spatular Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Hello. so does anyone play any 2d shooters? lets all talk about them because they are awesome some shmup news: Death smiles 2 has been announced at an arcade show in Japan, the original is coming out on the 360 later this year. it's by cave so it's awesome by default! Raiden fighters aces (collection of raiden fighters games, rf1/2/jet, already out in japan) should be coming out on the 360 in america. this - http://xona.com/dualityzf/ - is coming to the xbox live comunity thing at the end of next month for 400 points, i think it looks rubbish from the screenshots but the youtube clip looks pretty good. Big Bang Mini - out soon on the DS - seems interesting, sort of shooter controlled by the touch screen. http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/...g%20Bang%20Mini all the information above info is from the shmup forum, which is where i generally get any info about this sort of thing: http://shmups.system11.org/index.php WATCH OUT! WATCH OUT!
retroed Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Big Bang Mini - out soon on the DS - seems interesting, sort of shooter controlled by the touch screen.http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/...g%20Bang%20Mini I just ordered this from movietyme.com for £13.99. I went for the US version as it should have this box cover. From what I've read, it's US exclusive, Canada doesn't have it and we probably won't here either. NGamer gave it a very positive review in the latest issue, with an 83.
spatular Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 nice one, i was thinking of ordering from play, but that's much cheaper! there is a review up on eurogamer - 5/10 :? http://www.play.com/Games/DS/4-/6036670/-/...;searchsource=0 http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/big-bang-mini-review
Hendo Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 I used to play 'em all the time as a kid, hence my Wii filled up with loads of old shooters. I think I've said before that I'm much more a fan of the horizontal scrolling ones rather than vertical. I don't know why, but I'd guess it's to do with more field of vision on the horizontal scrollers. Have to admit, they've gone really niche and hardcore in the last few years (chicken and egg time, is that why they fell out of favour, or they went more niche because they fell out of favour?) which is no bad thing, but just not for me. I like the stuff like R-Type, Nemesis, Parodius, Salamander, etc. Other than R-Type Dimensions, is there anything to my taste coming soon, or out?
retroed Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 There's the R-Type game coming to XBLA. It's a remake of the first two games, and the first to feature co-op? spatular, HMV.com have Big Bang Mini for £14.99 if you want a UK copy. EDIT: Doh! I didn't realise the XBLA R-Type was called Dimensions. Ignore me.
Jay Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 You might like Thunderforce VI, Hendo. It's not the best shooter ever, but it's pretty good, it scrolls horizontally and feels like an old school shooter rather than a modern bullet hell hardcore fest. Did you like Gradius V?
spatular Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 ^ yeah, i agree with the above for more recent old school hori recomendations, gradius V on the ps2 is ace (gradius = nemesis iirc?), i've not played the new thunderforce (note you need to be able to play japanese ps2 games for that). i'd also recommend omega 5 on xbla, which i thought was pretty good. Death smiles is also a hori and really good and it doesn't get like the bullet hell games untill later on. RetroEd, thanks for the HMV link, went for movietyme, hope to get the fancy case too!
RivaOni Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Does Metal Slug 7 count, its out over here at the end of Feb, its been out for ages elsewhere hasn't it?
spatular Posted January 29, 2009 Author Posted January 29, 2009 Does Metal Slug 7 count i wouldn't count it, i'd call it a run and gun game or something, but it is technically a 2d shooter so if you want to count it that's cool i don't want to go down the road of trying to define what is and what isn't a shmup - that brings a whole world of pain! in other news dodonpachi DOJ for the 360 has apparently gone gold!
Hendo Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 You might like Thunderforce VI, Hendo. It's not the best shooter ever, but it's pretty good, it scrolls horizontally and feels like an old school shooter rather than a modern bullet hell hardcore fest. Did you like Gradius V? I had Thunderforce IV (and either II or III I can't remember) on the MD and loved it. Brilliant mind-blowing stuff at the time. Not tried Gradius V but I have the first and third on the VC. I've been tempted to get the Gradius Collection on the PSP as it might make me play the old girl, for one thing.
spatular Posted January 29, 2009 Author Posted January 29, 2009 gradius v is miles better than the other gradius games imo, but i don't really like the old gradius games so you tried omega 5, hendo?
Hendo Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Dabbled a little in the trial version, keep meaning to give it another go.
