  1. For simulating a real environment, both in town and country, it's definitely RDR2. At times it really does look like a real filmed western. Unfortunately it plays a bit like that too. For artistic effort I'd mention Ori, but have always held that Okami has a certain something that pleases my eye like no other game.

    Far Cry 6

Interesting. I really liked the game so I'll tune in for that.
  3. I have 3 'long' games open at the mo, this, Oblivion, and a monumental playthru on Skyrim Anniversary that's touching 100 hours with hardly a nod at the main quest. Since I'm planning a Witcher 3 replay when the upgrade comes in I've chosen this to tide me over. Fucking hell tho, after the exuberance of far cry 6 it took a few hours to slow down to the pace of RDR2. It's almost like running into an invisible brick wall🧱. Bang. I've tuned in now, and I'm happy (sort of). The game is still a pain in the arse to actually play, rife with self importance, and made by people who hate gamers. That aside, yeah, I can live in this western for a couple more weeks. I'm at 36%, and have just met an Italian mobster in Saint Denis. I hope I get to kill the prick. Feasible, since I'm killing just about everyone else! I wonder how @Maf got on. In his last post he said he still hasn't finished. Although the later part of that post suggests he did. Maybe I'm misreading it. Maybe I'll get to kill him!

    Far Cry 6

Beat this last night and really enjoyed my time under the Carribbean sun. There was so much to do, and I did so much that the endgame was actually a bit of a pushover. I think the sub bosses were a little bit more memorable in the last one. I still think about that crazy drug kiss-blowing siren from 5. In 6 they were all a bit clichéd, the 'Mengele' doctor type and so on. Also I think this played a bit differently from the others in that close quarters stealth was a bit daunting. For silent kills I went with a bow for the most part, but even then the enemy would run for the alarm at the merest hint of trouble, and then all hell would break loose. Bottlers! Can't fault Esposito. He really is a class act, and even a facsimile of him can bring the scares. I thought the ending was a bit off though, unless there's a 'good' ending that I didn't unlock. But I don't go looking for stuff like that. I prefer to take the game as it comes and roll with the punches. All in all an excellent and eminently replayable adventure.
  5. Played a hell of a lot of cartoony platformers like ratchet, spyro etc when my kids were little. These days I dabble occasionally but always end up having a good time. I think the ori games are my favourite in 2d - just about the right amount of challenge for my clumsy fingers. But my favourite 3d platformer is also one of the games I hold as being responsible for making me a gamer. A true masterpiece, Prince of Persia, the Sands of time.

    Far Cry 6

There's a levelling system in this but I'm not sure how it actually works. I don't know if getting a new level just gives you access to better gear in stashes and treasure, or if you actually get stronger and more durable like a normal RPG. I'm thinking it might actually be both. I'm tearing around like a tazmanian devil at the mo, and I have a rifle (from a multi level 'Yaran story' that's so powerful it's making me feel a bit sorry for Gus's white suits. I also have a one headshot killing bow and have ditched my bloodthirsty cockerel amigo for a supernatural black panther who can make enemies dissolve into mystical flames. Cool. Although I wasn't really expecting magic in a far cry game. I've also chanced upon what I'm assuming is a piece of DLC. Was invited to an underground bunker and told I wouldn't be able to leave until the story was concluded. I had a feeling I was getting into a survival horror set up, and backed out with a close previous save. Looks good but I wasn't sure I was ready to commit to that just now. I love it.
  7. I'm going with Alan Wake, Dead Space 2 and Resident Evil 4 as favourites. Not that I have much to compare those titles with as it's not a big genre for me. I really have to be in the mood, and since gaming is more about unwinding at the end of the day for me, the stress of playing those games keeps them at bay for the most part.

    Far Cry 6

Finally managed to park my Skyrim playthru (after about 90 hours) and make a long planned start on this, although my plans have all turned to shite because of Skyrim as I was meant to be playing the remaster of Alan Wake around Halloween. Still, there you go. Anyway, I couldn't get into this for the longest time. My stealth approach didn't seem to be working, and I could hardly take a few hits before the game over screen beckoned. The game felt off to me, and I considered throwing in the towel. A little persistence paid off though. A couple of upgrades later and I'm bringing the pain to Gus's regime like a pro. I've also nabbed an insane fighting Cockerel as my number one amigo and stories of our bloodthirsty exploits are now filling the Caribbean airwaves. Yes, I'm now enjoying the island and it's many treasures and secrets. It's like a little digital holiday in the sun, only with a higher body count than when I was in the Costa Brava a couple of weeks ago. Slightly.
  9. Hope it's not as bad to look at as xenoblade 3. I was constantly losing my character in the fray and ended up just giving it a miss. Switch really needs to be overhauled now.
  10. I believe I'll be able to put your mind at ease on that score.
  11. This is me. I can hardly to to think of a game that clicked with me that I haven't replayed. My favourite genre, Western RPGs, lend themselves to that second or third run, especially when you can (as is mostly the case these days) choose different specialities for your character. I'm on my fourth run at Skyrim right now. I also like the relaxed feel of that second or third run. Having beaten the game previously I tend to take things slowly, exploring more and looking for content missed the first time. Consequently, later playthrus can become lengthy affairs and more memorable because of it.
  12. I've never got used to the idea that, in online games, other people are trying to hit/shoot/beat me. Why don't they just let me win. Bastards. I did get reasonably good at 2 online games, Splatoon and Mario kart 8, and notched up a fair few wins. I did find it was hard to go back after a couple of months off. It was like my paltry skills had been left behind by the community. I have this mad idea that I'm going to play sf6 for years and become a killer. You can all help this ambition by allowing me to beat you if there are any forum tourneys. Thanks in advance!
  13. I've been watching a lot of stuff. Looks great to me although players seem to be landing similar combos to 5. I think I heard one high level player (might have been Chris G) saying it felt a bit too much like 5 for his tastes. But I didn't get an invite to the beta which, given I've been playing 5 for 2 weeks and have absolutely no online presence, is a mystery to me😟
  14. In good time I've got my PS4 back and I'm making good headway on the basics. I've cleared the first 15 trials for Ken (out of 60 I'm guessing) and have beaten SF, sf2 and sf3 in arcade on hard which was no mean feat I can tell you. I'm getting reasonably clean in my execution even under the pressure of a sumbitch 8 level CPU final boss. And I know it's meaningless to judge myself by these battles but there's no denying the fun I'm having putting my chops together - even the wrong way. Gonna see October out with Ken then choose another character (from the sf6 roster) each month until the new game comes out, probably juri next.

