no, we had NOW TV for a while, but it seemed frivalous having NOW TV, Netflix, Prime and Disney+.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

 

One has to get past the initial two seasons first – they're not bad per se, but they're rather childish most of the time and don't go beyond the rather simple good vs. evil setup. Season 3 slowly starts to hint at something more and shows certain supposedly bad characters in a new light. It's Season 4 and particularly Season 5 where the entire thing finds a new rhythm and goes far beyond what you'd initially expect it to be. Some really well written characters, surprisingly tense moments and a big heart holding it all together.

 

It's a shame the visuals can't quite keep up. They're clearly doing the best they can with the means at their disposal, but there are a lot of better drawn and animated shows on Netflix than this. The soundtrack as is ace though.

See, I remember reading this back in February and thinking "well, lots of people have done that" but now having watched (most of) the show, I completely agree. It doesn't help matters that the concentration camp flashbacks are filmed in such a way to make them feel very real, but with some pretty dumb (albeit horrific) happening to people, it's almost like torture porn. I'm pretty sure it's shit, it's possibly offensive.

A little delayed. As I was watching it on catch-up, but this was Very Good. A three part mini-series on the serial killer Dennis Nielsen, as played by David Tennant. Truth by told, although the subject matter is of interest to me, I was apprehensive about this. As I don't really like Tennant (mostly Doctor Who related). But he is excellent (and extremely unnerving) in this. After the first episode alone, I don't think I'll quite look at him in the same way again. The cast and writing are strong throughout. Ultimately, if serial killers are not your thing, I find the best mindset I find to view this with (as it is recommended that you do) is paraphrased by his biographer. This isn't about him, it is a warning. 9/10

I’m glad they made this as I’ve had the book for years and never read much of it because I have lazy eyes. I’ve also listened to the last podcast on the left 2 parter about him multiple times. It’s pretty funny and insightful.

 

The only thing the show taught me was what happened to his dog that he loved ? Thats the real tragedy. Did you see the doc they showed too @OCH? You see bleep as a puppy. So cute.

 

Oh also Nilsen wrote a woe is me book called History of a drowning boy. Apparently it’s pathetic.

Yeah, I did. He really loved that dog. Which is probably the most surreal part of his story.

Yeah he did. When he first chopped someone up he considered feeding some to bleep but didn’t want to make him sick. I guess the worst part of the show is that it’s all after the fact with not much detail into what he got up to. Like once when he was pissed and took bleep for a walk he picked up a bag of insides and put them on the street for the bin men without really thinking it was some poor victim and not regular trash ??‍♂️

I read a behind the scenes for the show. The creators said they didn't do flashbacks or any other kind of details, wherein Nielsen was the only source/witness as they normally do with these kind of dramas. Not accepting his word alone of how these events transpired.

No, I haven't seen that. It is definitely on my radar now. I watched one about Myra Hindley (and Ian Brady) a few years ago. See No Evil: The Moors Murders, starring Maxine Peake. That was really good too.

I recently watched that Dragon's Dogma show on Netflix. I think the best way to describe it is as if someone took a run-of-the-mill early 90's JRPG and made a TV show out of it. The plot is barebones, the characters are shallow, dialogue ist stiff and unnatural – on the script side of things there's really nothing here worth mentioning. One thing I found annoying is how the show never explains some important aspects of its lore (what is a "pawn"?) yet it gives no less than three times an explanation as to why the protagonist goes hunting in the forest instead of fishing like the rest of the town.

 

The saving grace is its visual style because despite the fake anime style with 3D models it actually looks really good in motion and though over-the-top, the action scenes are nice as well. The occasional mix between 3D models and 2D character is a bit weird though. And in an effort to come across as mature there's an abundance of gore and a surprising amount of naked breasts, even though it's a very puerile show all things considered. I think the worst is how they shoehorned some human drama into every episode to go with the theme of the seven sins even if there was no build-up to it or even an explanation as to why they started acting like it. It all cumulates in a finale that renders everything that came before pointless, though I have to admit that the ending is actually the thing I liked most about this.

 

Overall not really recommended, though the short runtime and the fact that it's all done in seven episodes mean it's not that much of a timesink if you want to give it a shot. It's not particularly worth it though either.

 

Forgot to mention, but the intro sequence is really cool. Definitely the best thing that came out of this:

So apparently David Lynch is doing more TV stuff, this time with netflix. I'm actually surprised by this cause I kinda had figured that maybe TP3 would be the last thing he'd do.

It's called 'Wysteria' (like Wysteria Lane, Desperate Housewives), although that might not be the actual title. Mark Frost is not working on it so it's probably not more Twin Peaks. Anyway I hope it isn't, cause I think TP3 had a fine ending but was too broad and unwieldy to really sit back and try to interpret any of it.

 

It's strange how he's went from throwing a hatchet through a TV set in the opening of Fire Walk with Me to fully embracing this form for whatever reason. I guess streaming is a good place for finding funds from those a little less risk averse for weird bullshit. Personally I hope it's a little more restrained than The Return

I think with something like Netflix, it doesn't need to do huge numbers from the off, it can be something that just continuously ticks away. In 10 years time they'll still have a David Lynch series, Showtime/Sky aren't likely to be repeating The Return unless Lynch has just died 

 

Anyway, I hope it's good but I'll watch it and probably defend it regardless

Just going by looks I strongly preferred the fan-casting (i.e. Hugh Jackman and Kaitlyn Dever). Pascal seems like a nice guy and is a good actor but he doesn't look like an apocalypse survivor. Never seen Ramsey anywhere before, can't say anything about her.

 

They have both been in Game of Thrones though, so I guess their presumably good relationships with HBO people made this a quick and easy pick for the studio.

 

They're both the perfect choice.
