  2. FFVII Remake sequel. Winter 2023 (wow) We also have Final Fantasy VII: Reunion, which is a remaster of Crisis Core Trailer is a little weird. As someone who's spent too much time thinking of ffvii tho Aerith's line here near the end indicates that (ffvii spoilers)

  3. This is like a fps parkour shooter type thing, like super meat boy in 3d, like cloudbuilt, or ghostrunner with more shooting. Also its like a timetrial thing where you have to beat levels asap to get gold/silver/etc medals, which you actually need to progress. You need gold or above on a certain number of levels to progress to the next set, so far anyway this hasnt been too tricky. The levels are between 10 seconds and about a minute long so far, ive done the first 20. theres a jump button, a fire button, a switch card button, and an alternate fire/ability button, all on bumpers/triggers which is good. You pick up card and that decides what fire/alternate do, it sort of works like a context sensitive button, so youll pick up a pistol just before you need to do a double jump (pistol alternate fire is a second jump). Alternate fire also throws the card away. Other cards have alternates like a boost, or a grenade launcher you can use to blast yourself up high. Its a good system as it keeps the button count low so they can all be on the triggers. I found it can confuse me at times though because the same button does loads of different things which sort of fries my brain a bit. Theres some talking/story stuff but it seems unnecessary and can be fast forwarded. its not surprising i like this as i like stuff like ghostrunner and cloudbuilt, and so far its been really good. Unclear if the confusing multi use button stuff will halt my progress later on. anyone giving it a go?

  4. They are running out of 're' names Looking like a mostly visual upgrade here. This game is actually pretty ok in parts but very uneven, hard to see it being fun now without a big rethink of its combat Expect it to be important to the 'Rebirth'

  5. Ok, so this is awesome. i grew up with the Turtles in the ‘90s. Spent a small fortune on the arcade games. Loved Turtles In Time, which was the second SNES game I ever played. Scrolling beat em ups remain my favourite genre. So I was always going to be all over this. Thankfully, it was totally worth the wait. It looks fantastic, you can tell a lot of love has gone into this. The combat is satisfying, with each character having slightly different moves. If you play through Story mode, you gradually unlock more stuff, such as extra health and lives, and abilities. Each level has 3 challenges, ranging from do-able (kill 3 enemies with a specific move), to “not bloody likely” (don’t get hit once). There’s secrets to find, which help to level up a bit faster. The soundtrack is pretty catchy, and I love that the voice cast for the original series is more or less present and correct. I’ve played a few online sessions, and the net code seems pretty stable, even with 6 players, though that can be a bit chaotic. Fairly easy to get into an online game as well, which is good. Trophy wise, most of them are alright, though there’s a few pretty tough ones. Not sure I’ll manage the Platinum. But I’ll definitely have a fair few online sessions. It’s been scoring pretty high with reviews. And it’s totally justifiable, as it’s so much fun to play.

  6. I'm glad Bloodrayne is such a tiny box, in my head I was already contemplating immediately reselling it because I ordered it forever ago and don't really have the space for a big box anymore. Undernauts caught my attention a while ago because the artwork is done by Yasushi Suzuki (of Ikaruga fame) so when I saw that it got a physical release I had to pick it up even though it's not my genre at all (1st person dungeon crawler). Maybe something for Etrian Odyssey fans though.

  12. This is like my version of when people dont like nintendo games because of the cutesy graphics or whatever. It might be amazing but i have a strong aversion to the art design.

  14. It's been weird looking at the dragon fights in Elden Ring thinking 'man, Dogma was just way ahead of this shit now even 10 years ago'. They even mention how in the 'trailer' how other games are designing these big enemies just so you can hack at their legs, which is so Elden Ring. So hopefully DDII goes even further at this kind of design, even if it will inevitably fail to match ER for its world and lore. It's got its issues but its combat and encounter design has some of the great elements of action->reaction. Griffons dont just go on fire, they fall to the ground and writhe in agony for a while, so you can get on top of them SOTC style and hack them while they fly away. Fights are dramatic and cinematic. If an enemy has multiple targets then maiming one of them will change the rest of the fight. The pawn system, although clunky, was a great idea in how they would go into other people's adventures and gain knowledge about fighting different enemies, and then come back to your game to tell you enemy weakpoints and strategies. Their chattering's were repetitive but it's such a cool concept. As well as the whole fact that you actually can't see at night without a light source. Though the easy fast travel in Dark Arisen largely sidesteps this Anyway it's a rough gem, the original game. In a similar ballpark to something like Nier for me where the strong parts lift the whole thing way above the weak parts. The dream here is to just have a game which makes those strong parts even stronger. That was also the dream when Itsuno went from DMC4 to DMC5, but I think that series is hard to give a broad appeal cause its appeal is tied up in having high execution and players being willing to just grind that for ages. But an action RPG is something that anyone can play and have a great experience, so I hope this ends up being that breakthrough finally. Most anticipated game right here. Just the wait will be painful, I wish we could have seen some gameplay but I get why they would be hesitant to show off gameplay cause it will be pretty rough at this point

  15. If you base it purely off reviews and review/preview footage, it was a perfectly serviceable open world RPG game. Honestly, the bugs are extremely overstated imo. The issue was what people didn't know, how poorly it performed on consoles. There's no way they could have been expected to know. Also it wasn't imo the game to end all games that it was billed at. But like, it wasn't a piece of shit either I posted this here because it's off topic in the thread that's supposed to be about xbox avatars and optical illusions.

