend a lot of time looping round Undead Burg (I think it was?) level grinding and find myself a guide to get the most out of the game, some basic directions of where to go in what order. Otherwise I'll have paid 40 quid for something I'll barely play.

I wouldn't recommend Darkroot Garden at least until you have the Drake Sword, or something stronger. And probably more vitality. Before grinding my level, i explored it level 18 and ran into the exact same problem. I don't really think that long range is a viable option for the entire game, far too many enemies get up in your face, and especially bosses. But i could be talking through my hat! As for dodging, keep your shield up, circle, be patient. Sometimes you have to roll around or jump backwards - but more often than not calm circling will serve you better than falling all over the place. Locking on can be more of a hindrance than a help.

Yeah that's the place. I levelled up from level 18 to level 70 in there, so yeah... My experience of the game post the Undead Parish was probably a bit skewed! That's also a good pvp spot though. If you want to have a bit fun, go in there in human form and you'll be invaded after a while.

That boss is actually the next thing you are supposed to do. If you can turn human, you will see Solaire's summon sign outside the door. He will be a big help. Plus there will always be a white summon sign around. 2 extra swords will make life a lot easier. But you should probably attempt the fight for a while on your own to get the hang of it before spending any humanity. I did it at level 18 with Solaire in the end, I died a lot of times fighting them on my own but i learned a lot too.

The game isn't as open as it might seem. The whole Darkroot area is simply a dead end that loops around. The graveyard below firelink shrine leads to two areas that you have no need to visit before reaching a key story point in the game. Same with the New Londo Ruins. The next area you are supposed to go to (through the door that the basement key unlocks, on the undead burg side of the bridge with the dragon), is linear for a long time.

The wiki is excellent by the way:

Cheers for that, very handy. :)

I also found a good guide on gamefaqs that will lead me in the right direction, will start from scratch today and just grind round Undead Burg.

I'm happy with the class I made - the fireballs come in handy and the hand-to-hand worked - I'd just find it too hard to get back to where I wanted to be.

I've been very surprised with the game, it really is perversely entertaining. The gamestyle feels very similar to Fable except that went out of its way to streamline things and help you and this just kicks you in the teeth.

  • 3 months later...

I decided I wasn't getting punished enough with Trials Evolution (heh, yeah.... :( ) so booted this back up and made a 3rd character. I didn't make any amazing changes to be honest, I should've made a mage type dude but went for my usual build.

Anyway, today I gave up on that and booted up my original level 22 stuck in Dark Root Garden and somehow got her back to Undead Berg where I feel much safer. Got her to level 26 by the time I turned it off. That dragon is still there and I still don't know how to aim with my arrows to get its tail. But failing that I can still loop round and bypass it.

ive been playing this.

its incredible.

feck all the guides, you can get that tail in abut 30 arrows.

you have to zoom in on the tail & aim for the bulbous end.

i cant remember but you fie either as the tail swings out of shot or on its way back into shot from the apex of its little swing.

you'll waste a few arrows lining it up & getting the timing but it doesnt take ages & the sword is very handy.

ive killed a few mini bosses with arrows from a distance, its cheap but works.

Up on l stick or is it dpad, you have to be holdings bkw in both hands though.

Ive killed the black knights in parish and burg. Killed that big guy at the bottom of the tower where you access the taurus demon.

Think in nearly level 30. Pyromancer. Got the drake sword but loving the wing spear nabbed from the skeleton graveyard near firelink shrine.

Currently trying to mentally prepare to retackle the belfry gargoyles.

And im done. Nearly! Got to lower undead burg. Avoided the capra demon. Spam killled the giant electric demon near the smith in parish too.

And breath.

Turned out I was using a bow instead of crossbow, or something. Anyway I did it! But the bastard is still alive. <_<

Anyway, here are my current stats:

darksoulsstats.JPG

Apparently the winged spear is amazing but looking at my stats, is it really worth changing my enhanced Battle Axe?

wingedspear.JPG

I take it the Drake is worth it though?

darksoulsdrake.JPG

Any tips on which bits I should or shouldn't be putting stat points into would be grand. I've mostly gone for HP.

Vitality, Endurance and Strength. Pump those motherfuckers. Don't be a jack of all trades. By the time you reach level 70 or 80 and you've only been raising those 3 stats you'll be glad you did!

Attunement, Intelligence and Faith are for magic users. It doesn't pay to mix melee and magic.

It isn't worth putting any points into resitance or dexterity. I raised them to 20 but regretted it, the effect was so minimal. Stat points end up being precious commodities in this game. You would have to raise dex if you wanted to be a ranged-weapon specialist. Wouldn't be much fun though, i don't think!

One thing to bear in mind is which stat a weapon's damage scales with(the A,B,C,D,E thing). The Drake Sword scales with nothing, it's 200 attack power starts out being really useful, but as you level up and your strength goes up, you will come across weapons that are stronger once the stat scaling is taken into account.

i dont know what its like since it got patched, but when the drake starts to lose punch, elemental weapons were the next 'upgrade'. they used to do better damage than the stat scaling weapons for the first playthrough at least (unless youre grinding obscenely to godlike levels). lightning seemed to the most universally effective.

Radiofloyd - i was told increasing dex was better than strength! Seems to be working out, for wing spear and the katana you get off the undead merchant. Have both at + 5 and not really using drake sword at all.

Cant upload pic to forum from phone! For stats - at lvl 32 with basics of

Vit18. End15. Str16. Dex24.

Hendo: do you have the master key? To get to that guy at the bottom of the taurus demon tower? He drops a ring that makes combat movement a lot easier.

I have the master key, not sure where that is though.

I have equipped the drake sword but I'm moving noticeably slower so might go back to my axe.

Of things I've come across and not killed yet - a knight at the top of the tower up a spiral staircase, near where the dragon sits. And the knight at the bottom of a load of spiral staircases in Undead Burg before you get to the dragon.

black knights are pains but they always have some easy weakness or tactic.

the one in undead burg

- clear the entire place of other enemies to give you plenty of space.

arrow him in the back of the head from a distance then run heading back to the bonfire direction.

when you get to that room which leads out onto that bridge before the bonfire turn around & close the door.

the balck knight will keep trying to get in against the door (he can hit you through it). you can nip out onto the bridge heading for the binfire & fill him with arrows!

if that works, and you want the tips for the other in parish, let me know - quick tip - he doesnt like going to church.

It depends on the weapon you end up with long term. For me it was the black knight halberd which is an amazing weapon, that required 34 strength to use and scaled with strength more than dex. If you are using dex based weapons then by all means, stick with it, and leave strength alone.
