As I got older I tended to ask for specific games but when I was younger my parents did pick out pretty good games for me. Some of the earliest consoles I got (new) were a PS1 and GBC. I don’t remember if I asked for those but I was very happy to get them! In terms of the games I had the most fun playing at Christmas, San Andreas stands out the most. I don’t think a game has ever matched and surpassed my expectations like that game did. Later on, Christmas 2008 was pretty special too with Fallout 3 and Fable 2 coming out at the same time. Also shout out to 2006 when Kingdom Hearts 2, Guitar Hero 2 and Twilight Princess all came out together.

I’ve played a lot of Snes games via emulation and remasters/remakes/re-releases. It’s hard to look past FFVI, but honourable mentions to Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, FFIV and Dragon Quest IV and V. The other games of this era that I’ve played and really liked were Policenauts and Fantasy World Dizzy. If we’re including PC games of the era then of course Monkey Island 1 & 2, Gabriel Knight and Beneath a Steel Sky.

Very nice haul!

I played a lot of this yesterday and today, about 5 hours into it now. Gameplay wise it’s very simple but it’s a charming game otherwise. There’s something about the music that reminds me so much of PS1-era Final Fantasy, or maybe it’s just the school setting combined with the music that is reminding me of Balamb Garden. It’s going to have to improve to rise above being a 7/10 though.

That’s good to hear, I’ll check it out!

The level of Unreal 2 The Awakening with the giant jumping spiders scared the fuck out of me. Also, the cave in the Gerudo Desert in Twilight Princess that was pitch dark but full of giant spiders hanging from the ceiling.

You mean the offline PC version?

A Space for the Unbound is an adventure game set in Indonesia in the 1980s. It’s about a couple of high school students but there are magical elements to it too, which gives it the atmosphere of something like a Studio Ghibli or Makoto Shinkai film. I’m impressed with it so far. If nothing else, l would love to see a Final Fantasy game made in this style.

Strange Horticulture (PC) The Case of the Golden Idol (PC) Hoa (PC) Citizen Sleeper (PC) The Pedestrian (PC) Pentiment (PC) Cocoon (PC) First completion since mid-March when I started my ill-fated playthrough of Divinity: Original Sin 2.

Finished, after 7 hours, with 15/17 achievements. I just missed two moon ancestors. My last session with the game was pretty enjoyable, the puzzles were fairly intuitive and there were no more bosses. The final cut scene is also pretty cool. In the end I would probably give it 8/10.

Up to 83% completion now. This game has probably drifted to a 7/10 for me. Certainly nowhere near the 89% it has on Metacritic. I would put it in a similar category to Norco and Tunic, worth a look, but over-rated. The critics aren’t really helping it by rating it so highly. It’s still a pretty cool game. I think where my expectations were probably off is in the linearity of the game. I thought it would be non-linear in the style of games like Obra Dinn, The Witness, Thimbleweed Park etc. The linearity of the game brings it much closer to the walking simulator genre.

I’m about two hours in and like you guys said, it doesn’t come across as a classic of the genre, but I am enjoying the simplicity and straightforwardness of it. I guess you could describe it as a puzzle-adventure game. Currently at 46% completion.
