  8. My local CEX had Silent Hill 4 The Room for what seems to be a decent price, so I thought I'd buy it before the Silent Hill 2 remake comes out and makes the price jump back up In the bag next to it is a scart splitter, where it takes 1 output and sends it to two places. I'm thinking, coupled with a multi-scart adapter, then a scart to HDMI adapter, I could possibly use it to play lightgun games on a crt and capture them

  9. Squandered a few bucks on our recent visit to California, took a list of about 40 games with me, found around 8 i was looking for, most of the other stuff i got was because i found it for a decent price, i visited 3 Gamestop's and 3 independent stores but it was slim pickings, stumbled upon a store on one of the last days called "Game Dude" which had an incredible selection although i didn't have much time there as the kids were tired and we had to move on.

  10. Having to spend more time in bed, due to my painfully swollen ankles. So I’ve got myself some reading material. A Mario encyclopaedia, and Bitmap Books’ history of Metal Slug. Bitmap make some bloody awesome books. I already have their SNES compendium, and scrolling beat em up one.

  12. I had a bit extra at the end of the month after taking care of the boring, responsible adult stuff, so treated myself to a game and a couple of audiobooks.

  17. Bloody love Contra, enjoyed the demo. Apparently the Switch version runs quite badly, so I’d avoid that.

  25. Following on about what we've been talking about regarding preservation. Every now and then, when I see stuff cheap, I've been picking up licenced games because they're the ones that definitely won't pop up elsewhere. They might well be shit, but I got Ghost Rider (which I think plays like old God of War), and X-men Legends 2 for cheap

  26. I bought a couple of games last weekend as there was a promotion at Curry's Mario & Rabbids 2 was £20 combined with various selected games. The other games didn't look up to a huge amount, but Spirit of the North had good reviews I was also given a Pikachu cushion from my new job

  27. That Donkey Kong game is really bloody good. I’d certainly recommend it. Gone for Darius Burst: Chronicle Saviors, and Slaps And Beans 2 in the Spring Sale.

  28. This came out to very little fanfare in January and I forgot I pre-ordered it at some point. Was in the right mood to (re)visit it over the weekend, so here goes. First off, the way they bundled this together is rather curious, because you can't simply pick the games on the title screen. Instead it simply throws you into the remake of the DS game and after you beat it it more or less goes straight into its sequel. So if you didn't know any better you'd think these would simply be two chapters of the same game. So far I've only completed the first. The original DS game is a weird one because you could almost call it a tech demo without really offending anyone, but it's also a rather relaxing and charming 'baby's first mystery adventure' kind of game. By remaking this in full 3D without having access to the DS' unique hardware features this would always have been an interesting case study for how to approach remakes and, well, it's not exactly a triumph. Puzzles feel very menial and by-the books, the very first one requires usage of the system's gyro controls and barely works -- after that, they're all solved with classic input methods. Due to the nature of the original it had to spell out a lot of things because it couldn't visually represent them in detail, and unfortunately they didn't adapt the writing to the fact that you can, indeed, now see everything. So you're permanently running into situations where the characters tell you what you see, which adds an unnecessary layer of inactivity to a game that already feels extremely passive. On the plus side, they did make good usage of their apparent low budget by bringing the mansion to life in a rather accomplished fashion. Character models are also very nice and clean, but the camera is placed so close to Ashley I was just waiting for the FBI to knock on the door. On the other hand, the VO is pretty abysmal in terms of audio quality (and, in some cases, the acting itself -- though Ashley herself is thankfully pretty good), camera controls are absolutely awful and the only time it hits its fps target is on the main menu. As a remake I think this is a downgrade in almost every way, but unfortunately I don't have access to the original at the moment to properly compare it to. You could of course make the point that this was mostly made for newcomers, but I wonder if the very simplistic nature of it might turn them off rather than draw them in. That said, I actually did like my second visit to the mansion, to an extent. It's a cool setting and it has a wholesome, if super predictable plot. And if nothing else it's still rather unique, more than two decades later. I think the second game might actually benefit more from the switch to the over-the-shoulder view, because the 2D plane you moved around in always felt oddly restrictive. I've only played the first hour of that one so far, so it's too early to tell, but it already feels like a better fit.

  29. I feel like there's probably countless horror games where half the reason they're effective is because of the sound design. PT for example, hearing that extra footstep, the repeated radio chatter where the volume climbs at the right time, the distortion on the baby, it's really well done. I was going to mention my often used answer of Dear Esther for how it captures the swirling wind of a remote Scottish island, but also has an amazing score that fits the mood, so I will, but I'll also mention the horror game I always bring up. Enemy Zero. The enemies are invisible, you have to work out where they are by Alien style tracker beeps with pitch and frequency rising as they close in, it's fucking terrifying

  31. I was holding off doing this as I didn't want to step on any toes but I think enough time has passed... so here's the February rundown. @Nabby9 scored a massive 27 points for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, 10 points with Ultros (in turn costing @Nag 10 points as a counter-pick) and 7 points for Mario vs. Donkey Kong (Remake) Nag scored 9 points with Pacific Drive, 12 points for Helldivers 2 and 11 points for Granblue Fantasy: Relink. @DisturbedSwan earned 18 points for Persona 3 Reload and 11 points with Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (Remake) Leader board stands like... 1. Nabby9 - 44 points. 2. @HandsomeDead - 37 points. 3. @mfnick - 36 points. 4. DisturbedSwan - 29 points. 5. Nag - 23 points. 6. @Jimboxy - 0 points. 6. @radiofloyd - 0 points. 8. @mmmark - -5 points. 34. I've always disliked the concept of pro systems. For me a console should be a single SKU developers can optimise for, so that no matter what every user will have access to the same experience. When I see the arguments around Rebirth and such, throwing more hardware resources at the problem is the wrong way to look at it. It's just brute-forcing a solution instead of properly fixing the issues at hand. With this generation in particular it's even more ludicrous than the last because we basically went from playing cross-gen games to asking for pro models after seeing the first proper current-gen only titles. I also think it sets a questionable precedent, because this is a never-ending circle. No console will ever be able to do everything during its 6-8 year lifespan, so if we're accepting pro models as a necessity now, we'll basically doing it for every generation going forward as well. If selling the 'same' system multiple times to a household is the key idea here, then slim models with identical hardware features are a better way to do it imo.

  35. Happy for you. Genuinely hurting the experience for me though. Either a stuttery mess which causes a headache and just doesn’t feel good or so blurry it feels like my eyes are unfocused constantly.

  38. I took today, Friday and Monday off to no-life this, game seems pretty good? Better than remake anyway It's Ubisoft as fuck though, you've kinda got to know your own tolerance level for the open world stuff and know when you want to leave it behind to progress the story. At the same time, that stuff has good rewards and fun interactions attached to it, ignore too much and you miss out I'm on chapter 3, even with playing the demo a lot there's still a ton to learn here. Kalm is the most impressed I've been by a Final Fantasy town since like, Alexandria in FFIX or something like that. Real old school style.
