    Anthem

    Started this last night, have probably put around 6-7 hours into it so far. I'm not going to go into too much detail as folks have already put up detailed impressions of their time with the demos. But, yeah, seeing as my expectations for this were pretty much 0 and I'd not played any of the pre-release demos, alphas etc. I have been pleasantly surprised. The graphics are what I noticed first really, it looks absolutely phenomenal. The voice acting and motion capture for all the characters just feels so incredibly lavish as well, all the performances are amazing and the motion capture just looks and sounds like one of the most realistic I've ever experienced. The hub world is reminiscent of Destiny's Tower but it feels much more Biowarey than I expected it too, it feels like much more of a real, living, breathing place than the lobby-esque workmanlike aesthetic of the Tower. Throughout the first few missions more and more areas of the Fort are introduced to you and you discover new people and places to see like a lovely plaza and bar. What has surprised me the most about the base is probably the NPC conversations though, you have multiple people to speak to after pretty much every mission you finish and talking to these different people to get to know them is a real joy, it doesn't feel like some throwaway exposition dump like in Destiny and other GaaS shooters, you do feel these folks have personalities. The 'action' part of the game I just felt like I was playing an Iron Man game really, there's not really any other way I can describe it. It felt fucking amazing to jump of of the cliff face outside the fort and just engage the thrusters for the first time. Combat itself feels way better than I expected too, although it has been very easy so far with me dying once and my shield being depleted on only 1 other occasion, all the other missions I've played have been a breeze. I have had quite a few bugs. Textures popping in some places - one time I was flying around and a whole environment was pretty much white and then spawned in around me making me crash -the helmet of your character not appearing on the cutscene that plays just before you go on a mission, a weird one where the subtitle box from previous dialogue stays on the screen and won't go away. I've also had quite a struggle getting it to run smoothly on my PC - which is surprising - I had to lookup a guide to get the settings right earlier and have actually managed to get a mostly stable 60fps with few dropped frames - before I was getting as low as 30fps in firefights. I actually haven't had the game kick me out at all though which is surprising, the servers and matchmaking side of things has seemed uber stable so far apart from the long loading times to get into a mission. So yeah. I like it and I want to play more. Apparently after 10 missions there's some kind of Wall that you have to grind to get up, but I'm not there yet so just enjoying the journey so far. It definitely feels way more Bioware than I was expecting and way more distinct thanks to the flight aspect. Lots of pics:

    Generation Zero

    So, started this today... played for around five hours. Started with my customary female character (she's a bit of a munter)... I wanted a cheerleader but I guess they aren't too popular in 80s Sweden. Gameplay reminds me a lot of Dead Island (minus the melee combat)... the game seems to run well, it's X enhanced although I'm not sure how and doesn't feature HDR, the outside views are pretty nice. Unfortunately once you enter the buildings things are a lot more boring with lots of identical houses and such and that's after just a few hours. I read somewhere online that it was almost like Avalanche had made a Battle Royal map then changed there minds about the style of game, I can actually see that. So far the shooting and weaponry has been fine, nothing outstanding but I'm very early on and the game has the often used colour coded loot system going on so everything I found was pretty shit so far. Combat against anything more than about two enemies is almost guaranteed suicide, I think the game wants me to avoid combat but I'm rubbish at that kind of gameplay. The game has drop in drop out co-op, someone joined my game and it seems you're free to go and do what you like... I was never tethered to them in anyway. Towards the end of my session I hit a place where I repeatedly got owned and wasted a fuck load of resources so I've decided to restart the game again at some point. I've bought way too many games over the last few months and need to really focus on finishing up some... this will go in to a queue unfortunately.

    Crackdown 3

    I don't know what the reviews are on about, I'm having a great time. What it is is essentially more Crackdown. Do you like Crackdown? You'll like this. Do you not like Crackdown? You wont like this. It's honestly that simple. I've played about two hours maybe, im just wondering arond the map doing the things that pop up. Breaking out imprisoned citizens here, blowing up a malitia car depot there and all the while powering up Terry Crews. The more powerfull your agent, the more fun you have. You learn more moves, you do more damage, you jump higher, boost further - life is good. Best part is that it's free for Game Pass subscribers and for £7.99 it's worth getting on board. More Crackdown! Yayer!

