Great but unsurprising news. Hopefully it's not just going to be Batman against Joker again though. There are a lot of bad guys to choose from so it would seem silly to go with the Joker as the main guy again, especially since he appears to have aids or at the very least a bad case of swine flu.

There was no doubt that Batman Arkham Asylum 2 would be developed considering the huge success that the game has had, and now the recent rumors of this have now been confirmed. Square Enix decided to make the official announcement while at the 2009 Video Game Awards.

There are no release date details yet, but we know that it will be in 2010, more than likely in the second half. Square Enix certainly have their work cutout, as the current Batman Arkham Asylum was made game of the year early on in its release.

Not much is known about the storyline but according to Play.tm, the story should carry on where the original game left off. This would mean that we would get to see the Joker once again. Mark Hamill provided the voice in the first game, so should reprise his role once again.

We are not sure who the other characters will be, but they will need to have something extra special, as The Joker is awesome in the current game. The sequel will be a larger game, something that fans will enjoy.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Will Publish the Rocksteady Studios Sequel Worldwide

Warner’s confirmed it’s to publish the now-announced Batman: Arkham Asylum 2, not Square Enix Europe.

“We are thrilled to build a global game franchise from Batman: Arkham Asylum, which is receiving an incredible response from gamers and fans of Batman around the world,” said WBIE boss Martin Tremblay.

“Rocksteady has taken Batman to a new level in the video game space and we are committed to delivering a sequel the fans will love.”

It’s a worldwide deal. Unlucky, Herr Square. You’ll just have to settle with FFXIII, instead.

If you go to the trailer website then its immediately obvious at least one of the characters that will be in the next one, mister Harvey Dent/Two face. Being able to stalk around the streets of a big old city and potentially along the rooftops could be pretty awesome too, although the lack of development time has me a bit cautious about what to expect from it though.

The sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum has been revealed as Batman: Arkham City.

The game will be released in autumn 2011 on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

The Game Informer website spilled the beans as part of a teaser for an upcoming issue of the magazine.

Of note in the illustrations provided is Catwoman. She stands back-to-back with Batman, with the caped crusader holding her whip. She's also pictured dangling upside, bound in chains.

According to a press release that's just popped through our virtual letterbox: "Batman: Arkham City builds upon the intense, atmospheric foundation of Batman: Arkham Asylum, sending players soaring into Arkham City, the new maximum security 'home' for all of Gotham City's thugs, gangsters and insane criminal masterminds.

"Set inside the heavily fortified walls of a sprawling district in the heart of Gotham City, this highly anticipated sequel introduces a brand-new story that draws together a new all-star cast of classic characters and murderous villains from the Batman universe, as well as a vast range of new and enhanced gameplay features to deliver the ultimate experience as the Dark Knight."

Glad it's not coming out this year after all, more time to spend on polishing what I hope is a great follow-up.

One secret left from the first game that no-one found, and it hinted at the sequel.

Many gamers spent hours scouring every nook and cranny of Arkham Asylum last year. Whether it was Riddler trophies, interview tapes, or Chronicles of Arkham, the game wasn't short on hidden goodies. However, there was one area that most people never even knew existed...Warden Quincy Sharp's secret room. Inside this area, you can clearly see blueprints that lay out Arkham City. We ask developer Rocksteady how it remained hidden for so long and we provide a video guide on how to find it yourself.

Even if you've played Batman: Arkham Asylum through and through, got 100 percent clearance, and unlocked all of the achievements or trophies, you still probably haven't found Warden Sharp's secret room right off of his office. It's not located on any of the maps. You can't see the weak wall with Batman's detective vision. And you can only blow it up with several applications of explosive foam. We asked Rocksteady Studios lead narrative designer Paul Crocker how the team kept it hidden in the Internet age:

While building Batman: Arkham Asylum, we placed a number of ‘hooks’ into the game that tie into the ‘Arkham-Verse’. From the beginning we knew that Quincy was a bad guy, and planned what his next move would be. The room obviously ties into Arkham City, but to be fair, we hid it pretty well. We did assume that it would be found eventually and after following forum posts for 6 months or so, decided to announce it in the ‘Game of the Year’ podcast. The fans of the game have been amazing and again, reading the forums, we can see how much they value the efforts we have put into creating the background stories for the various characters and it was great to see all the posts and theories about the secret room once it was discovered. What I think people are really going to enjoy is not just how Arkham Asylum led to Arkham City, but also how the story in Arkham City sheds new light on the events you saw in Arkham Asylum.

Also details from the Game Informer issue:

Gameinformer Story info:

- Quincy Sharp is now running for mayor.

- Arkham Asylum and Black Gate Prison are unfit to hold inmates.

- Quincy Sharp buys off part of the slums and walls it off, creating Arkham City.

- Hugo Strange is in charge of Arkham City.

- Two-Face plans to execute Catwoman to gain respect of inmates.

- The overdose of venom may not be what's wrong with the Joker.

Gameinformer Gameplay info:

- You are now able to counter two attacks at once.

- More puzzles.

- All gadgets included in the first game are available from the start.

- Side missions now feature in the game.

- Gangs roam Arkham City, these are recorded in Batman's criminal database.

- You find people who work for Ridler to find Ridler challenges.

- Batman has his smoke bomb.

Catwoman is my fave Batman character (apart from the Halle Berry version) so glad she is appearing in this one. The first thing I thought when I saw the picture of her and Batman was that it would be a co-op game. I do want that and dont want that