DANGERMAN Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Probably old news for Spatular Xbox 360 port of Cave's Lolita arcade shooter has finally gotten a release date. It is April 23. Hooray! As we previously posted, there's also a limited edition of the game (priced at Â¥9,240 — US$103) besides the regular edition. The limited edition version also includes a soundtrack CD as well. Amazon Japan is offering a special DeathSmiles arcade stick from Japanese peripheral maker Hori, priced at Â¥14,800 ($165). DeathSmiles 2 is expected to be revealed next month at the AOU arcade show in February. Kotaku I'm guessing this wont be region free, doesnt seem like any shooters are
retroed Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Big Bang Mini demo is up on the Nintendo Channel for us now, apparently.
retroed Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 R-Type Dimensions coming this wednesday, at 1200 MS points. And so, after years of work, R-Type Dimensions is nearing release. The package contains R-Type and R-Type II, both with completely reworked visuals. There is now an option for on-the-fly swapping between the original, classic 2D graphics and the all-new 3D look. Just hit a button and you can move back and forth from one look to the other without pausing the game -- a first for the Live Arcade.Tozai has also added a co-operative mode for two players that can be played locally or online. "It doesn't really make it any easier," says Ballow. The co-op mode is good for casual or first-time gamers because it makes the experience less overwhelming. R-Type is a classically hard game and the team hasn't changed that formula -- all of the enemy patterns remain intact -- though an infinite continue mode has been added for those who simply can't beat the game on limited credits. http://uk.xboxlive.ign.com/articles/950/950114p1.html
spatular Posted February 3, 2009 Author Posted February 3, 2009 ^ anyone getting r-type? i'll probably get, i've never owned a decent version of it so maybe i should give it a chance, it would have stood a lot better chance at 800 points though. Big Bang Mini demo is up on the Nintendo Channel for us now, apparently. and did anyone try this? (as i'd already ordered the full game i didn't bother) the death smiles release date is great news, much sooner than i expected, i've been checking play-asia nearly every day since it was announced, now i'm checking a few times a day shame it's reported as "Cave's Lolita arcade shooter" but i guess if that's what they need to do to sell games and stay in buisness then i don't really care. death smiles is the first shooter they've ported themselves in ages so it must have done well.
illdog Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 ^ anyone getting r-type? i'll probably get, i've never owned a decent version of it so maybe i should give it a chance, it would have stood a lot better chance at 800 points though. Agreed, 1200 is outrageous. I may still get it tho. Im woefully bad at shooters, Mr Spatular, what tips would you give me as a master of the schmup? Do you do the whole out of focus eyes thing or does it come natural to you. I dont seem to get much better at them.
spatular Posted February 3, 2009 Author Posted February 3, 2009 Mr Spatular, what tips would you give me as a master of the schmup? Do you do the whole out of focus eyes thing or does it come natural to you. I dont seem to get much better at them. oh man i'm not that good some basic tips though would be to watch some videoes from youtube or super-play.co.uk to get some ideas as there's usually a lot of memorisation involved in doing well, which is why i don't do that well, can't be bothered to memorise stuff, but the more you play you'll pick up a general idea of what to do when to stay alive/get points etc. regarding where to look on screen, there was a thread about it on the shmups forum but i failed miserably in finding it it depends a on what type of game your playing and how big the screen is, a small screen probably helps getting a good overview but isn't as good when you need to get through tiny gaps. also depending on what's happening on screen you might change what you look at - if you're not in any danger look to the top of the screen to see what the next threat is but if you're surrounded concentrate on your ship. also you need to know where the hit box is. the more you play a game you'll eventually learn which enemies cause problems and can try and get rid of them asap when they appear. also in bullet hell shooters you're supposed to do something called bullet hearding to get the enemy bullets to go where you want them to to make it easier for you - it's not simple and i don't really understand it and think it's more based on memorisation but i have a basic idea that i try to do - don't stay on the bottom of the screen and stay to one side, then as there's a gap in the bullets move across to the other side of the screen, maybe via the bottom of the screen as you can often make a gap by going down a bit but then when you get to the other side try to not be on the bottom again. the higher up the screen you can safely get the better as you have more room to retreat. for non-manic games, like r-type, i have no ideas :? also if you want tips on a specific game try the strategy section of the shmups forum, or even start a new thread with a specific question, they know their stuff on there. also there's this arcade event thing on which i'm thinking about going to: http://www.insertcoin-09.com/ July 18th-19th in Northampton it might not be anyone elses cup of tea but it sounds good to me!
Jimboxy Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 i keep playing the demo of triggerheart exelica on XBLA and really like it, just haven't plucked up to buying it. Would that be a good starting point?
spatular Posted February 4, 2009 Author Posted February 4, 2009 i keep playing the demo of triggerheart exelica on XBLA and really like it, just haven't plucked up to buying it. Would that be a good starting point? i like it, the capturing, spinning and throwing enemies thing is great fun. but i think easy mode is too easy (although maybe that would make it a good starting point?) and is normal too hard, and there's lots better manic shooters, but maybe not on the 360? (ikaruga is better but not a manic shooter really) a cave game or maybe armed police batrider on mame would be a better starting point imo i'd be interested to hear what other people think to triggerheart too as i think a few people here have it? illdog? swallow? and ben on the dc maybe?