    Overwatch

    cheers for the games Duck! it's early days, and a bit all over the place, but i quite like what i've played of this so far. i worry i'll get annoyed with the aiming in the long run. needs more auto aim imo.
  5. Put just over an hour into this. First things first, it’s way more traditional narrative focused than the last From action RPGs. Loads of cut scenes and it defaults to Japanese voices but I switched it to English because evidently I’m some kind of monster. If I can switch it back, I’ll give it a try. Combat feels superficially similar to Souls but really very different. It’s all about parrying and timing, whereas a lot of Souls you can cheese quite easily. I can’t imagine anyone’s ultra sensitive about spoilers from an hour in, but just to be sure: So far it feels great to play, very smooth and satisfying when you pull the combat off properly.
  6. About time for some impressions, I think. So its a 2D fighting game made by ArcSystem Works, a studio famous for its 'Anime' fighting games. They usually have a lot of systems and movement options as well as combo systems that can be extended to let players do some crazy stuff as long as they have the execution to do them, which is usually quite hard to do. They have made it simpler here. The first thing is its very easy to 'get in' in DBF since you have a button that activates the 'Dragon Dash' which has you fly across the screen and home into your opponent, and it also goes through most projectiles so for beginners fighting each other having that is useful for swiftly getting in. But it is very punishable, so learning when to use it properly is an early lesson. It has a few mechanics to aid beginners because I'm sure they recognise that this is a Dragon Ball game and a number of people playing it won't necessarily be into fighting games, they'll just be fans of the show so letting them have a good time is a priority here. One of the other ways they do this is by having auto-combos (performed by repeatedly pressing the light attack (LA) or medium attack (MA) for a more powerful variant that ends in a metre costing super). They're not a thing I'm fond of as they won't teach you the game that well but they do make for some cool looking action. The auto-combos, in fact, are totally unique combos. In a lot of other games, they are the same visually as manual combos but do less damage. And since they are unique here its a shame to see them locked into the auto-combos and not be able to do them manually. For example, Frieza, a character I use has a really cool looking move in the first part of his auto-combo which launched them into the air. So what I sometimes do to mix things up is perform the first half of the A-C then go into a manual one when in the air. But I wish I had the option to do this move anytime. But while there is a very flashy and basic fighter there is a high skill ceiling here as well, which you will discover at the time of writing when you go online. It isn't as high as ArcSystem's other games but there is still quirky stuff. Since this is a 3v3 fighter you can call in a member of your team to do a one-off move and jump out again. Using these can give you the ability to get hits in and continue combos where you couldn't without. Or they can be used to cover approaches, help defend etc. There is also the little mechanic also found in ArcSytem's other games; the jump cancel. Its something I've always known about but I've not really put serious time into learning but if you want to get beyond hammering out basic stuff you gotta get used to it. Essentially any medium attack can be jump cancelled. A common thing to do would be crouching MA (which puts them in the air a little), standing MA (pops them up a little more) then hit up while the animation is still happening to quickly meet them in the air. Since you can only use your proper launchers and Dragon Dash once per combo link it frees you up to use them later in the combo and its the mastery of this that really frees up the fighting system as a whole. It's here where it really gets fun. I've not really played the story yet but I hope to get round to it soon (it's kinda bonkers it's about the Dragon Ball gang being controlled by an entity and they turn to the camera when referencing this entity) and it also has this weird turn-based map system between fights. There's other stuff. Sparking Blast and how the online seems to be kinda borked at the moment in that the games run fine until it kicks you out of the lobby for no reason, but this will do for now.

