Wooty toot. Got my new hard drive, fitted it easily enough, and Cyberpunks CD worked a treat (thanks CP ) All is runnin well, just need to spend a bi of time at the weekend copying all my music and documents back on, didnt actually tak that long last time. There's fuck all on it at the minute tho, just explorer, Opera, 7-zip and Sopcast... I mean sky player

Going to order the new case tomorrow i think, then make sure i can house the motherboard before getting a new gpu

Hmm, think I've fucked this up a bit. I got my new case and card, but the case doesnt have the right cables. Im hoping Spatular and his knowledge of Maplin will be able to fix it because I havent got a clue at all. I've only got one thing connecting to my HDD, which must be wrong, and that's not a power cable i dont think. The spare cables are white, they seem to take metal 'tubes', about 0.5 cm in diameter (at a guess)

i might be able to help. Are you using your old dell motherboard? You should be able to salvage the HDD cables from that, you'll need a Power Supple unit for the case if you haven't already got one. This will power the mother board, the HDD and the DVD rom drive (and any other drive you might have) then you should be good to go.

::EDIT:: ok i did some back tracking over the thread. Think you'll need to get yourself a new PSU as well, don't think the one from your dell would fit in another case.

i guess the problem is the new power supply which came with the case? like i guess you figgured the hdd needs one connector to the motherboard and one to the power supply, same for the dvd drive.

does the new power supply generally have the same connectors as the dell one? can you match them up to which ones went where before?

anyway yeah i can have a look at it at the weekend if it isn't sorted by then. a forum trying to re-assemble a pc via pictures will be fun

It could also be the motherboard touching the case as there's no guards to stop that. I'm going to put my dell back together tonight so I might take some pictures tonight so I can get some preweekend advice and spatular knows what he's getting into

I'll try to sort the pictures out tomorrow night, I've got a really dingy led bulb in my room, there's no way i could have done it tonight because i got back when it was dark.

Got the Dell working, the HDD seems to be doing something, I'm not entirely sure what so I might have connected something wrong (it's running ok, but the lights on a lot). Either way it was a good learning experience, even if I've not actually achieved anything (other than potentially slowing my hard drive)

Hurray for more computer problems.

I was missing a connection, Spatular helped me sort that. We got everything connected, the leds on my new case all set up, the fam blowing away, but then we hit a problem. Either we fucked up installing the latest drivers straight off for the graphics card, or something else is going wrong.

Either way the end result is that when i boot the computer with the drivers for my card installed (Geforce GT 240) before windows loads i get a blue screen and restart. Uninstall the drivers, or load in safe mode and it all works, just seems to be an issue with the drivers that even a system restore doesnt fix.

Going to wipe windows again i think. Heavy handed but i wont lose anything bar music, which i can put on again easy enough, and some programs i can just redownload

Reinstalling Windows hasn't worked, going to have to see if I can send the card back, assuming they'll let me. Pain in the arse, need to find out what's compatible before I buy the next one

sorry to hear the re-install didn't work. it was all going so well untill we had to install the new graphics drivers

which drivers did you try after the re-install? (we had the one on the CD and 2 different ones from the nvidia site)

i was thinking about that guy that said it didn't work with 4GB ram, all your ram slots were filled so you might have 4GB but 32 bit windows only recognises just over 3 so taking one stick out might be worth a try...

I'm off 'sick' today so I've took my pc to the shop to once and for all sort a new card out. They were trying to get me to buy a £200 card, and I'd have been tempted if my wages were in. I was trying to pin them down on how much they were going to charge to fit it and how much a likely needed new psu (£35 apparently) would cost. Ended up plumping for a £60 card and the whole thing is still costing me over £120
