radiofloyd Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Yeah it's more like Fable or Baldur's Gate than a Bethesda game. The games are heavily story and character driven, with decent sizen environments but not open world. Combat in the first Witcher game is timing based with three stances (fast/slow/group attacks) and some magic thrown in. In the second game it's much the same, I can't really remember. Although I think they got rid of the stances. The first game is fantastic and I wouldn't recommend skipping it. If you have a decent PC it will look great. Both games are very dark but I think the first game is more atmospheric and more memorable (in terms of story, decisions, locations). However the first game is at least 20 hours longer than The Witcher 2 and that's where its problems come from. But I don't think that's any reason to skip the game.
Cyberpunk Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Although others have recommended jumping straight into Witcher 2, I personally think you'd be missing out on a great game, and fantastic story. I loved the Witcher, and I actually thought the sequel was a little dumbed down. The hi-res pack that came out for it really did it justice. Of course now, its part of the game in the form of the Director's Cut. It was also a more fleshed out story. Don't skip it. Its an underrated classic.

The only problem is it got average enough reviews (same as Driftmoon really, another game I was interested in) so that's pushed it down my wishlist a little (my mental wishlist I mean, it's not actually on my Steam wishlist). I'll be hemorrhaging money come the Steam summer sale though.