    Skyrim

God knows how many hours I've done on this, now. Fucker has crazy content, and you always seem to run into a new quest just by opening your big mouth, even to someone as seemingly innocuous as a shopkeeper or a beggar. I did plan to start far cry 6 this month but there's so many open threads here in Skyrim that it feels rather unheroic to just up and leave to go sunning myself in some Caribbean dictatorship. It's funny, because I have this memory of getting this game when it first came out and not being that impressed - possibly because it felt different from Oblivion and I was a bit set in my ways. And yet here I am many hours into my 4th build, and reluctant to put it down. For me Skyrim has become a rather comforting digital holiday that I indulge in every few years to remind myself just how a holiday should really feel!

    Dead Space remake

I think RE 4 is hard work nowadays. This, on the other hand, felt as good as any modern game I've played when I did 1 and 2 last year. The sound design was off the charts. I suppose it depends on the scale of your appreciation of the original whether you think this remake was necessary. For me this game has a certain feel to it that could easily be lost in an ultra modern overhaul. @mmmark looks forward to playing a classic game with prettier graphics. That's good enough for me. Why shouldn't a company make money on their IP when there's a market for it. For this game tho, for me, I'm yet to be convinced by what I've seen.

I'd like to offer the forum my apologies for my fellow scouser's interjection into this thread. I can assure you he has been arrested.
  18. That's for me too. All my favourite stuff is on it and running great. Miss Zelda tho, and Metroid.

    Far Cry 6

Well I played the American one and it felt like an RPG to me. I'm sure at one point I even had to collect 5 skunk skins to make a potion. How more RPG can you get.

    Far Cry 6

Such a strange thread for such a high profile release. Did no one play it? Well, I've bought in on sale and was thinking of it being my October RPG. (Just tidy a few things up on my current Skyrim run). I played the one set in America a few months ago and really liked it. And I've read some enthusiastic reviews of this, especially about Esposito's involvement. I dunno. Weird that it's thread here consists of @mmmark's first 30 minutes.

    Dead Space remake

'Unless you die.' I hope they put a decent amount of effort into that loading screen then. I'd appreciate some bunnies under a sparsely clouded blue sky. And perhaps a gamboling fawn in the near distance.
  22. I read they hadn't fixed that, which made me laugh as it was the game's only real flaw. I might do a chronological playthru next year. I can't see myself splurging on this remake tho. Still seems as unnecessary as when Vince Vaughn put on his dead mother's clothes.
  23. I'm not sure I agree. I played the remaster after 2 and, apart from that weird thing where the enemy can't see your clearly visible companions, it felt very good as a stealther.

    Skyrim

I've been playing the anniversary version of this. Loaded up as many story type mods as possible, a nice big house in the country, and the beautify towns mod, which turns most towns into mini Chelsea flower shows. It's great😀 Didn't really expect to play for long, just establish my character build, (one hander with block this time), look at some of the mods, then store it for another day. Seems someone slipped me a vigorous potion of questing though, because I'm 60 hours in and have just joined the stormcloaks and the dark brotherhood. Bugger.
  25. I loved this game. But, cards on table, I go out of my way for games like this. Big, sprawling western RPGs are my thing, and I find that I just allow myself to be immersed even when things, technically, get a bit rough, even Bethesda rough. But here I had no complaints. I played it after the next gen update and thought it was one of the best RPGs I'd ever played, placing it above Witcher 3 in one of my later posts. I took a stealth approach in the main, putting some points into shotguns and automatic weapons for when things went pear shaped. I also remember playing the last third of the game with a silent 'smart' sniper rifle which (like a lot of the smart weapons in this game) was a death dealing joy. The game did so much right for me. I never felt overpowered, so the gameplay was just right, and the game offered those evolving stories in the side quests that reminded me of Fallout 3. I didn't even mind Keanu Reeves turning up to put his oar in now and then. So, yeah, I loved it, found it fully immersive and loved building my character with all the mods and weapons options. Looking forward to doing it all again with the corpo lifepath next year (or 2024, depending on whether Bethesda and Obsidian can get their finger out.
