It's a good proof of concept for sure. Obviously wouldn't work like this with Octopath's low viewing angle, but some changes to the perspective and/or level design could make this an attractive title. But at the same time I don't think it would benefit enormously from it now that I've seen quite a bit from the Pixel Remaster, which already, very subtly, modernises some visuals here and there.

Yeah, it was that scene @Metroid66, made me chuckle a bit, as well as the fight right after that. I've made little progress this week but I like how they handle, to avoid spoilers, 'the second half' (I presume it's half-time). What I still haven't quite grasped is the interplay between Magic Points and Trance. I notice you get one or two of these points after a fight but I can't for the life of my find a screen where it shows me how many I have or how they're being used for Trance (which I can't try at the moment for story reasons).

Maybe it did sound like that and I don’t remember. Extremely possible. The Dreamcast was the first console I ever had that broke. The laser reading lens thing. It got to the point where I had to literally stand it vertically on it’s side for it to work properly Even though I never used it very much relative to other consoles I owned, I still think Dreamcast is top 3 coolest consoles of all time along with GameCube and GBA

Even I was caught out by some difficulty spikes in this, in spite of the grind. If I didn't have the game breaking spell (no name for that one either), I think the final dungeon would have been more of a challenge than it was. Which ramps up the difficulty one more time. Similarly the last boss is no pushover, regardless.

Thought I was over leveled on my way to the floating continent. Not so. Major difficulty spike had me floundering against an unexpected I had to juggle my espers a bit for the first time and had an extremely satisfying win with Ceres, Sabin and Cyan. I also think that fight might have been the one @Maryokutaireferenced earlier in the thread about logic defying antagonists. Talk about a fish out of water😀

I remember it making whirring noises but that clicking sounds fucked... mine definitely didn't do that, I played mine in my old box bedroom... I think I would've noticed that kind've noise.

I think the modded version in itself is a bit anti-purist because it boots the games from an SD card, removing the extra noise and also a bit of tinkering when switching imported discs around with the DC-X. And I'm just half-joking about this, I think the whirring up of the disc is part of these systems, too. I think normal, unmodded DCs should be quite a bit cheaper. You could just get one of those and buy your favourite games from ebay or simply burn the ROMs on a CD. You just have to pay attention to which version of the console you get in that case because not all of them are easily compatible with self-burned discs IIRC.

Late to this conversation (and the flirtations of Maf and Regemond), but to throw my hat into the ring: Don't bother. 1. £220 doesn't even get you at least one controller now? 2. The Dreamcast controllers are horrendous (especially the D-Pad) 3. Do yourself a favour and emulate instead.

To me it's like the difference between seeing a film in the cinema or on blu ray versus streaming. It's kinda a question for the purists of the medium, really. The difference is probably not that worth it, unless you really care deeply about seeing these games in their proper resolution, displayed on their proper screen technology and keeping all of their hardware-specific qualities and imperfections. Like I play a lot of PS2 games on an emulator with CRT shaders. But it's not the same, really, and sometimes it takes you out of it when a sound effects is wrong

No, not yet. Not sure what the upside to this as oppose to just emulating. I guess the fun of playing it on “original” hardware. But is that worth £220?

In terms of visual communication of its gameplay, the demo has a handy 'screen shake' toggle which makes the combat look a bit more 'flat', but much easier to parse cause it's not juddering constantly. Plus the dualsense implementation is actually really solid so it makes up for that feedback anyway. Screen shake on a game like this feels fucking awful when you're trying to push its combat beyond a passive to and fro, and play more aggressively. So it's great it has that, FFXVI didn't have that and it was horrible in its late game
