I also ran a malware scan that took at least 5 hours (I fell asleep so I dont know exactly how long it took). All seemed well till about 5 minutes ago, now it's playing up again
spatular Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 stupid computers. i'm having a pretty annoying time trying to install xp on this laptop, vista's partition utility wanted to give me 25mb maximum for a new partition when the drive had ~50gb free space, eventually sorted that, made a 30gb partition, tried to install xp and it BSODs before it gets far into loading the installation CD, seems like this is because of the xp disk being too old so i need to add the service packs to the disk, which i've got instructions for and am going to try tonight, can't wait.

I ran a checkdisk on it last night, started at 11.30pm, and it finished at about 4pm today Fortunately I've got my old computer to use for now, but I'm going to have to sort out a new HDD from somewhere. The only bonus is I can get a stupidly big one, but really what i had was fine so long as i didnt install everything i possibly could on it

More work than I thought it would be, trying to find a 500gb SATA drive, everywhere only seems to have SATA II I'm toying with getting a new graphics card too. Ive got a slim pc so I have to have a half size card, which makes finding one a pain. And to make things worse pretty much all of them would mean I have to get a new power box thing

Yeah, most motherboards will go into a new case. You get little copper mounting screws with the case, and the case has lots of different holes to place them, to take all sorts of mother boards. You just line up the mounting screws with the holes on your board. Just to let you have an idea of price, Ebuyer currently have 10 models of full size pc cases, no parts inside, for under £15

If i had the money id just buy a whole new pc, but as it is maybe thirty odd quid for a card running the risk of having to buy a power box. I did see a halfsize card for about $100 that was actually a bit of a beast, bit much for me, but it would keep me from having to upgrade for a few years EDIT: Actually im looking at the cost of it, might be doable to buy a new case, card, then possibly a power thing if it needs it. Might have to pm you if thats ok

Novatech will do an NVidea G-Force 9 for about £40, and with enough ram on your system, it's run any current game. My son has one, and he can run the new Just Cause 2 demo at 1024 x 768 with no problems. He has 3 gig ram, and runs Windows 7. You should do this. I have been thinking about playing some older games on my system and tbh it's a fucking minefield I don't really want to tread. I've been working with them since the heady days of Windows 3.1, and I know my stuff. sorry to but into Ben's thread again, just wondered if you've any idea about this - was thinking about getting need for speed shift, my pc meets the minimum requirements, just, appart from the cpu - Intel Core™2 Duo 2 GHz or faster, mine is an older pentium D dual core 2.8ghz, think it'll work? i used to know my stuff about this sort of thing too but i'm well out of the loop these days.
