Would you rather fight one T-Rex-sized Bandicoot or a hundred Bandicoot-sized T-Rexes? (spoiler: it's No.1 for the Bandicoot)

Sold Out Sales & Marketing’s ‘Jurassic World has to settle for No2 on it’s debut, as Activision Blizzard’s ‘Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy’ holds off competition to retain the No1 spot in the Top 40 All Formats Chart.

Ubisoft still have 2 titles in the top 10, with ‘The Crew 2’ dropping one place to No3 and ‘Far Cry 5’ jumping 2 places to No8. ‘Star Wars Battlefront II’ also stays in the top 10 due to a continued retailer promotion as it drops down to No9. ‘Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy’ holds off ‘Lego The Incredibles’ for a 4th consecutive week at No.1

‘Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy’ manages to hold on to No1 for a fourth consecutive week in the face of Amazon Prime Day promotions. A non-mover at No2, ‘Lego The Incredibles’ closes the gap with only a 7% decline in its second week.

The Amazon Prime Day effect is most apparent through Xbox One hardware bundling with ‘Sea of Thieves’, ‘Minecraft: Xbox Edition’ and ‘Forza Horizon 3’ all re-entering the Top 40 at No’s 3, 4 and 6 respectively. ‘Sonic Mania Plus’ is this week’s highest new entry at No5. On the back of the launch of new PS4 budget label ‘Playstation Hits’, there is a re-entry for ‘The Last of Us Remastered’ at No26.

June NPD (US) Sales Data

Quote

The games industry brought in $1.08 billion in June, up 25 percent year-over-year, according to the industry-tracking firm The NPD Group. Nintendo’s Mario Tennis Aces made quite a racket when it debuted on June 22, shooting up to become the best-selling title of the month. The popularity of multiplayer games like Epic’s Fortnite continued to contribute to high sales in the accessories category, which was up 38 percent.

“Year-to-date sales of both headsets and gamepads have achieved all-time record highs for a June tracking period,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. “The previous year-to-date high spending for headsets occurred in 2010, and for gamepads in 2016.”

Nintendo won big as the month’s top publisher, even without The NPD Group tracking digital sales from its eShop. When Mario Tennis Aces debuted on June 22, it instantly set a record as Nintendo’s best-selling tennis game in terms of first-month sales and climbed to No. 1 on June’s best-sellers chart.

“Nintendo Switch was the only platform that produced software sales growth in June, with dollar sales more than doubling those of June 2017,” said Piscatella. “Year-to-date software sales on Nintendo Switch are also more than double those of a year ago.”

Santa Monica Studio’s God of War continues its reign at the top of the charts, sitting at No. 2 of June’s best-sellers as well as 2018’s top games overall. Action games have had a good year so far, and sales for titles in that category are up 30 percent year-to-date.

Folks spent $350 million on hardware in June, thanks mainly to the battle royale sensation Fortnite. Sony’s PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console and remains the top platform year-to-date, but Microsoft and Nintendo also saw their sales increase. Year-over-year, Xbox One made almost twice and the Switch sold more than 50 percent. Nintendo also sold the most consoles with its NES Classic.

“This is the first time a Nintendo Entertainment System console has led in monthly unit sales since NPD tracking began in 1995,” said Piscatella.

Crash Makes It 8 In A Row

20/Aug/2018

Activision Blizzard’s new release ‘World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth’ is the only new title to make The Top 40 this week, but has to settle for No3 as ‘Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy’ takes an 8th consecutive week at the No1 spot.

The last time this occurred was during the back end of last year, when yet another Activision Blizzard title ‘Call of Duty: WWII’ claimed the top spot 9 weeks on the trot. Elsewhere in the charts, ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ climbs one place into No2 as ‘Lego The Incredibles’ drops down 3 places to No5 after 5 weeks at No2.

The persistent narrative around Nintendo right now is that its Switch doesn’t have any games, and yet it is having a dominant summer 2018. After coming out on top with Mario Tennis Aces in June, Octopath Traveler took the No. 1 spot in July. That classic-style role-playing game blew up on the console and was able to have an impressive debut.

“Octopath Traveler was the best-selling game of July 2018,” said Piscatella. “Half of July’s top 10 best-sellers are Nintendo platform exclusives.”

“Nintendo is the top-selling full game software publisher for both July and year to date,” said Piscatella. “Nintendo Switch is the only platform showing year-on-year growth in full-game dollar sales with gains of nearly 70 percent when compared to a year ago, despite digital sales on Nintendo platforms not currently being tracked by The NPD Group. Year-to-date sales of full-game software on Nintendo Switch have more than doubled when compared to a year ago.”

