Ninja Gaiden II

So I've been playing the PS3's Sigma version of this lately cos I love me some Ninja Gaiden. There's some subtle differences, for better and worse.

I dunno how many here played much of the 360 version but one difference I don't like is they've changed the way the weapons upgrade. You could just upgrade using the games currency in the 360 version and as long as you didn't blow all your cash on medicine and stuff then it could get to a point later on in the game you could fully upgrade your new weapon right away. Doing that doesn't make it any stronger, it just increases the amount of combos you can do, making the game more fun through experimenting. On Sigma II you can only upgrade once at certain shops, I'm maybe two thirds in the game and only have one fully upgraded weapon, I'd have nearly all of them done by this point on vanilla. So I don't like that.

The added sub-bosses are a bit pants, too. The ones in Hayabusa's campaign are just that statue boss from God of War 2, one is a giant traditional Japanese statue, the other is the Statue of Liberty. You beat both on a platform at chest height slashing at their fingers. There are also added missions where you control a number of female characters. I can't remember their names, but they are stilted clichés so it doesn't matter anyway. They are quite fun to use, though. I suppose they are just added weapons and combo sets, but the sets are different to what Hayabusa uses, and they have massive tits.

It's been easier so far too, except one odd design choice with a certain boss but I'm rambling so I'll leave it. But lots of awkward and frustrating bits have been removed or diluted. Where I am now (and the level before) there should be the infamous bomb shuriken dudes but I've yet to come across them, I wonder if they've been removed completely.

Playing the Black version which has just been released. Man I miss these types of games. It’s so much fun, it’s absolutely dripping in style and just the right amount of stupid. Can still tell it had a budget behind it as well which just doesn’t really happen with this type of game now.
I think I actually appreciate it more today than I did back when I played it originally. The combat is clicking so much more too. Don’t know if they’ve reduced the difficulty but I’m on normal, reached chapter 5 and not died yet. Unless spending hours in games like Sekiro have just turned me into an elite gamer.

Still got some issue - the camera is still fucking terrible and is the real big boss of this game. When you’re not in combat or wall running it really doesn’t feel good either. Even just lining up with a ladder is hard work at times.

Having a damn good time on this revisit though. Like I say, I think I like it even more these days since games like this are so rare. Helps I don’t remember anything too so it’s basically a new game.

Edit - nevermind what I put here.

As a self confessed what the kids are now calling a “gooner”

I know this has some pneumatic females in it but that's going a bit far don't you think?🤣

Edited

I’ve just googled it and I was very wrong! Fucking hell!!! That taught me for assuming. I thought it just meant you liked good looking women in games and whatnot.

Since I mentioned it earlier I looked up the state of the PC version and couldn’t find any conclusion. Some people say no stutter, some say little, some say a lot. Some say frame rate and performance is fine some say frame pacing is terrible, feels really choppy and performs poorly

Only thing I did find is once again (just like Still Wakes the Deep) the Gamepass version doesn’t have DLSS where as Steam version does

DF must have a video or podcast topic on this next week. I’ll wait for that but assuming that the bad word is true I’ll play on Xbox for simplicity

It looks like a similar amount to Sigma 2 which was disappointing when I played that.  I mostly remember ultimate technique-ing my way up that staircase and nimpo when I got knocked out of it in the original.

According to the digital foundry patreon, John (maf's mortal enemy) is making a video comparing all the different versions.

The guy who made that video has also made another vid where he reckons this remake is still the best version of NGII, even with the enemy number cutbacks. But I love how crazy that video is where there's legless ninjas climbing up the stairs and there's loads of heads rolling down and he's under so much pressure from all the bullshit, lol

Played around an hour of this earlier... wussed out and picked the easiest difficulty as I'm pretty bad at games like this.

It's been enjoyable enough so far in an old skool kinda way... although I will say the first level doesn't give a great impression with the nighttime skyscraper setting. As soon as you're dropped in level two things look lovely though.

Completed - that was an absolute fucking blast!! Had a great time with it. So satisfying and fun & some surprisingly great little set pieces. Faulted a bit towards the end with the old Japanese dev trick of having a boss rush to pad it out - thankfully something they’ve move way from these days. But otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed that.

I think the swimming controls are inverted by default, you can change it in the settings. That helped me a lot with the swimming sections.

Let me know how you get on with the clock tower platforming bit… oh boy! Utter shite!

It’s a great game though, honest 😃

I had to google how to do that swimming bit 😄

not that far in but quite enjoying it. How you do wall jumps and ladders is great. I’m pretty rubbish at it though so good there’s an easy mode.

The thing I remember about Ninja Gaiden is there’s like 3 attacks that are just OP. There’s the dash attack, the grab that throws them in to walls, and some kind of charge attack which takes forever but I think just kills any non-boss enemy in one go.

Also I use to use the Nimpo skill mainly because invulnerability and it would let me survive killing blows.

I haven’t played this game since the 360 and I only played it once. So swimming bits and fish I can’t recall at all. But I remember just spamming these attacks and it got me through the game

Think I'd better check those asap...

I got an 82 hit combo earlier just by using throwing stars on a single enemy... then the prick died 18 short of the achievement. 🤦‍♂️
