I've pretty much reached the stage where I need to buy a gaming PC. My laptop is shagged, I can't play the vast majority of the games I'm buying (once I do buy a PC, there are already enough games in my library to keep me going for years, so I'm not too interested in future proofing). From now on I intend to keep gaming and all other uses of the internet separate. So apart from logging into Steam I don't intend to be browsing the internet or writing essays in Word with this thing...I'll buy the cheapest laptop possible for that.

I've had a browse of the games in my Steam library, and of some other top-tier console style games on Steam, and Elite: Dangerous seems to be a good example of what is at the higher end of recommended specs at the moment:

RECOMMENDED:

OS: Windows 7, Windows 8

Processor: Intel Core i7-3770K Quad Core CPU or better / AMD FX 4350 Quad Core CPU or better

Memory: 8 GB RAM

Graphics: Nvidia GTX 770 / AMD Radeon R9 280X

DirectX: Version 11

Network: Broadband Internet connection

Hard Drive: 7 GB available space

Additional Notes: Supports Oculus Rift and TrackIR

Now, I know there are probably lots of DIY freaks on here. But it's more than likely that I'm going to buy a pre-built PC rather than piece one together myself, or pay someone else to do it for me.

That being said, I'm all for advice! To get the ball rolling, I hate to mention the word Dell but this Alienware PC seems to meet (and exceed) those requirements for €1,240:

http://www.dell.com/ie/p/alienware-x51-r3/pd?oc=d00ar324&model_id=alienware-x51-r3

Those of you that have gaming PCs, where did you buy them from, what specs do you have, how much did you pay for them etc?

My Hannspree 37" LCD HDTV arrived today! I haven't had chance to play with the settings much as of yet, but I'm pretty darn impressed with it out of the box. A bargain TV for 400 notes.

Been on the live chat with Dreamhost this afternoon. They are saying the slow down is because they have been doing work on the shared server we are hosted on. Apparently they have stopped now, so we should be back up to speed. I will say, loading this page just took far too long, so I may need to contact them again. If we can keep an eye on it over the weekend, try and update this post if it is slow, or if you get any 404 or 504 errors screen grab them and post them here (again, if possible).

I was thinking of getting a Steam deck OLED at some point but these (the extreme model) are available for basically the same - £500 - at the moment. Heard they’re a lot more powerful and I can have Game Pass on it which is huge compared the the Deck. But having a look about it sounds like Windows on handheld isn’t great? Any experience on here? Also how’s the pad actually feel - the D pad, buttons etc.

Now I’m back playing on the PS5 a lot again my hands are fucking killing!! Like really really hurting. The Xbox pad doesn’t cause me these issues at all so even though it’s eye wateringly expensive I’m starting to this may be worth the price just to stop the pain. I really don’t like the spongey d pad on the DS5 either, wonder if this is any better?

Ive seen the ads and thought might get the app for my iphone, but then i thought how about a Kindle, its £111 from Amazon at the moment for the wi-fi version. I do like a good read and my book collection is slightly overtaking everything so digital books seems the way forward. My iphone and ibooks is an alternative but my OH won't allow me to take my phone aboard on holidays so the Kindle seems the alternative.

Hello all, I've made this its own thread with an alert because it's important in terms of the forum, not so much everything else

For the last several years, however long it's been since Hendo and illdog left, myself, Jim and Ed have been paying for the site. That's hosting, software, whatever else is involved. We've always done it ourselves because we (mainly me I think) felt it would be messy to involve all of you, not really fair if we tell you off, not really fair to not involve you in decisions.

Unfortunately, the cost of the upkeep of the site has reached a point where it's not really sustainable for us to pay for it. It's not insanely expensive or anything, but it is a lot between 3, an awful lot between 2, and a "fuck off, I'm not paying that" amount if it's just one of us

The 3 of us don't use the site as much as we used to, but I think we'd all hate to see it go. It's been around in some form since around 2005, which is kind of shocking. Nearly 20 years. I like that it exists, I like that we've still got a little forum hidden away in a corner of the internet where everyone, broadly, gets on... or at least has reached the point where we're used to each other

So, the point, we've basically got a couple of options. We've already got a Discord that we could expand, start to treat like a forum, but it would be unfindable, and we'd lose everything that's hosted here. Or, we can ask you lot to chip in. Jim is still looking to see if we can bring costs down, and I don't know that we have a number in mind that we'd need from everyone (or whoever can and wants to).

