  1. I was a massive PAD player (Puzze & Dragons). To be honest the game is not well balanced and lower level monsters did not scale so their was really no strategy. Also PAD was harsh due to poorly written algorithms. While I love the RPG/Match Three games I was not happy with that product anymore, so over the weekend I tried three some what new-ish RPG/Match Three games - Tower of Saviors, Pac-Man Monsters and Puzzle Troopers. Pac-Man Monster is new to the app store and is a well made game, but had no strategy you just draw lines thats it. It also not match three as you can tap one red dot and your red monster will attack. Just lame. Puzzle Troopers from Gumi is straight pay to play. It almost religiously badgers you to buy in game currency. Also lame. So I moved on to the last one Tower of Saviors from a Hong Kong based studio. The game is highly polished offering Vanillaware quality artwork and soundtrack. Gameplay is far superior to PAD and better written. While they do offer you gems to buy it really not needed as Mad Head (the developers) are very generous with give you one to two gems a day. I have two solid teams (one with high ranking cards and another mid-ish ranking cards) and I'm more than willing to fork over cash to extend my card slots due to the overall generosity and business practices of Mad Head. Also, a nice touch of detail the backgrounds of the cards move if you move your tablet/phone left to right. <iframe width="640" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/iebbEzJEuqA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
  2. So I downloaded Deadman's Cross today. It's free-2-play, so it did not cost me a dime to give it a whirl. I was not sure what to expect it looked like a FPS, but with a CCG element to it. It from Square Enix and was developed by folks who worked on Final Fantasy franchise and Guardian Cross, so the art direction and menus are very nicely done. The music is also nicely done. Gameplay wise it is not a FPS like I initially though, but a dungeon crawler RPG (Think Etrian Odyssey) with lite CCG, visual novel and Silent Scope styled shooting. The shooting and RPG elements are tight, but the CCG part of the game auto plays for you. You have really no control of the card fight. It would be nice the CCG part of the game was a lane battle and you had more control over everything. So far it pretty solid game and have not found any abusive paywalls, but I'm still early on in the game. If I find abusive paywalls I rant about it here.
  3. Tomahawk Rob

    Rage

Couldn't see an existing first impressions thread for this, so thought I may as well copy across my post from NowLoading... I got the 360 version of this from LoveFilm yesterday, despite knowing pretty much zero about it, other than it's an id software FPS set in a post apocalyptic world and (going by the odd comment I'd picked up here & there) it supposedly looks fucking amazing... So after installing all three discs to the harddrive, I spent 2 or 3 hours with it, just to see what it is actually like. Yep, it does indeed look nice! Well the scenery / landscapey stuff does anyway (I'm not sure the same can be said about the NPC models. So far they haven't exactly been the most varied or imaginative NPCs.)... In glorious 1080p I swear you can pick out the individual grains of sand in some areas! However, despite installing the game there is still a bit of obvious delay with the textures, and really, there are only so many shades of post-apocalyptical brown that you can call pleasing to look at. The first hour or so of gameplay was not what I'd call "fun". Gifted with just a pistol and a bunch of "wingsticks" (bladed boomerangs), I was tasked with completing more than just a couple of annoying "fetch" quests before the game decided I was worthy of playing and spread its metaphorical legs wider. Since then, it's got a bit more interesting, but I'm still having trouble shaking that nagging feeling that this has all been done better elsewhere... I'm planning on giving it some more time before the weekend, so we'll see if things improve...
  4. so it's like the last one, arcade racer with loads of sega characters. it's good - nice handling, varied and mostly fun single player events - time trials, boost events, drift events, dodging traffic and flying through loops are my favorites. the tracks are mostly ace, really bright and exciting, there's a few boring bits mind, they've got ones based on samba de amigo, jet set radio, golden axe, skies of arcadia. did some time trialling on the billy hatcher track, didn't beat the expert ghost but it was really good fun, i'm still crap at the last corner, and i managed to fall through the floor a few times. didn't like all the event types, the elimination ones are a bit boring because of lack of weapons, but that's good for the races so i won't complain too much. don't like the online but that's probably just me, i don't like most racing games with weapons, and prefer the non-racing events in single player. each race has 3 difficulty levels (giving you 1/2/3 stars) that also determine the speed like 50/100/150cc in mario kart. playing on normal it's pretty hard starting out, but as i've played more i'm finding it easier, maybe something to do with leveling your car up - although i'm not sure that has a big effect - just lets you tune it to your preferred style a bit (better speed/boost/handling etc). in campaign mode you need the stars to unlock new events and characters - seems you can unlock a good amount just playing on easy, but you'll need to play on medium or above to unlock have it on rental and was going to pick it up when it gets cheaper but it's only ~£25 from asda so i might just buy it... see from the chart thread other people have been playing - what think you?