    World War Z

    Ok, so I wasn’t expecting a lot from this. The movie was a pale imitation of the excellent book. I’d seen almost nothing about this til it was nearly out. Having not heard of the developer,I googled them to see their track record. The absolutely awful Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn was on the list,so I didn’t have a lot of faith in this game. But I’ve just played through the first 3 missions (or Episode 1), and it’s actually fun. The “Left 4 Dead But 3rd person” call is bang on the money,as that’s exactly what this is. From the weapons,to the “here’s a supply drop point”, to the Medkits (hold down on the dpad to heal,either yourself or a mate”. Even down to the “special” zombies (puker,leaper,tank). It literally is a L4D clone. That’s no bad thing, of course. As L4D was bloody awesome, and thanks to Valve not being arsed about making games anymore (Artifact doesn’t count, as that’s practically done for), it’s the closest we will ever get. Still, it’s not just a mere clone. It adds the pyramid swarms that appeared in the film. Throws in automated defences (turrets/mines/barb wire) for tense horde moments. And it also adds perks/customisations to your weapons. You level up your class through gameplay, i’ve gone for medic,as support is how I roll. By ranking up, you gain access to better perks (heal faster, heal everyone with 1 med kit etc). By killing enemies with specific weapons, you rank that type up, gaining access to better weapons which you buy with money acquired from finishing missions. There’s 4 player co-op,obviously. And a VS online mode, which I haven’t tried yet. It has issues. Apparently some people are having their save file wiped on PS4. The game completely crashed on mission 2,to the point I had to switch my PS4 off at the plug due to it hard-locking,which sucks. And it’s allegedly a bit of a pain to party up with friends online,but I haven’t done that yet, and a private server patch is coming soon allegedly. Still,for what it is,it’s fun. If you enjoyed L4D at all, it’s fair to say you’ll like this.

    Dangerous Driving

    So, the downsides are there. It’s locked to 30fps on base machines (though I can’t actually tell the difference), there’s one music track on the menu when you boot it up and then you need a premium Spotify account to play and control music through the menus. There’s no online or offline multiplayer at the moment. There isn’t even a tutorial of any kind, you’re just thrown straight in expecting you to be a Burnout fan. But it’s fast, fun and completely mind blowing that this was made by just 7 people. I’ve hooked up my Spotify and am currently hurtling round the tracks listening to a Prodigy playlist. I can tell you that bouncing round to No Good, Voodoo People and Break & Enter is fantastic. It’s a shame that there’s no specific music and if you’re using another premium music service you’re out of luck. Also the music doesn’t get filtered like it did on Burnout when you boost. But if no-one else will make it, Burnout fans should embrace this as the good outways the bad. Also, I’m gonna make a collaborative playlist if anyone wants in.
  9. I have very mixed feelings about this. I love the feeling of adventure, of not knowing what's down the road and if you'll be able survive. It's brilliant when you do overcome the odds and press on after a tough battle. The combat system is great with loads of customisation on offer, you're even encouraged to change class altogether. The Pawn system works really well, being able to hire and fire helpers and changing the composition of your group entirely as the situation demands. Despite all the good bits, the game so far has felt as though i'm playing the middle portion of an RPG where i'm clearing up fluff quests just to pad out the leveling process. There's been no gravitas or urgency to the quests so it's difficult to differentiate between the story and side quests. Things like not having fast travel I can understand why they left out even though it's annoying to have to walk to the same places over and over. I'm surprised more games don't use the MMO style flight paths to get around. You still get to where you're going quicker but you have to travel to a specific place, rather than just magically teleporting everywhere. It's a happy medium between the two. There's other things which are pretty minor and affect my enjoyment more than they probably should. For instance, why did they overlook mini-map markers for people who have something to say? It's incredibly frustrating having to run around looking for colored speech bubbles above NPCs heads. Likewise with the Pawns. As good as the system is it grates when in combat and you're unable to issue commands for something as simple as a weapon buff - the option just doesn't exist. Most of the time you just have to wait for them to apply the correct buff which is very frustrating against the larger enemies. For all it's issues, there are times when this incredible game shines through, and that's what makes it worth playing. I just wish it was more consistent.

