A Song A Day

Thankfully, it wasn't that other Dancing in the Moonlight. A pretty decent example of that genre at that time, everything comes together really nicely. But none of it is as impressive as that Sax player's stache.

I'm gonna keep the theme running.

Seemingly a cover of a song by some cat called Richard Berry.. I never thought I'd learn something from the Youtube comments sectioin.

I enjoyed that, pretty sure i have heard it before somewhere. Has it been covered by another band?

That was pretty funky for a wife beater. :)

I kept expecting vocals to come in but it does work as an instrumental. I must admit I haven't heard much of Ike Turner's stuff outside of the "What's Love Got To Do With It?" film.

Mine for today:

That reminds me of the bands I used to see in the south. You had anything up to 12 people on stage all playing something different. Also, I love the woman southern accent. The men sound like they should be taking the short bus though.

And now for a blast from the past that a lot of people have probably forgotten about.

I really like that one Hendo put up, I think I may be a dorment Country fan, which scares me a little. The Ike Turner one was good, too. But I struggle to listen to blokes that hit birds, it's why I so struggle to listen to all my Chris Brown songs now. I don't want to do the Tatu one, it would require me to listen to it. I've not heard it for years and I'd like to keep it that way.

I'll take that. I really like that song, it's a brilliantly made pop song - I especially love the bridge/keyboard solo that makes it sound like a dingy Russian club.

I can ignore the obviously fake and cynical lesbianism because the song itself stands up.

I wish i could forget about TATU Sly, they suck fish flaps and so do all their songs. For shame.

EDIT: Hendo and i posted at the same time, whoopsie do. Awesome contrast of opinion. I cant hear your song Hendo cos im at work, otherwise id reply to yours.

It obviously takes a trained musician to see the brilliance of Tatu.

I'll do both submitted songs. Hendo's, I heard it, but it didn't sink in. If I was at the right place and heard that then it would maybe make more impact but I'm not cultured enough to have much thought on it. I bet it would sound great in a restaurant.. is that racist? Probably.

To Dogman's. Ah, something I kind of understand. Rap music you hear day to day doesn't sound like that anymore, I'd be more into it if it did. Pretty intense and spooky, loved the scratching malarkey at the end. Well done, better than Hendo's vain attempt at broadening horizons. ;)

That reply made me smile, you pretty much said exactly what i wanted to read as a response. You dont hear music like that day to day, but it is still around, down where the worms live. I agree, the scratch at the end is awesome. There's plenty more where that came from.

Sorry i cant do your song, i have no speakers at work.

I'm not sure i liked DC's choice. I found it a bit to introverted (think thats what i mean anyway). I like music that comes from hard times, but this i couldn't buy into. Sorry big man.

Sex and Candy - Marcy Playground

Very mid-to-late 90's, therefore I quite liked it, it made me think a bit of Beck and Nirvana among other things. Rhyming "myself" with "myself" is a poor show, though.

My choice is Egøverride by Bob Mould

Crayman yours was the definition of 90s indie rock. Meaning no offence it sounded like a million songs I'd catch late at night on mtv or as the videos in Beavis & Buthead. Not that I disliked it though (and I think I might even remember it), not sure I'd actively listen to it but I can imagine I would have done a few years back

As for mine Frightened Rabbit - Backwards Walk

Pretty much what you said about Craymen's pick but the modern day equivalent. For me it's just really dull and I found it hard to listen to the whole thing.

I pretty much hated all of that song. It's what people call arty, when something is terrible but they are afraid of calling it shit because people will point and laugh at them because 'they don't get it' even when the people that laugh don't get it either and are just been pretentious wankers. I think it is an elitism sort of thing with song like that and people saying they are great and sang with such emotion that you must be dead inside if you don't enjoy it. I know art is subjective and that, but this song was like one of those shitty attempts like that person that did the thumb print in blutack a while back, or the lights in the room. If that makes me unpopular for saying that, then fuck you guys. ;)

Rolling the clock back to '64.

I like that, reminds me of my childhood as a load of '60's tunes would get played in my house or when on holiday out camping.

The one I choose is also from the '60's but wouldn't have been played intentionally by the old folks because I think The Doors were a little too odd for my parent's tastes. I don't hear rock 'n' roll in it though, just jazz.

Completely agree with this. There is a version with a more rocky intro and rougher tempo (might be a live version?). I think a bit of the Doors stuff sounds creepy, I think it's the bass, it's got a bit of a bad trip to it, unless that's just something I've associated to it over the years. It's a great song though, it's got a few interesting hooks to it

Other Sly got me into these a few years back. It might be too delicate for mouth breathing Sly ;)

I loved that. So gentle and soothing, and reminded me of some of Tim Buckley's stuff.

mine will be coming shortly.

Edit: speaking of Buckley...

That was really pleasant. It was more crooner-y than I expected but a good effort anyway.

This is quite a long one.

Yeah it is a bit long. I think under the right circumstances it would sound amazing to me but when I listened to it yesterday it just seemed to drag.

I'm sure my choice for today will not go down well, but if nothing else the drum solo is great, not as good as the studio version but then that's jazz for you.