    Boson X

I've been playing this a lot the last couple of days so I'm talking about it. It's another endless runner for your phone (or PC, if you want) but this one is actually pretty interesting and a lot of fun. You are a scientist who decided to fire himself down the Hadron Collider and use himself to find the Boson Particle. It's a really cool and dumb premise but it makes for a high speed runner with an abstract style which mostly looks pretty good. I think the only thing I don't like is the running animation which continues the dorky running tradition also used by Temple Run, which I believe was started by that guy in Syphon Filter. But he (or she, you can pick a she in the options) is a scientist so a dorky run is more understandable. But a part from the premise which appealed to me, there is another thing: Boson X must of been paying attention to Super Hexagon because there are some similarities in the design which make it more fun that your average 3D runner. Like Super Hexagon it is random but there is also a pattern to the parts of the run so it's a case of learning and knowing how to react to these random 'phases', for lack of a better word. It's also similar in how it sets out its goals. In Boson X you have to try and run on blue paths that increase a percentage, and also your speed, and getting to 100% makes the level change colour and your speed dramatically increases; then it's just a case of surviving... it's essentially the same as what happens in SH after you cross 60 seconds. When you hit 100% you unlock the next level but there is that leaderboard making you want to keep going on earlier levels. It's a cool game... not as cool as Super Hexagon, but it's a fine effort. It's not quite as tight as that or as inventive with its challenge but not many games of that ilk are. It's free on PC so it's certainly worth a look for a few minutes to see what you think. I also think it's easily worth the £1.50 on iOS/Android. And it has none of that grinding, coin collecting, perk management and microtransaction bollocks of most runners. It's a nice game.

    Kairo

Started playing this last night. Kairo is an adventure/puzzle game that was developed by Richard Perrin. Kairo does have a narrative, but the game leaves it up to the gamer to figure out what that might be by exploing the world and solving the puzzles. It's leaves you confused and I kind of like it that way. I'm starting to get the sense of what I think narrative might be, but I'm still not 100% sure. The world is that Kairo is based in is a kind of heavenly, sterile, peaceful and slighty creepy world. Kairo is not a horror game, but the fact that you are the only living thing in the game along with musical score and sound effects gives it a creepy vibe. Kairo's world reminds me a lot of the world that El Shaddai was set in and Hueco Mundo from the anime Bleach. On a technical level Kairo is far from flawless. While I love the world and the confusion the game leaves me in the game does have issues. While I can't speak for the Windows, iOS, android or Mac version of the game. The Linux version suffers from massive screen tearing. The first person controls are also on the losey-goosey side of things. There is a slider in the option menu that lets you adjust the camera, but it does not seem to make a difference, unless the slider is all the way to the left - then the camera does not move. I have not finished the game yet, but from what I've played so far I would recommend this to adventure and puzzle fans. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/IBkoyCeKwIU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

    Joe Danger

so i got this to play while watching the GP, it's pretty good, looks like it might play like trials but really doesn't, there's lots more (and occasionally confusing) controls, and it's all about doing tricks and combos and collecting stuff, rather than just keeping your bike from crashing. each track has various objectives to win stars, such as finding hidden stars, collecting all the small stars, landing on all the targets, doing something in a time limit, comboing the whole level (not quite as hard as it sounds as wheeleing is easy and keeps the combo going, but still will require some heavy memorisation later on) etc. there are checkpoints which help for some of the objectives and for learning the tracks but will be usless for others where you'll just need to start again (like keeping the combo), and there's multiple routes on some levels, where you have to press up/down on the stick/dpad at specific lane change points. despite my moaning the controls are reasonably sensible its just you have to do a lot at the same time: L2/R2 - back/forwards L1/R1 - tricks x - boost square - duck/jump up/down - change lanes right/left - lean/spin forwards/backwards one race i was having trouble winning because while doing tricks and wheeleing as much as possible to get boosts to stay ahead and jumping over obstacles i'd keep forgetting which button was accelerate (i'd be pressing right on the dpad or x when i should be pressing r2) it's great fun boosting while wheeleing into a jump then spinning and doing tricks to charge the next boost while collecting stars and landing on a target then boosting off to the next ramp, but the stomp and spike obstacles have been annoying, especially the things that crush you just after a lane change where its hard to adjust your speed, and some targets it doesn't show you too well with the camera angle. so i've been quite enjoying it but i'm not completely sold yet, i need to get better at the controls. this was quite hyped - did anyone else get it?
  9. Bought Leviathan Warship today on Steam. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Ab9e764D7cI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> The game is a really solid strategy game. Going in the only reference I had was the "jazzy" trailers, so I thought It would be a watered down arcade/casual style strategy game, but Leviathan is a deep game. Surprising for a game that is also on tablets. Leviathan is divided into two phases - Planning and Outcomes. Planning phase is where you give movement and targeting orders to your ships. When you're done with the planning phase you hit the "commit" button and you switch to outcome phase which you sit back and watch the results of your orders. Two types of weapons - Autofire and Manual. Autofire can be used as manual or set to autofire. Manual weapons are more advance weaponry like the Rocket Turret and can only be fired with manual input. Your ships can be damaged. Bridge Damage - Ship will have a reduced field of vision Out of Control - You have no control over that ships heading. It will go where it wants too. Engine Damage - You lose the ability to move your ship. It's basically stuck in the water. High Armor Piercing will do double damage on Low Armor Low Armor Piercing will do less damage on High Armor Low Armor Piercing will do regular damage on Low Armor High Armor Piercing will do regular damage on High Armor That is just barely scratching the surface. Like I said the game is pretty deep, but easy to pick-up. Reminds me a lot of Steel Horizon on the DS in that way. The in-game music is not jazzy like the trailer, but Paradox is releasing free "Jazz Boatman" DLC in the near future. That DLC pack will have in-game commentary by Jazz Boatman with smooth jazz music in-game. On the subject of DLC. Non-mandatory DLC like new ships packs for MP cost cash - around $4 and the MP map pack I think was around $2 and change. All mandatory DLC looks to be free. Highly recommend this game for strategy buffs. If any of you do get this game look me up on Steam for some ship your pants navel combat.