So yeah, this isn't the final post, we'll have more details pretty soon, but there is the chance even with some people chipping in we'll have to close the site

So a while back i bought 10 joysticks from aliexpress to replace various joycons that were plagued with drift, the brother in law has been swapping them out for us, when we can get a hold of him(which is seldom), so i decided to give it a crack myself, managed to swap out sticks on 2 left Joycons without issue, but when it came to a right one that was more fiddly , i managed to rip off the R button from the board which now would require micro soldering(no chance for me), i've ordered a replacement board from Aliexpress.

Any success stories with repairing JoyCons?

Can anyone help!? I’ve been dying to get back into playing Saturn games but I just can’t get them working.

Ive downloaded Retro Arch & 2 cores, followed loads of how to videos on YT to get games working on it but no matter what I do I can’t get it to work. Alt was comes up with no files or some other crap. & there’s that many variances with Roms and such Im just at a complete loss and it’s driving me mad.

So, does anyone have a “pack” they could copy to an external memory stick or HDD and post to me - I’ll pay good money for your trouble including buying a HDD. Or even just links on where I can get stuff which will work please? DM if not allowed on the site.

	Thanks!

I couldn't find a thread or appropriate thread for this so thought I just start one quick.

Not much too say that you don't already know. It runs GC and Wii games, and runs them really well. I got this working a minute a go

Looks stunning. I think it's running at 1440p? So looks great. Unfortunately it's a bit motion pointer dependant. I followed a guide to get the pointer working on the right analogue stick which is like what they've done for actual official Wii ports in the past. However it's extremely sensitive and even in the beginning levels where the game is easy it's not really reliable. Amazingly the emulator has a tonne of options to calibrate the sensitivity

Pretty amazing, right? But it's too much for me.

A real Wiimote and Nunchuck can be paired through Bluetooth. But I don't know where mine are.

Still, despite the drawbacks it's pretty fucking sick that it works so well.

So I think this could be ideal for GC and Wii games that have simple motion controls like where the main input is shaking the controller, because that maps to a button. But anything more complex than that maybe not.

Pretty impressed, though, got to be honest. As a bonus I found you don't even need an emulator or to download anything for GBA games. You can play them over the internet, although the music seems not great that way.

So picked up a sega saturn and hooked it up to tv via scart into ossc upscaler.

Nowwhen first turn it on in passthrough mode the TV forces widescreen which I didnt want but picture was okay but stretched.

When I changed it back to any other modes via the upscaler I get a horrible purple band at bottom right of screen.

Which I assumed was a problem with console.

So put it back into wide screen passthrough. And changed the TV setting to output 4:3 natively. Then when changed upscaller to crisper resolution the band disappears.

If your still following great, ultately I guess the question is does anybody know if saturn is known to have this issue when being forced to run in non native resolution? Or is it more likely to be the console?

After a New Wireless Keyboard and Mouse,

Do a bit of PC gaming here and there and bit of office work, Dont particularly want to spend a fortune, dont need fancy glowing Backlight so forth, Just a decent quality Keyboard and Mouse that ideally wont break the bank, most I've looked at online are either pricey or just look wank.

	Anybody got any personal recommendations?

So after playing about with initial setup on PS5 on new TV's HDR support, seems there is no simple way to have multiple HDR profiles on PS5.

Reason being I have 2 settings on my TV Game mode and Film Mode, both obviously have different screen display Settings so when the HDR in PS5 menu is optimised for games but if want to get the best out of a film needs setting up again. Almost needs 2 settings available 1 for games and one for Films.

Certainly no reason not possible, unless its burried in settings somewhere.

Basically which anti virus/ spyware etc package do people recommend. Ones that don’t interfere too much and kill performance. The free trial on ours is due to run out so wondering which to get.

Is anyone with BT for their broadband?

I'm having major hassle with Orange. In over five years I've never had any trouble, but my livebox router keeps restarting itself now. I've tried everything, new box, new power supply, relocating the livebox, restoring the firmware... multiple calls to Orange and just twenty minutes ago it reset itself. They suggested I try it wired, so as a last resort I am. I've always been wireless though, so don't see how this will help, my 360, iPod and all the other stuff is still wireless. I'm just waiting for it to disconnect with a wired connection now, and then I'll be giving Orange another call.

Any Photoshop experts here? My partner is doing some work on Photoshop and keep having a issue whereby when she’s used it for 30 minutes it slows to a crawl. We’ve found it keeps using about 200gb of temporary files which is basically filling the remainder of the Hard drive causing it to slow down. Whenever we empty the temp files it sorts it. Is there anything we can do to stop it doing this? Just doesn’t seem right surely? I’ve googled it and found lots of threads complaining about the same issue but struggling to find a fix.

Edit - our laptop has only got 8gb ram. - minimum for PS. If we upgraded the ram to 16gb - recommended amount - would that potentially solve it?
