Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Hmmm, delicious copypasta.. :)

So, finally got time to write a few lines about this little bundle of awesome.

It's a comprehensive package, absolutely filled to bursting with STUFF of WIN and AMAZE. The main attraction is doubtless it's online mode, which from what I've seen is easy to use (well, as much as you'd expect from Nintendo's Friend Code system, anyway...), fast and incredibly fun. More thoughts on this after the weekend, when I plan to get properly stuck into it.

I've been hammering the single player mode though. Standard Arcade is great fun, the number of different difficulty settings and well-balanced (on the whole, this IS Smash Bros. we're talking about) character match-ups make for an enjoyable challenge for every player. The jewel in the crown of the single player though is Subspace Emissary mode, which combines platforming(!) and the traditional mega dust-ups and item collection. The story is suitably cheesy Koopa turns people into statues, oh noes! - but it's a great lark all in all. Event Mode is good too, in this characters are mostly pre-determined, and the number of events is massive. I've done about 15 so far, and I keep unlocking more. Add in the different difficulty levels again, and the search for every unlockable trophy and badge seems like it's going to be pretty much never-ending. Yes, they're incidental, but once you've started unlocking the F-Zero statues it's impossible to resist the compulsion to CATCH 'EM ALL!

Other embellishments, like the screenshot and video-capture features (not 100% down with how to videos yet though.. importing LOL) and list of Nintendo releases, TV spots for the games and much more all combine to make a unique game, self-revering perhaps, tongue-in-chek most definitely.

And that's all without even mentioning the fighting system! I'm using the Gamecube controller, out of choice, and I haven't given the remote controls a go yet as the GC pad works so brilliantly. The fighting system is layered, as you'd expect - there's a jump, attack, special and guard button and that's it. Special moves, performed with directions + A are also, in a stroke of absolute genius, mapped to the c-stick. Beginners can be pulling off moves with abandon, but subtlety and tactical depth are also to be found here. Guarding, dashing, ledge-grabs and more are all here to be mastered - these are essential against human opponents, and even the AI on higher difficulty settings. It's not a shallow button masher by any means - get four friends around the Wii though and that's likely to change.

But, of course, that's the beauty of Smash Bros. It's a game that maybe dismissed as inconsequential to those lacking a luLz bone, but don't bother telling that to me - I'm too busy FALCON PAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWNCHing Peach on the Rainbow Road...

Firstly, damn you. :(

Secondly, me and illdog tried using the 360 chat for playing our final on Mario Kart but it seems that whenever you're "away" (because you haven't touched the pad in a while) it signs you out of the chat.

Plus Skype is much better quality.

Thirdly, damn you. :(

I had a solid few hours online with this yesterday, was most excellent fun. Once you've entered your friends' Brawl code (I know, I know) you can see if they're currently fighting and if they have space for you, or invite them to your game. Very simple, and very fast connections on the whole - had a tiny bit of lag when I was playing with three Japanese people, but it was only minimal.

Playing randoms is where the Wii's service is different to Live etc. Randoms can't talk to you, and even if they disconnect the AI takes over. Good fun though, there's no wait for a game and you can even bet on other matches which you watch (!). The game doesn't keep any win/loss records which is a bit of a shame, but it's clear to see why Nintendo have taken this approach. Not being able to communicate with the online "idiot pool" is a bit of a relief for me, and much more welcoming to non-hardcore online gamers.

Devious tactics, well-timed taunts, a mad dash for a massive BANHAMMER - what more could you want from an online game?

I think that I will use skype for online communication of this, and considering that my next phone will likely have skype on it then it will just be a case of plugging my hands free kit in and swearing at you all as I kick ass.

Everyone download skype and sign up for free so that we can all do this.

I hope we can play cross-region, don't really feel the inclination to get the US release for a good while.

Oh, I forgot to say, there's time-limited trials of loads of Nintendo games on the disc - 5 minutes for Starfox 64, 1 min (!?) for Super Mario Bros. and about 12 others I've not tried. It's blatantly advertising for the VC and it's worked - hang me, but I've never played Starfox 64 before, but I'll be buying it tonight.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but well, this isn't looking good.

Remember stories about Japanese copies of the game conking out Wiis and Nintendo saying it was nothing to do with the game and was in fact due to dust and tobacco affecting the laser in the disc system? *cough*

Certain Wii consoles are unable to play Super Smash Bros. Brawl correctly, according to a website recently published by Nintendo.

"Super Smash Bros. Brawl utilizes a double-layer disc which has a large memory capacity," reads the website.

"A very small percentage of Wii consoles may have trouble consistently reading data off this large capacity disc if there is some contamination on the lens of the disc drive."

Nintendo advises that you return your console to the company for specialised cleaning. There is no cost for the cleaning service and it won't affect your saved game data, although there is a chance your virtual console games will be deleted for some reason.

The repair offer is only available for United States residents, so if you imported an American console and are experiencing problems with the game, you might as well throw the system into the rubbish bin now, as we're sure Brawl won't be the only game to use a dual-layer disc.

This makes me hesitant to import it as if it screws up the Wii, that's it.

Or just sell that copy of Brawl on ebay (or send it back if you can) and wait for the pal version. If that doesnt work then you can send your Wii back to Nintendo-Europe. EDIT: Just read that properly, yeah you might be boned if you have a US Wii (or just get it chipped and run the backup that apparently runs fine)

Fortunately I, nor anyone in my house smoke, however I am a filthy fucker. Hopefully the ps3 attracts all the dust away from the wii (npt that i hate the ps3, it just seems to really attract dust!)

Wow someone listens to the podcast  As I understand it there was a release date from CJ, but then they just seemed to let it slip (as in they missed it). The link ed posted did say the 14th for shipping, but for what it's worth the ebay seller i've ordered from (Smash & freeloader) had it down for the 10th/11th. They've still not shipped and unless ive got more money than i thought they havent charged me yet either despite me paying by paypal

It's aggravating knowing it's so close and it'll probably end up arriving next monday :(

So has everyone ordered a yank copy of smash bros then?

I haven't. I'm looking forward to Mario Kart more, and I have more than enough to keep me busy.

And I can't help but think that the Freeloader isn't going to last very long. I hope I'm wrong, though.

Yeah thats a fair point Ed, im looking forward to kart more as well, and if people off this site dont get brawl for a while then I wont bother either because there will be no one to play it against, Id hate to ruin the excitement of playing mario kart online by trying to fit it in with playing brawl online.

I've not.

I do want Smash Bros, but I'll wait to see how the freeloader and the online on this fares before ordering them.

If the online is shit, I might just wait for the EU release.