    10000000

I would just put this in the mobile thread but there's a PC version and I think a few of us might end up playing it. on paper it sounds like Puzzle Quest, it's an rpg based around match-3, where what you match dictates your actions. So if you want to attack you need to match 3 swords or 3 wands, if you need to unlock something you need to match 3 keys (or more). Unlike Puzzle Quest you don't have health, instead you're progressing along the top of the screen, the quicker you beat an enemy or unlock a door the longer you get to play. If you take too long or take damage you get knocked back to the edge of the screen which means ending your run. You need to collect wood and stone to repair rooms back in your home screen, these rooms are where the stat increases are kept, which means you get better, which means you last longer. You need gold to buy stuff, sometimes experience, and eventually you can upgrade the rooms (worth it for the first skills room you open because you'll max that stuff out pretty quick. I've probably explained it pretty badly, but it's Game Dev Story addictive. I think it's about £2 on phones, but there's no in-app purchase bullshit, it's just about doing repeated runs, and harder runs once you've met the bonus requirements
  11. I had a quick look to see if there was a thread on this already and couldn't see one. I can understand why, as there's very little to the game itself, but t really deserves on, because that premise is fantastically simple but fiendishly difficult. You rotate an arrow while walls come into the centre and try to carve a path between the gaps for as long as you can, in the meantime the screen pulses and rotates trying to throw you off your stroke. It really is one of those zen games where you start watching yourself play and wonder how the fuck you just did it. Here's my best time in the short time I've spent with it. Those squares really fuck my shit up!
  12. To the best of my knowledge this is only on iOS, both phone and pad but I'd imagine it's a bit fiddly on the phone screen. It's free for this month from IGN, I don't think you need an account just click the link to get it - http://uk.ign.com/prime/promo/walkingdead-free Irritatingly, I bought it last month and only put an hour or so into it. Early impressions are that it's a very good kind of RTS, follows the books more than the Telltale games did and seems quite grindy in order to level up your characters and get stronger. Download it and give it a try so my purchase wasn't in vain.
  13. EA Games has dropped free 2 play Real Racing 3 on iOS and Android devices yeasterday. It is properly fun racing sim and would recommed it to anyone who is into racing titles. You need a good WiFi connection for the download though. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/nRZ9S9UmEgk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
  14. I bought it today! it's excellent, very short and ends all of a sudden... but its great. looks fantastic and plays really well, although there's not really anything more than shooting and dodging. about 12 stages which can be completed in about 10 minutes, so its really one for the SHMUP/high score people I'm loving it, but i think if you didn't know what you were in for you may come away dissapointed
  15. Pikman

    Plague Inc.