Way back in January 2013 this game raised £1.5 million on kickstarter, was released in 2015, followed by a Horizons "season pass" which looks like it is receiving its final major update this year. I bought the base game at some stage during the last two years and have finally gotten around to playing it. I've played it for over four hours so far. The game has a number of tutorial missions (and videos) which explain some of the fundamentals of the game, piloting and landing your ship, combat, travelling between planets. There's certainly a learning curve but I think I have the basic piloting, landing and navigation parts down now. I can't really speak for combat, I completed the basic combat tutorial but I haven't yet encountered any combat in the main "open" game, which I've played around 90 minutes of. You start off with a ship, 1000 credits and a mission to deliver data to another port. I completed that mission and you are then told which places to visit if you wish to learn about various aspects of the game. Each port has a mission board where you can take on a variety of missions, but you can't take on missions of a higher rank than your current rank. I'm still at the starting rank "Penniless". So far I've completed one extra mission, to supply copper. I haven't even scratched the surface of the surface of the game but just playing this most basic part of the game has been fun so far. I've been playing on PC, with a controller. Aesthetically, the game looks and sounds beautiful. The hyper space jumps or whatever they are called are amazingly eerie.
  11. The controls are really weird, I keep pressing the Touchpad for map and calling my horse with the wrong D-Pad button (thanks AC Odyssey). The gunplay doesn’t feel like it’s evolved since the OG RDR. It’s so incredibly clunky having to click in and out of cover and move up to the next position, felt like the analog stick was stuck in treacle. I’ve only had a few gunfights but every one has been a chore so far because of it, you just feel like just staying in one cover position so you don’t have to keep moving. I really didn’t think I’d be saying this but the R* game it most reminds me of is LA Noire. Early on there’s a cabin you have to search and I was just going around hugging walls and inspecting/picking up objects like LA Noire, you can do this with almost every richly detailed interior too. The quality of the writing, cinematics and atmosphere created though is truly phenomenal. The opening feels like you’re in and the attention to detail of the world and environmental design is astounding. I’ve been overwhelmed already with everything there is to do, I sat down and played Dominos at the camp for 40 minutes last night. I haven’t even discovered a lot of the side activities either, it has all been so bewildering that I haven’t quite got a handle on it. I’ve been a little disappointed with the ‘talk to strangers’ thing too as a lot of people in the only town I’ve been in have only had the ‘Greet, Antagonise, pull weapon’ commands which don’t really seem nuanced. I have had a couple of cool stranger interactions outside of the town though. Overall though, it’s just intoxicating and I can’t wait to dive back in and properly get used to my surroundings and all the different systems at play. The gunplay is easily my biggest grievance and if I don’t get used to it or it improves I feel it’s going to massively drag the game down in terms of enjoyment for me.

    The Surge

    Looks like there's no thread for this, then? Continuing my random bite-size gaming journey, I started this earlier. I love a lot about it. I love the style and world they've built - instead of dragons, knights and demons, this is a Souls clone with mechs, basically. There's some cool twists on the Souls formula, like you can target specific body parts. This has some element of strategy to it - you could go for an un-armoured head or leg for a quicker death, but if you target an armoured part and do a finishing move, there's a chance of cutting that body part off and putting it on you. That guy has a cool headpiece? Target it and swipe it off. I played a couple of hours before it crashed and nearly beat the first boss, but he did have some fucked up attack patterns. I made some good progress before that but nearly got stuck on a mini-boss that killed me in one hit, with a drone by him an an extra tough enemy hiding behind him. My Souls experience has taught me that I shouldn't be there yet, so I eventually found the proper way forward. Apparently it loses its appeal after a few hours but I've enjoyed the time I've put into it and it cost me nowt.

