New TV

I’d miss Dolby Vision in programmes and films but I’d rather have smooth motion. 
 

Fuck knows. I’m a couple of years away from buying a new TV. Never know, they might make some big strides in motion handling in that time.

I actually found out when I got mine... funnily enough it's almost three years to the day (24th May) I'll be happy to keep this as my main for a couple more years then look in to changing.

I got a new tv the other week to replace my 4k Hisense 45” which I got in 2016. Nothing mad wrong with it but it didn’t have HDR and I fancied an upgrade to get the most out of my XSX.

 

I went for Hisense 55U6KQTUK 55" Smart 4K Ultra HD HDR10+ with Amazon Alexa. It cost the same as my last one (£350) in a sale from Comet which is nice.

 

Funny thing is I thought my old one was 55” so when it turned up I was like well hello big boy. Pretty happy with it. Has all the apps built in like NOW, Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video etc that I’d normally have to have my Xbox on for.

 

Pretty happy with it and I must admit voice control is a search bar game changer. As is tradition my old tv has gone to my parents to have and theirs (my ex ex tv) to my brothers 😆

I've got to admit that I'm starting to get itchy feet again in regards changing mine... I need an unexpected money drop though. 😩

Me too, I know what I want to get, I just need it to drop in price a lot and hope that next year's model isn't a big step up 😅

money willing I'd swap out the one I bought when I moved in to this flat. It's fine, it's 4K and does HDR, has the various apps, but it runs laggier than the one I bought a couple of years earlier and doesn't do VRR. Not the end of the world because I don't play PS5 or PC games in the bedroom, it's largely just the handhelds in bed, but knowing I've never stopped being a bit disappointed with it

 

plus my sister was saying she could do with a tv, so she could have that one. But, I'm not rich enough to buy TVs for no reason, so she's out of luck

My main TV in the front room started playing up. It had a couple of days of showing stripes, like interlacing or scan lines over the picture, no matter what I was doing. Turned it off at the wall for a while so it rebooted, still the same problem. Apparently it means the board is failing so time to replace it

It's a 55" LG OLED. I've got to say, I liked my old TV a lot, but the screen on this is so much better. It's not so much that you can see the fine detail of textures, it's that I could see on Suicide Squad, which I just booted for the picture, the bits where it was shit. Things like blurry mushed trees and textures in the distance. And obviously it's really colourful 

 

The only downside is that it was more than I like spending on a TV, and that when I put the old one on last night the scan line problem had gone, who knows how long for, but I might have spent that money for no reason just when I need to rebuild a PC and was toying with a Switch 2

also snap! Got one of those last week (well a smaller one), seems good. My old tv is fine but wanted to upgrade to 120hz and vrr, been playing halo at 120, pretty smooth. Had to get a new cable for the pc, that’s doing 120hz stuff now too. HDMI switch was causing problems, not sure what the fix for that is. Not really sure oled is a good idea for me but the prices have been quite a bit better than the led tv’s I was looking at, dark mode enabled and taskbar hidden, hope it lasts!

😄 Yeah, definitely hide the taskbar, maybe F11 your browsers too (if that still works) to get rid of the search bar

Yeah I should have said the switch is supposed to work, rated for 4k 120, but doesn’t  seems like it’s a bit pot luck with those and the cables so I got some new cables for that too, not tried yet.

Tbh tho, I wouldn't recommend using the TV at all for stuff with static UI. Like if you're a fiend for youtube as an example, f11 may not save you there

yeah not sure it's a good idea but here we are i'm all in now it's going to be interesting to see how it copes. i usually have youtube on a second screen so that should be ok. i'm sure i'll end up with chrome burnt in too though.

 

edit - just put f11 on a spare trackball button so hopefully there's more chance i'll use it

So I finally ordered a new TV!

 

It was a 65” LG G4 but… the shop said they are sold out and they’ll send me a G5 instead by way of an apology 🤯😅

 

The only issue I have is that there seem to be some issues with the G5 looking grainy, but otherwise (as long as LG patch it), it’s an amazing win!

I wonder what the percentage of people is who like all that built-in smart TV nonsense. Screen settings, audio settings, input channels – what more do you really need?

LG's OS is annoying to me, sometimes I'll press a button on the remote by accident and have a blaring robot voice saying 'WE WANT TO RECOMMEND YOU CONTENT TO WATCH', like I'm a content robot waiting to consume. Hate that wiimote thing as well, when you move the remote and it changes from digital to motion control

I don't dislike the wiimote idea but I have also never actually used it for anything 
So, good point - now I think of it, it's annoying...

 

I don't think we use any of the 'smart' stuff. We do use a lot of internal apps, but that is because I get audio sync issues with a soundbar if I use Apple TV 4k - shame as I love that thing!

Turned all ai and advertising off on my settings. 

 

Also turned off remote mic, though that bloody thing is always listening.

I'm going to try to pick up the new Panasonic instead of an LG when it's dropped in price, it looks (from reviews) like it should be good!