  21. So I finished this the other night - as some will of gathered from the Platinum video a few posts up - and I will be repeating myself quite a bit here but now I've finished it wanted to put my definitive thoughts all in one place. So as said previously, I absolutely loved the first 50 hours. Going out into this bewildering world, discovering how everything works, actively wanting to explore every nook and cranny, cave and dungeon around Limgrave and the Whispering Plains was great. Although the areas still aren't aesthetically mindboggling the exploration of the open world combined with the Soulsy combat combine for a great experience. I was procrastinating at the end of those areas, going about trying to discover every place I might've missed on this vast map, not wanting to go to the Castle and await the inevitable bosses there as I was having so much fun. Stormveil Castle itself was another great place to explore, a traditional Souls legacy dungeon after all this exploration and open world adventuring. After defeating the boss of Stormveil and entering the new area of Liurnia this is where things started to fall apart. The same gameplay loop I'd been employing and enjoying to great effect in Limgrave the game expected me to repeat for this area until it was fully explored and the boss of the region defeated. The problem is that after 50 hours, doing all this again just isn't that interesting, I was pretty much ready to end the game after Stormveil and would've been happy doing so but instead felt somewhat compelled to explore this new region. So I set about doing so like a good little Tarnished, discovered all the region - which was thankfully much nicer aesthetically than its predecessor - defeated the boss in another cool Hogwartsy Castle and felt like I was ready for the game to end once again. But no, this was just the second region amongst a humungous map made up of about 8 of them, all gigantic and way bigger than they have any need to be. After Limgrave and certainly after Liurnia, I felt like I'd seen all the game really had to show me, I could see its seams, predict everything ahead of me that would be in the next gigantic area and not really be compelled to engage with all the superfluous bloated nonsense the game has in it. The dungeons are a prime example of this, in the first couple of areas I was like 'ooo what's down here' but after you finish those areas you've seen everything they really have to offer and realise they're all pretty much the same procedurally generated shite with (usually) a terrible boss at the end. It's just too big for its own good. After the first few regions the exploration doesn't differ at all, that sense of curiosity goes as you can already predict what's around the next hill, mountain or corner and just kind of roll your eyes at it, the open world aspect of the game completely runs out of ideas. It got so bad that the last three areas I almost completely ignored all the side activities and just largely mainlined it. First unlocking the map with a scroll and then seeing where the big points of interest were and going there, when getting stuck I'd just look up where the next place I should be going was and hightailed it over to that point. I can't tell you the number of times I almost gave up on it altogether, the number of times I'd actively dread playing it on a Friday night after I got home from work. It just became a massive chore overall with that feeling being too briefly abated by the great legacy dungeons (even if there is a few too many Castles) and some fantastic boss battles. After finishing it I can't help think it's like Dark Souls 2 but with a needless gigantic open world, the variety of the environments on offer is astounding but I'd rather go there directly like in DkS2 even if it did break the illusion and world building slightly than have to trudge over another huge, largely boring area devoid of life once again like in this. There's too many bonfires, it's just stupid. There's two bonfires right at the beginning of Stormveil which are literally like 10 feet apart from each other, I understand people didn't like the previous approach and like just being at a boss door so they can easily fight that boss again but this is just ridiculous, it's actually stupid the amount of them in this, like one level designer just placed them at random on some game engine not checking how far apart they were or if they were actually needed altogether. Another huge issue for me is the sense that you can actually let your guard down. In all previous titles you felt like most of the time you had to have your guard up and pay attention all of the time or you'd be punished by some nasty monstrosity lurking behind a corner or ready to leap on you from above but here, when out in the open world you can largely just relax and chill. If you get caught by an enemy 9 times out of 10 you can call Torrent and ride off and if you really get in a pickle you can usually just warp back to the nearest bonfire, although most of the time this isn't needed as it'll be 10 feet away lol. Another bugbear is the horse and horse combat in general. It just dumbs down everything about the game, that amazing Soulsy combat the series and studio are known for is reduced to circling around an enemy and stabbing him, avoiding his attacks until he inevitably snuffs it. It just feels stupid to do, you don't feel empowered doing so, you don't feel clever, you just feel like you're back in 2005 playing Oblivion for the first time or some shit. Playing the way I did as a mage, almost 95% of 'cool' stuff I picked up was completely useless as well which ties into the exploration and adventuring largely feeling fruitless and unsatisfying after awhile. Despite all these issues though, I did have a fun time with it sometimes, it's just those moments were largely too fleeting. As mentioned previously, the legacy dungeons and boss battles often put a big ol' smile on my face, it's only when going back to the tedium of the open world did the game start to lose me again. If it was half as long as the open world was pretty much just Limgrave and Whispering Plains it would be a perfect length, every other Souls game I've finished in 30-50 hours, this took me 110 and I felt every one of those extra hours. So overall, it's just a bit of a bloated mess with a boring open world, propped up by its amazing environments, boss battles and legacy dungeon design. Nowhere near a GOTY contender for me personally, doubt it will even be in my top-10 by the end of the year, but those first 50 hours were a blast at least, I just wish the rest of the game was the same.