    DOOM

    Doom! Doom is back! ROAR etc. And after a 5.02 gig update I got to play it too. After a pleasingly short intro you're straight in to the action because stories are for girls. The movement is super slick, old school Doom style, you really ping about like you are wearing buttery shoes or cum-laden socks. Certain enemies dont hang about either. You start off with a pistol but soon pick up a Shotgun. You can shoot enemies to death or.. shoot them till they stager, then they glow orange and blue and this is your prompt to melee them to death in what's called a 'Glory Kill'. The benefit of this is that it makes health pop out of the dying bad guys body. If in real life you stabbed someone in the head and cake popped out would you do it? I've added an Assault Rifle, Plasma Gun and a Chainsaw to my arsenal since. The actual weapons can be upgraded from these little floating robots you see here and there, for example my shotgun can be charged by holding the L trigger, then upon firing with R it spits out powerful explosive rounds (that then need a small cooling off period before re-use). Each weapon actually seems to have two upgrades each, Ive so far also upgraded my Assault Rifle to spit out a volley of missiles which is cool and a second shotgun one that lets you fire rounds in quick succession. You can swich between uprgades with Up on the D-Pad. The chainsaw is a little different. So far it has three fuel cells. The bigger the enemy, the more fuel cells it will take to kill. The plus of using your chainsaw is that it will cause enemies it kills to spill ammo, super handy if your running low so using it it becomes tacticle. Also, the fuel cells have to be refilled by little gas containers that seem to be scarce so far, this obviously stops you using it all the time as it's a one hit kill machine so they had to nerf it or the game would be a piece of piss. It's a really good idea and well used. The levels are fairly decent in size, i have only done the first three but the third level was pretty big. The story is there, it's just introduced slowly and in bits instead of a big lump at the beginning. You bump in to a couple of people along the way, i wont spoil the story incase your interested in discovering it yourself but there's hsit going on, giving you purpose I suppose, if it's needed. I had to use the map to find my way a couple of times as the in-game pointers send you in a specific direction but there are two or three levels of depth sometimes and there is no up or down indicator. This isn't a problem, just saying. The doors make the same sounds as in the original too, i liked that. You need red, blue and yellow keys too which is a nice touch and you pick up green armour in both bits and in whole, like a floating chestplate, just like back in the day. What else. You upgrade your armour, like you can make yourself less vunerable to environmental hazards like exploding barrels and you can give yourself a spidey sense to detect secret areas (of which there are apparently tons but I think i've only found one). There are also in game missions that reward you with upgrade tokens, like kill two enemies with one shotgun blast or melee kill x number of enemies in a certain way. You also get rewards for killing a certain amount of enemies which I just narrowly missed on the third level. It's kinda tough. I'm playing on Hurt Me Plenty (normal) and I've died a few times. The enemies are furious and when they are in number it can be a battle to survive. This is a good thing, makes you play cautiously, backing off where you can, going for glory kills to top up your health, hopping you've saved a chainsaw use to earn some extra ammo. Finally, not far in to the game, scenery wise it reminded me of Metroid. Sandy scenery as far as the eye could see and a desolate lonely feeling. And later, when I was battling hordes of enemies with a similar backdrop I got to thinging how cool a Metroid game with these controls could be. But that's just a deam. Anyways, I wont get to play this again untill Saturday but then I was gonna have a go on the multiplayer and report back. Enjoying this so far.

    Warframe

    So, Wanting to take a break from Destiny, I've had a go at playing Warframe on the PS4, and I have to say that so far, I've really enjoyed it. It's a 3rd person shooter, that feels part wat between halo and Mass effect. There's a (ludicrously expensive) paid currency if you want to go down that path, but everything is obtainable for free, you just have to wait for it. Has anyone else played this?

    Prey (2017)

    It's a bit like deus ex/dishonoured but less stealth and more scary. i really like those games so i really like this game. it's also less level based as you can explore the whole space station. you can get powers to turn into a cup, although i didn't really use them. and i say it's scary but its maybe more that the music is scary, it put the fear of god into me and i had to keep taking short breaks to calm down, had some less intense music been playing i think i could have halved my completion time of around 33 hours. oh and you can do stealth but i didn't so not sure how viable it is, but it didn't seem as viable as in deus ex/dishonoured. you get upgrade points that you can spend on special powers/more health and stuff. some of the powers seem cool but i didn't really use them, i went for hacking/repair/heavy lifting stuff to open up more areas. some of the enemies can turn into in-game objects, like a book or projector, which can be quite freaky. the crafting/materials system is nicely implemented, didn't spend much time messing about in the inventory. the gloo gun is pretty cool, freezes enemies and can be used to aid platforming, although the platforming controls are a bit hit and miss. my basic tactic was to gloo gun stuff then shotgun it in the face - i was playing on easy mind so that might not be as effective on higher difficulties. the story is really good and intriguing, although the end was a little disapointing. lots of interesting side missions too. and the game makes you think about your choices, some side missions i didn't do because i was concerned about the consequenses. i played it on pc, my pc is old (2500k) but with a modern-ish graphics card (970) and the performance was great, looks really nice and ran really smooth, except for 1 room, where even on medium it was a little choppy. so yeah i liked it

