illdog Posted November 6, 2008 Share Posted November 6, 2008 First of all i deleted the other impressions thread of this cos it contained no impressions. Stop doing that. So, i scived off work for an hour to see if it was at home and...it was. Ive only played the training level and the first level set in the hospital and so far its exactly the same as the first one with a couple of new weapons and bits of paper on the floor your can pick up. But i think the game actually starts on level 2, as the cut scene was very dramatic and has now set the story. Looking forward to tonight immensely. The Ltd packaging is very nice, comes with a little book and a steel case containing the game and the Ltd disc. I forgot to mention a little thing that i liked, achievement non believers wont care, but every time you do something toward an achievement thats attainable over time a little progress bar pops up at the bottom left of the screen. Here i am sitting at the computer at 1:47am I havnt even thought about puttin gears in yet Gamestation had a massive queue, and i was like middle back Get to the front "We have no limited editions left, we only got sent 25" Even tho i pre ordered it in september and was 7th on the list. "you should get the standard" So i went fine and then i noticed one on the table, dimwits. I say, i get the splatterhead locust and the cog tags dont i? "No, you can only get that with the standard edition" - Like WTF, it was clearly advertise 2 months ago saying you get it with gears of war 2, whatever edition! They didnt even have the golden hammerburst codes - "We didnt get sent any, come back another day with your reciept" My friend bought the standard edition, even tho he was put down for limited edition, "sorry uve been put down for standard" Friend: I get the splatterhead and cogs dont i? "No, thats a splatterhead set, you have to pay for that (£50 or somewhat) EVERYTHING THEY HAVE SAID HAVNT GONE AGAINST WHAT WAS ADVERTISE 2 MONTHS BACK All seems shit to me, to be honest, i could of ordered it online and got it a day early n cheaper. Plus i had to drive like over 50 miles altogether. Theyve wasted my time Im not a happy bunny, and im off to play gears before i kill someone than a locust. EDIT: Only good thing is you can get a wireless adapter when bought with gears 2. But my friend got it with a LE, didnt say tht on the advertisement. WANKERS! And there was this hot girl with a lancer, but thats all! They better have that hammerburst code or i think i will blow my nut and im normally the calmest person u meet. I was very anti Internet shopping, because of all the peoples wages get cut out (people need jobs), but tbh the big chains have pissed on their chips just recently. Its like the original pumped up to 11. Just set piece after set piece. Seems a lot tougher than the first one as well. Haven't really done anything online, had a quick look. I remember the first gears being pretty tough, but they have ramped it up a notch this time round i think. I am playing on the hardest setting anyway... for some stupid reason... and am SERIOUSLY considering going back and doing it on normal first time around. The first level... the hostpital really is not a good start to the game in my opinion. It just feels like a new level for Gears one with a few new game mechanics. HOWEVER.... the reason they put it in i believe is so that you can get used to these game mechanics because right after this level the shit hits the fan in a way that you have never seen in a computer game. Its fucking EPIC! I'm not gonna say more on that front because most people don't need any persuasion to get this game and its the sort of stuff you want to come to with out any thing spoiled. Over all though the package is massively revamped. The new moves and weapons certainly feel nice and fresh and the swarm technology adds a new level to the scope of the game. All in all this is Gears of War bigger, badder and better than before. MULTIPLAYER Checked out some of the online modes last night too. Jumped into a horde mode with a mate and loved every minute of it. Horde mode is... in a nutshell.... infinate replay value to your game. Epic did not invent this though. Its something that Bungie used to do way back with their Marathon games. It basically puts you in an arena and throws wave after wave of enemies at you. You and up to four others have to survive for as long as possible. If you die you can restart from the last wave you failed. Its epic beyond all imagination!! The first few waves are totally 'meh' but very quickly stuff gets ramped right up. Enemy AI seems VASTLY improved in this version and they strategically lay down cover fire while others flank you. Its hard work and stupidly intense. Got my adrenaline really running..... i haven't yelled so much on xbox live for a long time! Calling for cover or to stick together.... You then have the traditional gears multiplayer... but this has seen a much needed facelift too. Before they had the usual lobby system... whereas now they have implemented a fantastic 'lobby' where you choose your gametypes, invite friends... and then matchmaking to get you all into the game. As you probably know i LOVE matchmaking so its instantly bonerific for me. A few moments were a bit clunky.... you sometimes hang in a menu or on a screen for a while but eventually stuff clicks into place and the game is afoot. I am sure this sort of stuff will be ironed out in a patch, but its nothing gamebreaking at all. There is a playlist that allows you to play the OLD gears maps... but new versions of them. You can download them with a free code you get with the game. Another playlist uses the NEW maps. They call these players choice. Basically everyone in the lobby gets to vote on what is played from a choice of two things. So.. for example.... it pops up a choice of gametypes.... you use the L and R triggers to cast your vote. It then moves onto the map. Its a great idea as it all moves along very fast (you only have ten seconds to make your choices) and it works better than the COD or HALO veto system which is becoming increasigly annoying.... (i.e. the map LOADS... people veto for the sake of it... and you have to wait for another map to load) Another great (controversial) inclusion... or exclusion... is the removal of the ability to quit a multiplayer game midgame. In order to leave you would have to quit the whole game and go back to dashboard. While some may moan that this is not a good idea... i personally got fed up with bad losers quitting in Gears 1 and ruining the game for everyone else. I also played wingman. This is a gametype that you REALLY do need to play with someone you know. Its basically five teams of two. Last team standing wins. Team with most points at the end of several rounds wins the match. Like all gears multiplayer its fucking hardcore. Already people seem stupidly good at it. It is good fun though, but really would suck to play with someone who can't communicate as if your wingman dies or runs off you are screwed. Not tried any of the others yet. My main goal is to get to grips with the singleplayer first before i take it online. Another FANTASTIC inclusion is the fact that your stats on and offline are linked. Kills in singleplayer count towards your seriously achievement just as they do in multi. This means that even if you are not a fan of online play you can still get as much out of the game.. and means that modes like HORDE have even more value. I also saw a training menu in there. This lets you practice various gametypes against bots!! Yep... Gears 2 has bots... yay... Again this is good for people that want the fun of multi but don't enjoy the pressure of online gaming WHICH in Gears of war is pretty heavy i have to admit. You can even set up your OWN bot match on any map with any settings.... its brilliant. All in all Gears 2 is an outstanding package. You really do get a tonne of value for your money here. There is so much more to do this time and everything is interconnected. Don't be surpriesed if this game doesn't leave your xbox for a while. I am now wishing i had gone for the collectors edition so i could unlock the gold lancer, but no doubt there will be a way to get it at a later date. Totally agree with the hospital level being a poor start, if they had started with Act 1 Chapter 2 it would immediately blow your socks off. More later when i have time. Its cool cos its social online play... but without the pressure of the VS modes. Anyway... i'm def online tonight and it supports up to five players in Horde.. It's exactly what I wanted so far, which is more of the same but more of it. Some might even go as far to say that it's bigger, badder and more bad ass. But not me. pickled pulled me, Oli, and PTG into a Horde play and it's brilliant! Met some interesting new creatures and blew their brains out. Some cool new weapons too. When you get killed you can take some photos so I did. Oli taking a hostage. pickled or PTG (can't remember which) fighting the good fight.
