  1. 1. Final Fantasy XIV. Made me a fan of Final Fantasy again, even if we fell out quite quickly over FFXV being sort of rubbish. But then Shadowbringers was good again to make up for it and show that the magic had not been lost Also it has the best version of diamond dust 2. Breath of the Wild. Just stunning, innovative open world design where exploring itself is the point of it all. Not getting loot like so many MMO-lite open world titles. 3. BloodBorne. The best FROM ever managed with these games with a really good integration of environmental storytelling/lore with its boss battles. Ludwig is still a goat of the generation for great boss design. The weapons are so diverse and leaning into each one's gimmick/'trick' makes exploring multiple builds so much more interesting here than Dark Souls.

  2. Well that’s a turnaround. As some of you know I just could not get into this at all before. But because of all the GoTY lists and wins I thought I better give it another go. I’ve just spent 3 solid ours on it and enjoyed every minute. I’m not saying it’s the best game of all time or even this year (yet) but I’ve done a complete U-turn on my opinion. I will say what helped me this time though was reading a couple “getting started” guides and reading a few posts on just how to play it really. They’ve made all the difference, I now know how to use the ship log thing and can actually play it more like a game where I’ve got “objectives”, not just wandering about aimlessly fighting poor controls- which I’m also getting more used to. Think I came into it with a different mind set too where I was willing to explore and read a bit more whereas before I just wanted to know what the hell to do. Defo recommend people give it another go if they bounced off it like I did. A couple of pointers: Just spend the first 15 minutes or so properly exploring, reading, chatting and doing all the stuff at least once on the opening planet. This will give you a idea how things work and help you partly get used to the controls. Next go to the moon, use the translator on there and speak to the loner. Then go to your ship log and you’ll see blocks and descriptions start filling out with pointers on what to do and where to go next. Follow these, translate, explore and just keep checking the log. That’s basically all I’m doing and it’s giving me a route and objective list to go at which I find has helped me massively in enjoying this game. @Maf Was correct regarding the Giants Deep planet too. It’s incredible.

  3. It doesn't feel like Game of Thrones at all IMO and that's only partly due to the lower production budget. It only has three focal characters instead of thirty and while GoT's background seems entirely build upon politics, The Witcher uses a different kind of lore to establish its world. It's way more deeply rooted in the classic Lord of the Rings fantasy genre and the stories are more about personal growth and finding your own path. Anyway, I watched the last episode a day ago. I think it's a solid first season. The last episode drags along a bit too much but it's a great starting point for season 2. The chronology can seem a bit confusing at first but it's pretty clear after a while how they structured the narrative. No idea why some people complain about that, I can only suspect they were posting stuff on facebook while watching. Forgot to mention, but yeah, Cavill is really good as Geralt. I already forgot it was him in Episode 2 or something, he really fits perfectly.

  4. It’s Sunday so I’ve bust out the old Columbo box set. It’s shaped like a cigar box and it’s hours of heaven.

  5. 1. Super Meat Boy 2. Last of Us 3. Forza Motorsport 4 Console would be 360. Introduced so many things which are standard on consoles now - proper dashboard, integrated online stuff, achievements, Live Arcade/indie stuff on consoles in general etc. It changed everything. Arguably for the worse at times but for the most part I think the good outweighs the bad that’s come from all this.

  6. Ohhhh that's a good one! As far as gaming machine of the past decade... Switch, I guess? It is the only one I've got and a quick google search highlighted how all the gaming machines I played the most were from the decade prior. I think my picks below spotlight the gap in my gaming knowledge of the Biggest offerings on PS4/Xbox/PC, during this period. 1) Binding of Isaac (2011) 2) Hollow Knight (2017) 3) Limbo (2010) Honourable mention: Super Mario Odyssey. Though not as good as Super Mario Galaxy 2, it is still a fantastic game.

  8. Frankenstein (1931) During my Xmas shopping, I spy this amazing bargain. The Frankenstein Legacy collection - seven film series (1931-1945) for £10! This one was definitely for me. So let's start at the beginning. Considering this film is just over an hour long, the story is told surprisingly well. Granted there are some really superfluous characters EG The Baron, the Burgermeister (the former actually does nothing for the story at all) and Victor. I'll come back to that last one in a minute. Meanwhile, 1930's cinematography is a bit ..ropey and some of the scene transitions and jump cuts becomes jarring in certain parts. The problem with this film is I'm more well versed in Hammer Horror. Colin Clive is quite good as Henry Frankenstein (he in fact leaves university early and does not become a Doctor in this adaptation) But he is no Peter Cushing. Boris Karloff however, shines as The Monster. There is a reason he is the iconic portrayal and the basis for most Frankenstein depictions going forward. On the subject of The Monster, it is also an interesting little time capsule of another era. The brain acquired for his creation being one from a criminal. As such this is described as an "abnormal" brain and has physical indicators within the tissue that clearly define it as such. Popular "scientific" thinking of the time. Anyway, The name thing. Dr. Victor Frankenstein is 'Henry Frankenstein'. There is a 'Victor' within the film, Victor Moritz, who is portrayed as Henry's best friend. The name Moritz seems almost a homophone (or at least, a nod) of Morris, a character from Dracula. While at the same time, during one specific scene, Victor is clearly trying to pull Henry's fiance, Elizabeth (at least her name is right). A brief hint at a love triangle that doesn't really service the plot and it is even suggested all three are aware of it. With no ramifications. Ultimately, this was what I'd expect from one of the classics of the Horror genre and as with all good Frankenstein stories, plays up the pathos for The Monster over the human cast. 8/10

  9. @mfnick I've played through the entire first championship, and it is wonderful. Silky smooth and controls likes a dream in handheld mode. Not tried it docked yet but will tomorrow. Highly recommended.