  18. Well, this is officially out now, I got my code from CD Keys around 7:30pm yesterday. Pre-loaded straight away after that on GOG Galaxy (28gb install), and after I'd watched this week's Game of Thrones I fired her up, played the first hour or so (headphones ran out of juice otherwise I would've played more) can't really give any thorough impressions just yet but the combat still seems a bit shithouse to me (never liked it in The Witcher 2) and the graphics look pretty incredible (despite the downgrade) in almost fully-Ultra settings on PC. Just within that opening hour I've found myself wandering away from the main quest, exploring little villages and cubby holes so it bodes well for the rest of the game, shall give it a proper run-through later today.

    Sea of Thieves

    So I can finally share my thoughts on this as the Closed Beta isn't under NDA. First I'll go through the mechanics. There's 3 game modes, solo, duo and 4-man ships you can choose at the start, all have matchmaking and put you into a group of randoms - assuming you have no friends available to invite. At first it was quite overwhelming getting used to the controls at what everything does. You've got a Wheel on the Left Bumper which brings up all the equipment and consumables - Wooden Planks, Bananas, Cannonballs, Bucket, Jug of Ale, Musical instruments, Spade etc. They pretty much do what you expect, planks are used to patch up holes on the ship when you get attacked or run aground, bananas heal you if you get attacked by a shark or skeleton, cannonballs load into the cannons on the top desk, buckets are used to get rid of excess water should you get holes in your ship, the Jug of Ale can be drunk and then refilled numerous times until the screen goes mental and you start being sick over everyone, the Musical Instruments are used to play sea shanty's and the Spade is used for digging up treasure chests. You also have a load of weapons mapped to Y, a Musket, a Sniper Rifle - only available in beta - and a sword. And a map/riddle wheel mapped to RB. The weapons all have a good heft to them, the Musket is slow to reload but you really feel it when it fires, likewise with the sniper rifle - which has a cracked scope, and the sword is just a general sword really, similar to Skyrim in its swing speed/weight if I had to compare it. Whenever you select a mission you get either a map or a number of maps/riddles that you have to solve to tick off all the objectives in that particular mission. Maps are all in-game, they never put a marker on your map or anything, what you do is look at the shape of the islands on the map and then make your way down to the huge world map on the ship and identify it like this. With Riddles they'll usually say the exact name of the island you have to go to, you find this on the map, go there and when you explore the island you'll get more specific clues as to the exact location of the treasure like 'when the sky is at its darkest, look south south-east and walk 7 paces to find what you're after'. It's all really well done and puts an emphasis on you having to do stuff yourself and work things out with your shipmates, no hand holding at all. Aboard the boat you've got different elements you can interact with. You can set the sail length and adjust them with the wind so that you get your destination that much quicker, helm the ship, walk up to the bird's nest and keep a lookout for obstacles ahead, drop/raise anchor, look at the huge world map down below, pick up items, store loot, vote on new missions in the captain's quarters and throw someone in the brig or make them walk the plank if you so choose. The gameplay loop - which has been adjusted for the better in the Beta - is essentially this: You spawn on the ship, identify a nearby outpost using the ship map, travel to the outpost and pick up a mission from a dude that's in a tent. Once you've got this you'll get a paper map or riddle in your inventory which'll let you know the shape/structure of the island or give you the name and you'll have to identify this island from the ship map and sail there. Once you get to the island you'll usually have to deal with a few skeletons or sharks. You'll then find the chest you're after - the darker they are in colour the more Gold you'll get for them - along with a few bonus chests that can be scattered about. You all have to lug these chests back to the ship, then sail back to the outpost and sell the chests to the merchant to get gold. As you cash in more and more chests more lucrative missions with higher gold/chests available open up, there is some kind of ranking system in there too as I had the option to buy a badge that would enable me to take on a next tier of missions I wouldn't of otherwise been able to. So you select another mission at the merchant and back on your way you go travelling the seas. The game has a lot of charm to it. The shanty's are all really cool and it really sets the scene when you're travelling the seas and someone breaks out the hurdy-gurdy, accordion or banjo thing. Being able to get absolutely rat-arse drunk onboard and all the shenanigans that revolve around it, like being sick all over everyone is really cool as well. The way that it doesn't hold your hand at all really immerses you in the world, you can put markers down on the big ship map but that's about it, obviously that means folks will get lost much easier but I think it'll be more rewarding and you'll learn more about the game and what you need to do by the way you have to figure out how things work for yourself, I assume there will be a tutorial mission in the main game that'll teach you the basics before you set off, but I didn't see this personally. Another element that I encountered in the Beta but not the Alpha was being able to hunt down other players. We actually only did this once - sunk this guys ship and then killed him - but he had no loot and respawned right afterwards so there doesn't seem to be a big penalty if you do get killed. As for my own thoughts on the game. I was really quite disappointed with it during the Alpha, I had so many matches where randoms with no mic would just pull up to a random outpost then run around getting drunk for 30 minutes like a headless chicken that I just gave up on it after awhile, I did have some really nice missions where we managed to solve 3/4 riddles and get a whole ton of loot but my overwhelming impression of the Alpha was that of frustration. But the Beta has been much better, after finding that frustration come back initially I found a really good group who all had Mic's after half an hour. We pretty much stuck together the whole rest of the session and were coordinating on missions, finding islands, setting sail lengths, digging up loot, knowing when to drop anchor and getting a shit ton of gold at the merchant that it was quite an addictive loop and I could definitely feel myself wanting to play more. I only discovered the Xbox App's LFG feature when I logged off as well, which will be incredibly handy for folks like me in the full game. It is just such a jolly, charming ton of fun. I've done a complete 180 on it, I now really think Rare could be onto something here. The thrill of seeing other real players in their ships on the horizon was exhilarating too.     Fallout 4

