Broadband woes

I had trouble with virgin, turns out there kit is crap when you live in a flat and everyone has the same router, in my house its awesome, 75mb wifi everywhere, toilet, bedroom, garden its like having an upgrade!

 

I changed my router signal setting at the flat to one the other tenants weren't using, I used a piece of software which showed everyones router setting, can't remember what I used now, sorry.

There's a lot of them available, loads on the phone appstores too. I've used one called InSSIDer, which was pretty good.

 

Anyway, this is the opposite of a Broadband Woe... I upgraded my home network today (replaced my ageing Homeplugs and network switch), and have almost doubled my download speed.

I had just assumed it was one of these "Up To" situations, where the speed you get depended on how busy it was in your area, etc.

When we've finally moved, I need to get  on fibre. ADSL is terrible around us.

Virgin introduced a 200Mbs service recently, so I guess that would be the top level rating.

I've got 200mb now from virgin well i would of, but they sent me the new router but no power adapter. Still waiting for that to be delivered!

Cancelled my Virgin recently, was paying £32 odd a month for it and barely using it, gone all in with BT.

More than I should tbh we have Tivo 1 gb, TV XL package, BT Sports included and internet comes to £69, should be £75 but I argued the last price increase, still locked in for 6 months, but the internet on its own is £45 so worth keeping the tv package as the other half hammers the internet and tv tbh.

That's the top level most expensive broadband & TV bundle, I'd assume. It's comparable to the top Sky one.

I hate that broadband providers make you pay for phone service too.

Its wrong they force the landline phone but Virgin don't, we don't have a landline, wouldn't use it if we did.

Aren't they scrapping the mandatory landline charge of you use the BT line now?

yeah, we talked a big game when we moved, how we were going to get 100mb because it wasn't that expensive. But, we're still paying for the internet contract on the last house, and we're paying too much for that because reasons, so we had to be a bit more realistic. I think we're on about 40mb, I've only seen it hit that a couple of time, but I've just done a test, got 20mb while myself and my housemate are both streaming tv, so it should do. 

 

I downloaded the new Deus Ex in about 20 minutes yesterday, I was streaming something then too, can't really complain when the internet is good enough to basically let us to what we want with it

The odd thing with the phoneline, and I didn't know this but it's on the first 5 questions for a mortgage application, and scores negative of you haven't got one, I only had mine when I had sky.

@mr lakituexactly. We managed on our old Sky one with less than 40, with 3 of us using it, all of us streaming everything because we don't have a tv signal (and even if we did we're likely watching sports streamed or netflix/amazon/skygo). It's more important to have the means for us all to use it uninterrupted rather than me being able to download a game in 5 minutes

This is the main reason we need fibre. Where the furthest point from

the exchange you can be pretty much.

Before my upgrade as it stands now and this is the wifi connection so slightly slower than the hard wired Xbox/ps4

not sure how reliable these scores are. I've tested a few times on my pc and got the following, did another one on another site and hot 5 meg higher, who knows

 

 

 

On my phone though it's a different story. So either I'm being capped by my wifi dongle, which is supposed to allow for high speeds, and my phone has a better wifi chip (possible), or the app is wildly inaccurate

Virgin media, you can't make it up, my new router for superfast bb has hit a wall, basically the power supply unit the socket the earth pin isn't there, so call them, so far I have multiple different power sources but none the one I need, they are so difficult to talk to!