Hardware

But it was the Switch that took July.

“Nintendo Switch was July’s best-selling hardware platform in both dollars and units sold,” said Piscatella. “This is the seventh month that Switch has led in hardware dollar sales since launching in March 2017, and the first since December 2017. Unit sales of Nintendo hardware in July 2018 reached its highest point for a July month since 2009.”

Microsoft and Sony are both doing just fine, though. Xbox One hardware sales are trending up. In terms of dollar sales, the Xbox One platform grew by 50 percent year-over-year in July. Year-to-date, it’s up more than 60 percent.

F1 2018 Leads The Pack

28/Aug/2018

Codemasters’ new release ‘F1 2018’ is in pole position as it holds off competition to reach the No1 spot in its debut week.

It doesn’t quite beat the debut of its predecessor ‘F1 2017’, but it does stop ‘Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy’ in its tracks from making a 9th week in a row at No1 as it settles for No3. In at No2 is a blast from the past as Sega release a compilation of a Dreamcast classic in ‘Shenmue I & II’. With ‘Fifa 19’ just one month away, ‘Fifa 18’ jumps 19 places to No10 due to several retailer price promotions.

'F1 2018' holds on to pole position for Codemasters despite strong competition

‘F1 2018’ leads the pack once more amid strong competition from this week’s No2 in The Top 40 All Formats Chart – Konami’s new release ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 2019’, which charts one place higher than its predecessor did in 2017.

We have a further 2 new entries in The Top 10 with Sega’s ‘Yakuza Kiwami 2’ debuting in at No5 and Capcom’s new Switch only title ‘Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate’ coming in at No9. Sony’s new PSVR title ‘Firewall Zero Hour’ doesn’t quite make the Top 10 as it debuts at No11, while Rebellion’s ‘Strange Brigade’ and Bandai Namco’s ‘Divinity Original Sin II: Definitive Edition’ come in at No16 and No23 respectively in their debut weeks.

Spider-Man has Amazing No1

10/Sep/2018

‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’ swings in to No1 to become not only the fastest selling Spider-Man game ever, but also the fastest selling Marvel title (beating previous best Lego Marvel Super Heroes by a big margin).

Published by Sony for PS4, it is the biggest debut on an individual format since the PS4 version of ‘Call of Duty: WWII’. ‘Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age’, also only on PS4, debuts at No2, while ‘Destiny 2: Forsaken’ is a new entry at No8. No other new titles make the All Formats Top 40 this week.

UK Chart, week ending September 15th 2018

The finale in the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy arrived this week to an underwhelming reception in the UK.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider's Week One sales are 25% higher than its predecessor's, 2015's Rise of the Tomb Raider. However, Rise was an exclusive to Xbox platforms (at the time), whereas Shadow is a full multi-platform release.

Compared to the first Tomb Raider reboot in 2013, first weeks sales are more than 70% down. Of course, these charts don't factor in digital sales, and digital is understood to be taking a larger percentage of the boxed market compared with five years ago. Nevertheless, it's not a huge week one for Lara Croft. 63% of launch sales came on PS4, whereas Xbox One accounted for the remaining 37%.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider debuts at No.2, which means Spider-Man retains its No.1 spot for a second week. Impressively, the Sony game's week two sales are down just 42% compared to its launch week, and it's already on the brink of eclipsing the sales of the last big PS4 exclusive: God of War (boxed sales only).

There's also a new game at No.3 in the form of NBA 2K19. The 2K title charts a place lower than last year's entry, although sales are pretty much identical. 65% of sales of NBA were on PS4, 33% on Xbox One and 2% on Nintendo Switch.

Last week's big new releases drop further down the charts. Sales of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age fell 86% week-on-week and the game drops to no.29, whereas Destiny 2 Forsaken sales fell 68% and the game now sits at No.26.

Crash and GTA still getting in the top 10 is ridiculous.

I know it's not a great thing to hope for but I am kind of hoping Tomb Raider drops cheap on pc quick. Despite it not doing amazing I suspect it's done well enough that it's not going to plummet in price before I move house

Spider-Man sells record 3.3 million copies in first 3 days on sale.

Quote

The popular comic-book superhero's recent resurgence has expanded beyond cinemas and into the world of video games, with the wallcrawler's latest self-titled game selling a record 3.3 million copies in the first three days of its release earlier this month.

One million copies were pre-ordered, another record for Sony.

That figure also does not factor in sales of the company's limited edition PlayStation 4 Pro bundle that combines a special Spider-Man version of the console with a copy of the game for $399.99.

"It's met and exceeded all expectations. I think the company, and the campus, and our fans are super proud of it."
