Crackdown 2

We're still waiting for the away team to report back on this one, but in the meantime Xbox.com reveals that Crackdown 2's multiplayer options include competitive support for up to 16 players and co-op for up to four.

Although the trailer shown during the Microsoft conference was a bit ambiguous (although very pretty), a subsequent press release claimed it would "take multiplayer gaming to unprecedented levels... providing you and your friends with the complete freedom to explore, destroy and play as you return to restore justice and peace to Pacific City".

That suggests structured multiplayer will be rather more of a big deal than before, although hopefully not to the exclusion of another single-player campaign. After all, we need to sort out that naughty Agency voiceover man.

I'm well up for some of this. Anyone with me?

I loved the last crackdown game it was amazing, the trailer shown of this made it look very nice and polished. The only thing I didnt like about the first one was the lack of a proper challenging enemy, it was pretty much you vs general mobsters and then a slighty tougher one that didnt put up an awful lot of resistance. The trailer seemed to show slightly tougher looking enemies with that monster thing coming out of the sewer, so should be good.

oh yes. the first one was great. i loved the orbs you could easily see on top of the buildings but then had to figgure out how to get them like some sort of giant 3d puzzle, hope there's more of that this time :)

i loved the first one, i just enjoyed pissing about, but co-op sucked on there coz it took forever to join or someone to join.

But 4 player co-op makes it even so much more awesome!

Crack the Crackdown egg down my throat - i want it more than Carla Gugino. Four player co-op was the one thing the last game really needed, as long as they down tamper to much with the winning formular we could have an amazing treat in store.

I must start the first one again. I played it for 10 mins not long after I got my 360, but had lots of other stuff to play so it got put to one side. Shame it can't be installed to the hard drive, too.

First Crackdown 2 info surfaces

US magazine Game Informer has exclusively revealed the first detail on Crackdown 2, Microsoft's Xbox 360 action sequel in development at Ruffian Games, a splinter of original studio Realtime Worlds.

The game will feature four-player co-op, an all-new 16-player competitive multiplayer mode, two enemy factions, underground areas, new abilities and weapons. IGN has the details.

The original's Pacific City is back, but dramatically changed by a viral outbreak that turns its citizens into bloodthirsty creatures, especially at night. The Agency has retreated to its high-tech tower once more, and a new underground group called the Cell, described as similar to a Mad Max gang, has sprung up. There will be underground areas, your influence on events will be evident across the city, and missions are said to be more varied.

You'll advance your character in the same five skills, but each will unlock new abilities: a dash attack for agility, a helicopter for driving, for example. New weapons include a UV shotgun that fires light and a magnetic grenade.

Competitive multiplayer will feature a new, more skilful aiming system (presumably minus the lock-on) and - according to CVG - a "Call of Duty 4-style progression system".

Crackdown 2 is due out next year.

Really can't wait for this. :)

Gotta love those orbs.

Does anyone else think its great how people seem to actually be doing stuff with sequels nowadays. These additions so far sound great, they could just have released a graphically tighter version of the last game and it would have sold well, but they seem to be doing a lot with it, which is great.

Bit more info:

Ruffian Games has revealed that the Pacific City of Crackdown 2 isn't just broader and more diverse than its predecessor, but towers over it as well.

"All I can say is that in the first game, the distance between the highest and the lowest point was under 400 metres. Now we are looking at over 1000 metres," lead designer Steve Iannetta told Eurogamer when asked about major geographical shifts, and in particular new underground areas.

"While we have kept the basic island structure, and to some extent the road network, we have really focused on creating a city that shows the consequences of its history, specifically the 10 years that passed from Crackdown 1 to Crackdown 2.

"Basically, the city's history became our style guild. We wanted to see evidence of every battle fought, every area that was abandoned, every wall erected to contain the virus, and every breech point where they failed."

Beyond that, Ruffian has sought to reflect elements that proved unexpectedly popular in the first game, bringing them closer to the heart of the game's design in the process.

"At a building by building level, we have rebuilt swathes of the city, this time with a focus on Orb hunting," Iannetta explained. "We now have many new much taller buildings. Even the Agency Tower has a few surprises in store."

Like many of us, Iannetta also felt that one of the best things about Crackdown was the toybox players were left with - and particularly the feats some players were able to perform with a little help from vehicles and the game's physics - so many of the new items in Crackdown 2 have been seeded with potential for experimentation.

"We did not know that you could do half the things we have seen," Iannetta acknowledged. "Someone driving the SUV to the top of the Agency tower to firework displays using light shades, exploiting a cheeky wee bug. We always wanted to turn the contrast button up on toys and interaction.

"That is where the Mag Grenades came from. They are quintessentially Crackdown. They offer a use, but [offer more] when you abuse them. We are hoping for some spectacular results!"
