Medal of Honor

From teh Eurogamer

EA has once again teased the rejuvenation of the Medal of Honor series following its latest round of financial results.

"In the months ahead, you'll hear more about our plans to revitalise core IP, including the Medal of Honor franchise," EA Games label boss Frank Gibeau said during a conference call (thanks Joystiq).

That comes just months after big boss John Riccitiello said that the next Medal of Honor was "somewhere out there" but he was "not yet in a position to discuss specific plans" and would "do so in due course".

Despite arguably setting World War II FPS events in motion when it published Medal of Honor: Allied Assault back in the day, EA's series has been on a break recently and has lost ground to its rival, Activision's Call of Duty.

The last big multiplatform Medal of Honor title was MOH: Airborne, which we rather liked. The series' most recent outing was MOH: Heroes 2 on Wii.

What's the betting it won't be set in World War II?

I loved the first two on the Playstation 1, played them again recently and they're really slow and cumbersome to control.

Yeah, I'm sure IW are made up of staff that worked on some of the earlier Medal of Honour games, atleast thats what I remember from when the first CoD that came out, it was kind of selling point.

I only played That Medal of Honour game that started on the beaches at D-Day, I also played the quite dull sequel to that one set in Japan. I can't say I'm clambering for another game like that one came out recently.

I really enjoyed Airborne. MoH gets a bit of a bad rep more because of the terrible PS2 games than anything I think. If they could do something more up to date with that same open world feel to it I would get all excited and shizz.

Sly will be interested:

EA has officially announced the new Medal of Honor game for release on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010.

Simply called "Medal of Honor", the game is set in present-day Afghanistan and focuses on Tier 1 Operators - super army soldiers, in other words - who get involved in situations all around the world.

"The development team has been working closely with Tier 1 Operators from the US Special Operations Community since the earliest stages of development to create the most authentic modern war experience," EA said in a press release.

While EALA works to create a "best-in-class" single-player campaign, EA DICE will work on multiplayer.

"When we first set out to reinvent Medal of Honor, we wanted to stay true to its roots of authenticity and respect for the soldier but bring it into today's war. The Tier 1 Operator is the most disciplined, deliberate and prepared warrior on the battlefield. He is a living, breathing, precision instrument of war," said Greg Goodrich, executive producer.

"We are honoured to have the rare opportunity to work closely with these men to create a game that shares their experience."

The packshot (see left for the Xbox 360 version) shows a bearded, sunglasses-wearing Tier 1 Operator clutching a rifle. The colour scheme - white shifting to black - suggests EA is aiming for a similar shades-of-grey approach to its great rival, Call of Duty, which "went modern" just over two years ago.

The fact EA is targeting Medal of Honor for 2010 suggests that EA isn't leaving things to chance, mind you - following the release of Modern Warfare 2 last month, 2010 is an off year for Infinity Ward.

Ta. :)

Electronic Arts boss John Riccitiello has said the Modern Warfare games are all starting to look the same to him.

"If you've played Modern Warfare, and you've played the first one - and you've played the last Call of Duty - it's sort of starting to feel like they're making the same game again," he told Kotaku.

The silver-haired executive was keen to point out he thinks Infinity Ward "are great", adding, "It's not about them being bad for us having to be great too."

Riccitiello's comments came as EA announced a new Medal of Honor game, coming to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010. He reckons the release could give EA the edge in the FPS genre.

"I'm not saying it's going to happen tomorrow," said the platinum-maned chief. "But in the way that Activision sort of alternates sequels of Modern Warfare and Call of Duty and owns the leadership position in first-person shooter, between Medal of Honor and Battlefield, I want it back. And we're going to get there with innovation and quality."

According to Riccitiello, the next Battlefield: Bad Company will be "a worthy competitor to Modern Warfare" - perhaps even good enough to beat it.

"We think we've got an advantage over Modern Warfare 2 with our multiplayer... Frankly, once you get past, sort of, four people on a map, I think our gameplay is better," he said.

Riccitiello cited being able to control vehicles rather than just ride them and take both buildings and their occupants out as highlights. "Personally I get a silly amount of pleasure out of it," he added.

Bless him for trying.

I dunno if it will topple the CoD series but you could say when games really try to be better then one another we are only the real winners. I think it would be a bad idea to release them head to head, though.

For the record I love the beard, it takes a monumental piss over Price's stash. MoH > MW2 already.

Those games were not made for us silly, they were made for the casuals innit? ;)

And Rallisport was awesome, the last good rally sim imho, considering the CM series took a nose dive and is now no longer a proper rallying game.

More info:

Electronic Arts has revealed the next Medal of Honor game will be released in the "fall".

That's according to the publisher's website, where US gamers can pre-order the title already.

"Operating directly under the National Command Authority, a relatively unknown entity of handpicked warriors are called on when the mission must not fail," reads the blurb. "They are the Tier 1 Operators."

Of America's 2 million airmen, marines, soldiers, sailors, tinkers and tailors, not the last two, just 50,000 fall under the control of Special Operations Command.

"The Tier 1 Operator functions on a plane of existence above and beyond even the most highly trained Special Operations Forces. Their exact numbers, while classified, hover in the low hundreds." The top one per cent of the top one per cent of the top one per cent then, probably. We can't do maths.

The new MOH has been inspired by these "living, breathing, precision instruments of war", and even developed with the help of some of them. "Players will step into the boots of these warriors and apply their unique skill sets to a new enemy in the most unforgiving and hostile battlefield conditions of present day Afghanistan." Topical.

and

The army has explained to Eurogamer that Medal of Honor's Tier 1 soldiers really are the best of the best, and "take on missions that no one else can handle".

"The Tier concept originates from Hostage Rescue Ability and has mutated to include all kinds of stuff. Around 1995 it was based on the amount of time a unit spent conducting Hostage Rescue and Direct Action. The Tier 1 teams would only do this sort of operation," relayed a source, unearthed by former British army Major Neil Powell.

"Standard" Tier 2 teams were made up of SEAL, MARSOC (United States Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command), SF (Special Forces) and Ranger forces. Tier 1 was reserved for JSOC (Joint Special Operations Command) and FBI HRT (Hostage Rescue Team) soldiers.

"Support personnel such as counter intelligence and intelligence are not Tier anything," the source added, probably hurting their feelings.

Tier 1 soldiers, as we mentioned earlier, answer to the National Command Authority. This is a term used by the US military and government to refer to the ultimate lawful source of military orders - the top of the chain. Up there the President and the Secretary of Defense call the shots and Jack Bauer answers.

Yet more info:

Electronic Arts has said that the recently released Medal of Honor trailer is "100 per cent in-game footage".

Speaking on the official website, executive producer Greg Goodrich also confirmed that the rebooted first-person shooter series has vehicle gameplay.

The new Medal of Honor takes place in Afghanistan and focuses on a group of "Tier 1 Operators". Goodrich explained that Tier 1 is a designation given to only a few units in the US special forces structure. Basically it means they're pretty wicked.

He also said that the man with the beard on the box artwork "is indeed a character" and will be revealed "along with his highly skilled and very specialised Tier 1 unit" in due course.

Goodrich also addressed the apparent tonal similarities between the new Medal of Honor and Activision's rival Modern Warfare series. He confirmed the game will be the first M-rated instalment in the previously World War II-based series. "However," he added, "we will always be grounded by our core tenets of authenticity and respect for the soldier."

Elsewhere, the executive producer said the team took the PC version of the game "as seriously as we do any other version", and said you'd be able to kick in doors. Woo.
