Craymen Edge Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 I'd like to be listening to part 2 of the MFG 2009 podcast, but I'm not listening to anything right now. Until the replacement screen I've ordered for my mp3 player arrives, I can't see what I'm selecting, and I'm stuck with just the "random album" button.
Hendo Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 I'm certainly getting the use out of Spotify now. Currently I've got a few tracks from the Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros album, "Up From Below" stuck in my head. I think the lead female singer is either on ultra-strong happy pills or just mental. Also, stumbled upon the album where that mysterious cover comes from: Animal Collective - "Merriweather Post Pavilion" The track that most leaps out so far is My Girls. I think I've posted that earlier in the thread actually. There's a good cover by the woman who sang on the "Young Folks" single by Peter, Bjorn and John. <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>Actually her album is really good too, Taken By Trees "East Of Eden".
DANGERMAN Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 Yeah I saw it on some list of the best album artwork of 09. It lost to muse, which is decent artwork but not as good as this imo. I'm not a massive fan of Animal Collective unfortunately, not enough to buy the album at any rate
Jimboxy Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 anyone else heard of Nouvelle Vague? I randomly read about them in a guardian acticle about music used in TV shows, had a listen on youtube and they're great. from wikipedia: Nouvelle Vague is a French musical collective led by musicians Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux. Their name is a play on words, meaning "new wave" in French. This refers simultaneously to their "Frenchness" and "artiness" (the '60s new wave of cult French cinema), the source of their songs (all covers of punk rock, post-punk, and New Wave songs), and their use of '60s bossa nova-style arrangements. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object><object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Hendo Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 I remember seeing that performance of Love Will Tear Us Apart on TV, Glastonbury I think. Some of those covers are genius, but some start to grate a bit.
Hendo Posted January 8, 2010 Posted January 8, 2010 Listening to "Ghosts" by Siobhan Donaghy, the first one to leave the good ship Sugababes. Good start to the album so far, first 3 tracks have got really good atmospheric feels to them. I know no-one else cares but I still want to see the original trio get together and kick mecha-Sugababes' arse. *EDIT* Well, I'm now on my 3rd listen through in a row and it's awesome! Can't believe this has been ignored by the world at large.
Hendo Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Triple post genius. I realise I'm most certainly on my own, but if you fancy opening yourself into the world of jazz, I would heartily recommend watching this documentary, only up until Sunday, I stumbled upon it tonight by accident. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00jf64y/1959_The_Year_that_Changed_Jazz/ It puts forward the theory that 1959 was the most important year in the history of jazz because 4 of the most influential albums came out that year, and I can certainly stand up for 3 of them, The Shape Of Jazz To Come, not so much. I'd seriously recommend Time Out by Dave Brubeck and Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis because they're probably the most approachable jazz albums.
stoobie Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 "Ghosts" by Siobhan Donaghy Well, I'm now on my 3rd listen through in a row and it's awesome! Can't believe this has been ignored by the world at large. Not by me - I have it too. A very un-sugababe-y album
Hendo Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Yeah I remembered you mentioning it a while ago and then I stumbled across her being mentioned in a BBC article and thought I'd give it a spin. It sounds like what the Sugababes would've sounded like if they went down the classier route than the slutty one.
Craymen Edge Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Currently listening to Uptime/Downtime by The Kleptones. Totally free, and well worth checking out if you like remixes/mash-ups. His stuff is really smart, and stays well away from the cliché territory you sometimes get with remixes. I'd also suggest checking out the albums "24 Hours" and "Yoshimi Battles the Hip-Hop Robots" too. Hendo Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Downloading them now, love me some Kleptones. I got the Yoshimi album, it's ace. Especially love the Public Enemy "By The Time I Get To Arizona" mash up with Martin Luther King "I Have A Dream" speech, makes your hairs stand on end. Last night I was watching Dolly Parton in concert at the O2 (on iPlayer, not actually there unfortunately). Her tits are still massive and she's still razor sharp. Gotta love the Parton.
Jimboxy Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 i love Dolly Parton, much to most peoples bewilderment. Will have to check out that iplayer concert. I was going to see her at NEC, but tickets were mega expensive.
stoobie Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Dolly Parton sends my kids books every month. Its true. She has a book club for kids and for some reason she chose Rotherham. We get two books a month and they are all signed(printed) Love Dolly!
Hendo Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Currently listening to Uptime/Downtime by The Kleptones. Cheers for this, Mike, currently my favourite albums. Some absolute genius tracks in there, he throws some mash-ups in that last about 5 seconds, whereas most people would mine those choices for a whole 5 minutes or so. Love the Busta mash-up with No Doubt and This Song Smells is so obvious it hurts. I don't know where the backing music from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Foo Fighters tracks come from, but they completely change the songs - it's like some amazing cover versions. I've found the Downtime album to be very inspiring.

Some album notes would have been really nice. There are a few tunes in there I'm not familiar with but really like, and it would be cool to check the originals out. EDIT: Found track notes on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uptime_/_Downtime

It's not 24 hours long obviously, so did he throw it together in 24 hours or something?
Cyberpunk Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 I'm currently listening to Rammstein's 'Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da'. In case you don't know, Rammstein are an industrial metal group from east Germany. What's different about this group is they've become quite famous in the Uk and the USA, dispite the fact that they don't translate most of their songs from the native German. Their most rememberable moment for those unfamilier with the group is they performed the opening scenes of the action no brainer flick xXx, with their song 'Freuer Frei' (Open Fire). Rammstein used to be scary. You know, back around the time Columbine happened and every German with a keyboard was considered a threat to national security? Well, those days are long over. The "Du Hast" boys are doing their best Turbonegro impression now, having just released "Pussy," a simple, silly song about the deed everyone loves. In case you miss the clever lyrics ("You have a pussy, I have a DICK-AH! So what's the problem? Let's do it quick!"), Rammstein have put together a video illustrating the song's message (read: wild, porno-style aardvarking in various pedestrian settings). If the bouncing meat bags and moist love patches don't get you, the exploding crotch missiles will. The Video to 'Pussy' is here Pussy Video This is the censored version. There is an uncensored version floating around. I'll leave you to find it if you're interested.
retroed Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 The video was on here, but the link takes you to another of their videos now it seems. Probably best not posted here anyway tbh. I was listening to a healthy dose of Biffy Clyro (Only Revolutions) and Leonard Cohen (I'm Your Man) today, in between podcasts.
Cyberpunk Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 The video was on here, but the link takes you to another of their videos now it seems. Probably best not posted here anyway tbh. Yeah mate. I made sure I linked to the censored version, and not put the vid on the site. I thought I covered my rear end that way.
Jimboxy Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 I've finally got to grips with spotify (its not hard to use, i'm an idiot) so I'm currently listening to pixies - death to the pixies, excellent stuff. I've also been using it in combination with music-map.com to find other bands i might like, working out pretty well so far.