    Sam wants meaningful feedback so I'll try and give some here. It certainly is a follow up to Fallout 3 in that it is still that at it's core. You have a big, dilapidated open world for you to rummage through, explore and have your own little story. It's that stuff again. But the introduction to this game makes it difficult to like. Your character and equipment just aren't up to snuff when you start off. I died a ridiculous amount on my first proper task, and even when I found a craftier way of completing the mission unforeseen things would happen and I'd have to go again. I just felt like the game was slapping my hand every time I tried something which didn't happen nearly as much in Fallout 3. I also got attacked by a high level glowing Ghoul when I was minding my own business just after I'd talked to a merchant and was killed instantly... while on the main road just outside the starting area. They have improved the shooting but it seems at the moment that V.A.T.S isn't as good so I'm unsure how to play it now. In F3 since the shooting was so shit I only ever used it as cover fire while V.A.T.S charged up then I'd go for a full attack but that doesn't seem to work as well here. During the mission mentioned previously I feel like it wanted me to go full CoD since enemies were lobbing grenades and molotovs like confetti and I just couldn't do anything about it. I just ran off. Maybe it gets better as more unlocks become available but I don't remember being this frustrated during the intro of the previous Fallout games. They had their issues but not like this. It feels really slap dash and unconsidered. But I think the game looks fine. It's the least of my worries.
  21. Soon going to be playing through the 3rd (and probably final) DLC for this. So seems a good time to throw down an opinion. This is definitely one of the most fun games i’ve played this year. I’ve a lot of respect for Rebellion,their Sniper Elite series is consistently brilliant (shooting Nazis in the nads? Who doesn’t love that.). So I was definitely interested in this. It doesn’t carry across the gory X-Ray cam feature of Sniper Elite. But that’s understandable,as it’s going for a different vibe. It plays out like an Olden days Adventure movie, with a Narrator providing a running commentary,often genuinely being hilarious (though for some reason has an absolute hatred of cats,and isn’t afraid to show it). The combat is simple to grasp,with a small selection of weapons (sniper rifles,SMGs,shotguns), with additional extra powerful weapons that you can buy from crates,using gold you get from treasure chests and killing enemies. You also get special moves that you can activate with enough charge,ranging from damage reduction,to smart bombs. One complaint though has to come with boss fights. Many of them require an accurate shot on a particular weak spot, often a quite small one. Doesn’t sound bad in theory. But when that boss is constantly moving,accuracy proves difficult. Add that to a swarm of enemies ganking you,and the difficulty in getting a decent shot gets even worse. Co-op definitely helps in that regard. Bosses that took me a good 20 minutes to kill on my own,became a breeze when I was with a mate. Its been a really enjoyable game,and the DLC missions have been quite decent. Charging £6 for each additional new character can go bollocks though. It hit the PSN sales at Halloween,and probably will do so again before long. I’d certainly recommend it.

