Fighting games in general seem to fit rather well. I'll throw Tekken into the ring because from what I can tell they've all been well-received, with only 4 being a bit of an odd one, but not for quality but rather some fundamental gameplay changes (Death by Degrees thankfully doesn't count because it doesn't have Tekken in its title).
Does it have to be a still-running series? Because I'd really like to say F-Zero. Those games went from strength to strength and even the very first, very basic one on SNES is fun to play today.
Other than that there's Yakuza, even though I've fallen out of it but people still seem to enjoy them.
And one I never played but has been popular for ages now is Total War.
Federation Force was pretty solid, it just came out at a horrible time.
