I cannot believe that this is missing from the retro section, I thought maybe someone would have got to it before me.

This run took me just over 2 hours to do, a lot longer than I expected it to. I am so glad the water section can be avoided on this game too, they are the weakest part of it, they really do bring the game down. I managed to pick up all the emeralds this time, it give me quite a surprise when your reward for doing so actually happened. The bosses were quite easy too, apart from the cunt of a last boss. The pinball table boss to me forever to do as well. The music was still really good. Onto 3 next. No doubt I'll be complaining about the water sections in that as well.

Surprised when you found out about Super Sonic? What the fuck were you doing during the early nineties?

I knew about it, just never activated it myself. What happens if you play through as Tails only? Does he have his own power up that eats rings?

I bought this on Xbox about 1.5 billion years ago and have finally played it.

I have mixed emotions!

Pretty much my entire life I’ve been a bigger fan of Sonic 1 than Sonic 2. As a kid I loved Sonic 2 more and was probably my most played game before 3D consoles came along. But over the decades I have played so much more Sonic 1 + seeing Sonic 1 is my earliest memory in life, these things combined has made it that past the kid stage I always just thought Sonic 1 was better.

Tonight I was almost swayed and even though I remembered Sonic 2 did this I forgot how awesome it was and it’s when Sonic is going full speed there’s a little flutter animation in his spikes to emphasise how fast he is going and it’s the coolest thing in the world. Sonic 1 kind of does it as well, but in Sonic 2 he moves a lot faster, the sprite is better and the effect is better so it’s really effective. Also I haven’t seen it in a very long time which helps.

I know a lot of people hate on Sonic and we’re way past the point I could ever defend the character but I think when Sonic is side on, not talking and just jams on the gas he’s just so fucking coooooooooool

But

BUT!

Then all the the things I didn’t really think about as a kid but really got my nerves when I was older started getting on my nerves tonight and that is for starters the special stages are savage. Just absolutely ruthless. Thankfully on Xbox there’s a save feature so I abused that and got all 7 emeralds but even with a save point some of these special stages took me 4 or 5 goes. This was sort of alleviated back on the Mega Drive because if you pressed reset on the console the game would start over again but you would keep all your emeralds so you can just play Emerald Hill Zone over and over until you got them all. I don’t know if that was intentional or a bug but every version of Sonic 2 I played on various consoles removed that which is then what makes the special zones so ridiculous.

To be able to play the game in one go and get all the emeralds in one run you would have to not only be a master at the special zones but also it’s so hard to even get access to one after Aquatic Ruin/Casino Night. Not only are they difficult to get, if you don’t get them in the first half of the game then even getting a chance to access them is very, very tough. Out of the original Mega Drive games I feel like these are the best idea for Special Stages but the difficulty is too high. And if you’re playing with Tails I would think it’s basically impossible.

IMO the only Sonic game to ever get the Special Stages right is Sonic Mania.

But even above that, even though Sonic looks better, moves faster, has the spin dash, Super Sonic, the game is longer, has cooler set pieces, has better bosses, introduced Metal Sonic, Chemical Plant Zone, the Death Egg, the plane, has that super cool ending where you fall through orbit. Sonic 2 is a much better game than Sonic 1 in so many ways. But when it really comes down to it I really don’t like a lot of the levels in this game. In order of worst to least worst

Oil Ocean

Metropolis +1

Casino Night

Mystic Cave

And as much as I do like Emerald Hill Zone it’s no Green Hill Zone and Metropolis gets a +1 because it has 3 acts boo

Here is some of more of my mixed opinions, though. I think nearly all of the levels in Sonic 2 are better designed than Sonic 1. They are so much better at letting you build up speed, apart from Oil Ocean and Casino Night most of the levels are pretty good at being about going fast and hitting jumps with forward momentum instead of backwards and forwards slow platforming like say Marble Zone. But I just really don’t dig a lot of the environments or themes for the levels. It is a cop out answer to say “This one is better, but this other one I like more”. But that is kind of how I feel about the levels in Sonic 1 and 2. I think overall the levels in the sequel are better made, but I’m really not a fan of what a lot of them are made out of.

But it does do this ?

Anyway, 1.5 billion years in the making my Sonic 2 review is finally finished and out there. It’s really fucking good! 8/10

I randomly started playing the Sega Ages version of Sonic 2 on the Switch tonight and found something really cool, and that’s they’ve included the feature/bug from the Mega Drive version that soft resetting means you keep the Chaos Emeralds from the previous play through. On the Mega Drive you simply hit reset on the console and it would work. On every rerelease of the game I’ve played since, that doesn’t work because there’s obviously no reset button.

In the Ages version they actually have a reset game option from the pause menu, and then if you go in to the options and select the game from there it resets the game but keeps the emeralds. Combine that with the save + load feature it means this was really easy to be Super Sonic by level 2

I admit I’m pretty weak having to use the soft reset bug and the save + load to get this. There’s also straight up cheat codes I could use instead of this scenic route cheat. But it’s nice nostalgia almost because the soft reset strat was the only way I could ever do this as a kid. The special stages in this game are too hard.

It makes me want to practice them. Being a big Sonic fan but not being able to complete the game without cheating makes me sound like a poser

Playing this as Knuckles reminded me how cool Knuckles was. His animations and abilities are awesome. There’s something about playing him in Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 that hits different as well, as opposed to Mania and such.

I did this playthrough in two sessions and it was a story of two halves. The first time I played up to Mystic Cave and played really well. I even got all Chaos Emeralds with no bullshit. No resets, got them all first try. Think I was lucky and just playing well but I did get them

Plahing tonight holy shit it was terrible. I had ridiculous deaths, constantly getting lost, taking me up to 4 minutes to beat one level. The final boss was so hard as well. Knuckles’ only downside is his jump is a touch smaller than Sonic and Tails. Which meant the final boss was tough because usually I just jump the claws and get free hits. But Knuckles can’t do that and you have to play the game properly. Which I haven’t done in a very long time so had to save and reload the final boss for about 30 minutes to win. He only has one attack but it took forever to get down because I haven’t done it in years. Perhaps have never done it. Sonic just jumps this shit so it’s easy.

But really enjoyed that. Knuckles is super cool and I kind of forgot.
