Sega has announced standalone downloadable game Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

It's set for release in summer 2012.

It contains an overhaul of the game's mechanics, balance and animations. There are new game modes (one-on-one online battle and new single-player mode), new arenas (including those with fences and walls that are different for every round) and customisable character items.

Two new characters have been added to the roster: Taka-Arashi from Virtua Fighter 3 and an all-new character, Jean Kujo.

Meanwhile, Final Showdown implements simplified controls for new players.

One for the fighting fans?

A re-re-re-release of VF5 coming to steam with rollback netcode. Wasn't aware this was never on PC but pretty cool to see, even if this is mostly something for the fans.

From what I understand this is not the new VF project SEGA has been talking about, but presumably just a smaller release to get the name out there again.

Edit: maybe should have put this in the topic over in the Games section, there was a bit more talk about it back when Ultimate Showdown came out.

I'm looking forward to trying this. I remember putting a good bit of time into VF4's single player mode, I think it had some sort of ranked system or something against the AI but of course there were certain types of spammable moves you could do over and over. I remember finding it quite difficult on the skill floor level, VF4 anyway, just that it doesn't generallyh allow that kind of spamming and isn't as immediately gratifying as Tekken is as the stupid monke level. To me, I remember it being relatively 'disciplined' compared with what I was used to. To a somewhat austere level maybe but also satisfying to get better with

Would be nice to have some competition in the 3D fighter space

It's always been a bit of the connoisseurs 3D fighter and geared towards the hardcore moreso than any other fighting game of its ilk. Harada has talked in length about how important the monke button mashing is to them because it allows their huge casual market to do cool stuff in Tekken without using a single brain cell. It's a bit of a difficult situation for VF because its fans wouldn't really want that, but considering we're looking at the third release of VF5 here they have to mix it up somehow with the next game to become 'relevant' again, or successful, rather.

Anyway, yes, this is hard. And it's also a game that's nearing its 20th anniversary, so if you hop online people are going to murder you.