    NieR: Automata

    Nier Automata isn't quite what I was expecting. The demo, which is the prologue of the game, makes it seem like a fairly standard Platinum Games game. A tight linear action game with Witch Time when you dodge. Instead its that combat dumped in to an rpg And I don't just mean it's got a levelling up system, I mean it feels like a modern Final Fantasy game (or what I imagine they feel like because I I've only ever watched them being played). It's got big desolate spaces, using real world locations, all destroyed beyond recognition, in place of standard jrpg locations. Levelling up is a bit odd. Generally it just means a touch more health and damage, you don't get new skills. The way to do that is to increase the amount of 'chips' you can power. Chips are either dropped or bought and can do minor had things like show how close you are to levelling up, or increase your health, let you fire projectiles from your attacks, and auto heal, these have various levels themselves, meaning if you get a good one it might have a bonus health boost when triggered etc I really like the desolate look, I really like the robots, some bits can look a little simplistic but it's a cool aesthetic The only thing I'm not keen on is the amount of trudging around the map you have to do for side quests. The world isn't massive but it's big enough that returning to the desert is a bit tedious. Aside from that I'm liking its oddness

    Metro Exodus

    Couldnt see a post for this, feel free to delete if there is one. So, this is my first Metro game and the first thing I will say is that the story/setting is so immersive that its made me want to go through the other ones. As a game its not the most polished although its really good, solid 7 out of 10, theres just a few little things here and there and it sort of reminds me of Elder scrolls Oblivion at points which is a weird comparison but its what it reminds me of, its just got a bit of a clunkyness to it. The load times are absolutely ridiculous at times, 2 minutes to load up the game. The first time it happened I genuinely thought my PS4 had just given up but apparently its standard. It would be interesting to see what people who have played the series think of this one, mainly @DANGERMAN because I seem to remember him being a long time fan. I get the impression that its a massive departure from the series traditional feel, and I dont know if they decided to just do something different because they wanted to make a kind of open world game. The reason I say that is because it definitely feels like an early PS4/late PS3 game in terms of its open world approach, it gives me some slight Half Life 3 vibes.
  24. I fancied some retro stuff today, and maybe even putting proper time in to something. I was toying with playing something on the Saturn or Dreamcast but instead I booted up the Mega Drive collection on Steam. The nice thing about the PC version, which has had a bit of an odd history, is that it has mod support. Sometimes that means things like playing as Knuckles in Sonic 1, sometimes it means whenever anyone dies in Streets of Rage 2 it makes the Tim Allen noise, and other times people have just added other games to the collection through the rom option. I played som Hyperstone Heist, some Maximum Carnage (a Spiderman game), Batman & Robin. What I learnt was that this is cool, people have added all sorts of stuff, but also I'm not as good at these games anymore, nor do I have the patience for them Instead I played some Landstalker. I really liked Landstalker when I was younger, I was probably a bit too young and inexperienced to make the most of it though. It's kind of Sega's Zelda (it's actually made by Climax Entertainment, who made the excellent Dark Saviour for the Saturn), but with some isometric platforming and a bizarre take on how to move in isometric games (there's a mod to change it to more traditional controls, as default it's all about diagonals) I'm not far enough in to say definitively if it still holds up, but certainly it's not terrible. The biggest problem is when you encounter enemies, if you're by a wall your attack wont come out as the sword will hit the wall. Lining up to enemies is a bit fiddly thanks to the odd controls, I almost wish it was slightly more grid like movement, so you moved a set distance with each step, it'd make lining up against enemies and things to interact with a lot easier. Aside from that it had the adventure game thing of never quite being A-B, you aren't just moving in a straight line, even in dungeons you'll have to work to find keys or to activate something. I'm hoping it doesn't get too obtuse, but I'm hoping I keep chipping away at it, I don't go back to properly old games and finish them as often as I'd like