Has anyone tried this? Pretty cool little game, resource planning etc to start with as you tweak a disease to obliterate humanity, then as you start to win, it gets rather depressing really! Great game though
  16. http://youtu.be/mVTuTopxkZc I've been playing this for a few days and I've honestly enjoyed it more than the "proper" games. It's the same set-up, same art-style but the gameplay has been simplified to work on just pokes and prods. There's no virtual d-pad or buttons - you press the screen to duck, release to jump. Swipe down or up on conveyor belts to change lanes, swipe in the air to do tricks, etc. There's less emphasis on scores and tricks than on the other games, though that is there too, but it's more about going through the (very short) levels and collecting everything and doing a perfect run. I'm somewhere near the end and the levels are finally getting pretty tricky, and there are a lot of them. Currently costs 2 quid and has IAP to unlock other characters quicker but with no grinding at all I've managed to get some characters that give you some decent coin bonuses.
  17. I believe this is a series that has run for years in America on PC, got a new version on current consoles a year or two ago. This is the new freemium game. You can play direct on Facebook on your PC (Mac, etc) or on phone or tablet via the app. http://youtu.be/RGbm2AAxEDs You can spam friends to get them in your games (it doesn't really run in real-time with friends, you just see their answers and score along with yours) but I don't like doing that. I tried to get a couple of friends interested but so far I'm just playing with strangers. It's very funny and well worth a go. Games cost 200 coins a time or you can play once a day for free so I'm mostly just doing that, playing once a day with the other half helping, until I get enough coins that I can play again.
  18. I thought I'd start a thread for this rather than leave it in the app thread as a lot of us played the first game. And if you did then you'll know what's going on as Anomaly Korea kind of feels like a map pack for Warzone Earth. I'm trying to think if there's anything new in it, there's a power now that boosts your attack power, I think that's new, and flame damage is a thing now (complete with a flamethrower vehicle that I think was in the first game). They do have more directed missions, so there's one where certain zones restrict what powers you can use, and one where you have to get to 3 information towers before they're destroyed, it does get to the point quicker than the first game did. It's also way shorter than the first game, unless there was a difference between the pc version and the mobile version anyway, as the PC version had a chunk of levels, then opened up another area giving you more. Anomaly Korea is just Korea, and only 12 missions (unless they add more). You do unlock 'Art of War' missions though that are supposed to be ultra hard (haven't tried them yet) That all being said it's still really good, for those that didn't play the first game it's a "tower offence" game, so rather than place towers to stop incoming waves you command vehicles to take out enemy towers. You can choose the route, choose which vehicles to use, upgrade them, and add more. There's powers like healing, distractions, smokescreens, and increased damage that you place on the field and while you're in their radius you get that effect. It's still really good, but Warzone Earth felt like the biggest bargain in the world, it was huge and brilliant, this feels like something they got out quick to capitalise on that. I don't really begrudge them, and it's still worth playing, and will take you a few hours to complete so it's not short either, only compared to the first game
  19. It's an indie RPG that goes back to the days of pen and paper games with people playing together, role-playing and using their imagination. Here's the website link that shows what it does - http://beholdstudios.com.br/knights-of-pen-paper/ worth watching the video to get an idea. You customise everything to your specs so you create the quests yourself, more or less. It's brilliant so far, well worth the £1.50 I paid for it. It's currently on Android and iOS and is meant to be coming to computers, unsure if that's just as a web game or a downloadable.
  20. Its one of those point and click adventure games for your personal computer and it looks a little like this. It looks exactly like that, pretty ain't it. I know very little about this sort of think but it is different in the way its story is told, there is no dialogue are even words in this game, its all told with short animated scenes, crunches and bleeps from the characters and enviromental stuff, it all tells the tale perfectly, it almost makes me want to stop using language myself. The puzzles, I don't know how to guage these. You have logical puzzles like moving shapes and all that Layton type stuff and you also have your classic inventory item stuff too, this is where I get stuck. At the moment the last thing I managed to get hold of is a dead/stunned robot cat... I know a dude needs some sunflower oil... WTF is all my console raised brain can manage. I was doing okay at it actually, the game starts out as a single puzzle per screen, you solve it and then moved on. I liked that. Later it does open up and all the inventory items build up with a series of characters that want different items and the little robot man shakes his head at everything I try the items on then I go running back to Halo. In all seriousness though it is a good game and one I hope to see to the end, I think I will because it does have a hint system which is pretty much an ingame Gamefaqs, I won't use it too much though....
  21. got a free copy of anomaly warzone earth on xbox the other week, never would have bought it, but turns out it's great, like a backwards tower defence game, you pick your path and tank types/formation, you get money to buy upgrades/new tanks, and you control a little dude who can pickup abilities from fallen enemies, it can get quite tactical picking your path/tank formation/power usage, and frantic when things kick off. there's some enemies that do stuff you wouldn't expect later on that keep it interesting. single player story is quite short but there's quite a few extra missions and 3 difficulties for everything. i found easy difficulty to be well judged for me. so yeah really enjoyed it.
